It was some weeks later, and finally the Sojourner dropped from warp on the edge of the unclaimed Wolf 359 system. Scans coming in painted the system much as had been laid out before, no sign of ships recently or otherwise was in evidence. The question the crew now had was where should they start their first mission into the system?

From the pilot’s seat directly in front of the captain’s chair, Helena spoke up from her seat, over her shoulder. “Captain, we’ve arrived at Wolf 359, and dropping out of warp…now.” Her hands slid across the controls bringing the Sojo to a smooth drop and angled to enter the system. “First destination, Captain?”

Meanwhile, down in Engineering ..

The door to engineering was open. El was just returning from, potentially, one of the last ventures of her service sup work – that of the waste reclamation units. The reconstitution tank had been processing slower than spec and so was getting backed up to the point of flagging the system. It was a measure of system and manual adjustments; the system was not automatically adjusting to ‘volume’ but was on a static system spec. Ultimately it was searching out a dip switch on the board within the unit that had disabled the auto adjustments in the computers. For El the job was an interesting mystery to solve. In this case she was suited to it to work in the cramped space.

Her first indication that something was up was her hearing the murmurs of many voices ahead in engineering. Tucking a rag back in her pocket she crossed the threshold to engineering proper. Engineers were clustered around a display, seven of them at a count. Rosa was almost elbowing her way through the thicket of engineers. Emerson looked to be in the driver’s seat at the console, Tyler over his shoulder and Aeled peering around from the side. “Look at that,” Darlene said, her hand on Williams’ shoulder to push him down. She was tall enough to peer over his shoulder, provided he hunched. Lt Green would have them all kicked back to their posts, El thought to herself. The Chief must be on the bridge as pretty much all of Alpha shift was accounted for here. She was the last.

“What’s up?” she asked WO Tyler Jackson. He was at the back of the crowd and evident by his slim build and the ever present ‘Sojourner’ ball cap. It must be pretty big for him to be part of the crowd. He was almost the ‘Green’ of Alpha shift, all business.

Tyler turned. It wasn’t often at all that El was in the engine room and outside of her machine shop and gave her a look that suggested ‘where have you been?’. She still had not been cleared for that area. There was a slight greying at the temples on him, El noticed. She wondered if the ball cap was to cover that up, but she thought it looked distinguished on him. “We’re at the system, Ensign. Wolf 359. Just seeing the first sensor feeds to have a look at the star and the planets.” He had never said her name, only her rank. Over the past month El had noted some bonding happening among the team. This she watched from a distance. Then she felt twinges of yearning to be a part of them but resisted.

Ah. She felt her pulse quickening. El had been in space but not to a new world or star. Her eyes flickered from one to another of the engineers. For Jackson this was old hat; he had seen his share but, she guessed, nothing ‘new’ like this. For many – some new and some from the Bonnie – this was a new thing too. She thought she saw a hint of interest but he covered it; Jackson, El thought, would make a good drill sergeant. El tentatively moved forward trying to catch a look at the screen. She could play it back later but the ‘now’ was ‘new’; it would not be new later. Sliding in beside Aeled, who was short, El just caught a sidelong look at the screen. Still, El remained on the fringe of the group, but even there, sharing this moment she felt a part of them, not alone. There was the star! El knew it was a Red Dwarf star from doing research on their destination and had seen the probe details and images. This was not really new, but the newness was that they were there! What that must look like on the big screen on the bridge, or so she imagined. El knew what the bridge looked like spec wise; she had never been there. The other voices droned into background as she embraced the wonder of this new thing.

Marceau thought for a moment. “Let’s start with the second planet, the class M.” It was safer, he figured, considering it at least had a breathable atmosphere. He thought back to the briefing, he recalled Grace saying they’d need to go to the planet surface. “We’ll start with scans from orbit, once we have those we can send a team down to the surface, for samples from the mining sites.” Transporters were not yet rated for anything besides supplies, certainly not crew. Marceau nodded to Helena, “Our pilot can fly the team down on a shuttle.” He looked to Grace, “We will have to decide who to send to the surface.”

~ Captain Renault

“Aye, Captain.” There was more than a hint of a smile to her voice. Field Trip! Helena turned the ship in a smooth arc and headed for the second planet in the system. She glanced over at the science station. “Cmdr Grace, do you have a preference for orbital position to begin your scans?”

Lt Laursen, pilot

Isaac started to scan for anything and everything. He didn’t what to be caught off guard. in a few seconds the scans will come back and he will now what’s out there in the dark of space.
