[snip]Looking at the shipping manifest for the container, it seems someone had made a mistake at Earth a big one in fact! This dog had been put to sleep for a trip to Mars where it was expected to undergo final training as a MACO Search/Rescue/Contraband service animal. Instead of going there she got shipped here, it would seem someone for MACO Command on Mars would be winding up with a shipping crate meant for the Sojourner that would have contained two months worth of toilet paper.
“Captain!” Sasha called out, knowing the distance was not that far, “we have found the .. Sergeant’s crate. She was bound for Mars for use for Search and Rescue and Contraband search.”
Marceau nodded, and then asked, “Is there anything else with her?” He thought about it a moment and then said, “I will contact the Martian base and tell them their shipment has been found… I would be surprised if they haven’t noticed she hasn’t arrived.”
If anyone deemed to look at the turned off PADDs this would be confirmed. The Nessa had completed training as a service dog for the MACOs as a therapy dog for morale purposes when not on duty. She had also finished much of her current search/rescue training but had not started or completed the Contraband and such training.

Rifling about Rick found the PaDD’s. Curiosity took over and he turned one on. Their grav plating checks were going to have to wait. This was just a make work project anyway to get them more familiar with the new ship. This was more fun, well, unless Green suddenly rolled around the corner to join the late night party of beta shift and insomniacs. “Wonder if she could sniff plasma leaks.”
- Rick and Sasha“Until we’ve contacted Mars, and figured out what to do with her, we’ll have to take care of her,” Marceau commented. He had no issue with that, though he hoped it wouldn’t be too big of a draw on their supplies. Hearing Green’s comment, “If she’s search and rescue… I’m sure she could sniff a lot of things if she were trained for it.”

It might occur to someone to have medical do a rough scan and check up of the dog just to make sure there were no lingering effects of the long sleep and such.....

Rick riffled about in the container. “Some food, medical bits. Pretty well contained here. Oh, clever girl,” he commented.
“What?” Sasha asked.
“Here, sir,” he said to Sasha. “Look at this. The latch here inside. Designed so the Sergeant here could get out herself.”
Sasha’s lanky frame bent over it and inspected it. “Very good. If you see this you’d find it needed a precise touch. Not just any to open it. It had to be precise. Probably designed in Russia.”
“Uhhh, right, sir,” Rick replied.
“Captain, there is food and medical in the crate. If I might suggest,” Sasha said, “We take it to sickbay where they will know what to do with it.”
“And maybe get the Sergeant here looked at? No telling how long she had been asleep or if she is in need of food or attention,” Rick added.
Sasha and RickMarceau nodded. “Take all of it to Sickbay.” He smiled a little, “We have no vets aboard, but I’m sure Doctor Grey will do her best for the little Sergeant.” Human doctors weren’t vets, but some of the knowledge did transfer. “And the medical supplies, also. The food and other supplies, find somewhere to put where we’ll be able to find it.”

“Yes, keaptain,” Sasha said. He looked relieved to be able to do something and between the two of them collected the materials.
“Best not give the chef the food. Might end up in our omelettes in the mornings,” Rick said as they were about to leave. Idly he had recalled somewhere in the scuttlebutt the Captain had taken medicine training. So if anyone would know that a doctor could double up in vet work then he would.
Sasha said, “Do you really think chef vould do that?”
“They like to be creative,” Rick said. “On the Bonnie the cook there was a bit .. too creative. He’d have fried Nessa’s food up in a pan and mixed it with beans and called it ‘chef’s stew’” He looked down at Nessa and figured he’d try out a command that any dog should know. “Nessa, come. Walkies.” Inside he was praying that that would work and that the sergeant would actually follow.
- Sasha and RickMarceau glanced at the two of them. “Did the chef transfer with the rest of the crew?” He asked, almost as though a little nervous. “I am… not the most adventurous in the culinary world.” Then he smiled at the dog. He had been a medical officer and CMO, and then CMO/XO his entire career before making the rank of Captain. Veterinary med and human med weren’t the most compatible, but it was doable if one was willing to try, he was sure.

“I am .. new to space keaptain,” Sasha said. Somehow he was able to mix newbie nervousness with a certain pride accompanied by a slight uptick shrug of his shoulder toward Rick.
Rick, however, had to think, and found himself surprised. The Captain was French by his accent and some reputation. Weren’t they all, at the least, food snobs to some degree? His reply was uncertain. “I .. am not sure, sir. I don’t think Rocco transferred over. I’ve not seen pasta yet on the menu and that was his mainstay.” Rocco had a habit of some kind of Italian dish twice a week and he’d not seen that yet. Rick was on gamma shift. All he saw for food off that was what was left over. In the mornings he preferred to just go to his bunk and sleep instead of getting breakfast.
Thinking that he had best distance himself here, he took a step and hoped Nessa was following ..
