“Only a Lt. Commander, doctor,” Kenny said with a bashful smile, looking around as the other officers slowly converged towards them, noticing the three grouped together.

“Ensign burns, if you could help Rachel out looking for some source of fresh water, I’ll gather a few of these others to look for supplies to use to build a shelter”

Kenny

Rachel turned around “We should check the beach water, it’s most probably saltwater but we cannea ignore it” she turned to Burns “Come on Laddie, let’s find ourselves some sustenance” She said as she moved away from the beach and stopped to listen for any flowing liquid.

Rachel

“Yes, Ma’am,” Burns said, as Kenneth stepped away, going over to the other officers present.

“Come on, let’s get looking for shelter. You two ladies, I want you to start looking for any signs of intelligent life. Walk a hundred paces in one direction along the beach, look for anything that might be a sign of life,” he instructed. “You two, go the other direction,” he suggested.

There didn’t seem to be any flowing water very nearby, except for the lake or ocean that they were up against.

Kenny

Whilst Rachel listened and looked for another water source her partner moved to the ocean near them, sticking a single finger in and bringing it up and having a taste, seeing if the water was salty or drinkable.

Rachel

The water was quite salty, unfortunately. Kenny began to walk along the shoreline with one of the other officers, counting his paces as he walked. “We’ll tell you if we find anything that looks like a stream,” he called over to Rachel.

Kenneth

Rachel simply gave the Engineer a two-fingered lazy salute as she walked the other way with her new posse further inland. It was at times like this she wished she’d carried some tech with her off duty.

Rachel

Kenny continued to search. After a while, Rachel’s team happened upon some wildlife - small creatures sitting on tree branches that looked almost like rabbits from a distance, but they had strange bulges on their backs. There was also the sound of flapping wings coming from around, like there were a few large birds flapping through the trees.

Kenny

Rachel examined the creature closely and made a mental note, wildlife meant sources of nutrition although she couldn’t even try to speculate about what they eat or even if they did so at all. She motioned her group to stop and not startle the creatures as she alone made a careful approach.

Rachel

One of the ‘rabbits’ seemed to notice her, although it didn’t startle right away. This was a strange creature it hadn’t learned to be scared of. The bulges extended outwards and flared, revealing themselves to be wings. The avian lagomorph flapped its wings, chirping.

Kenny

“Well aren’t ye a beauty” Rachel said as she examined it thoroughly, making a mental note of it’s behavior. “You wouldn’t happen to have any water nearby?” She asked as she raised herself, indicating the others to follow deeper inland.

Rachel

The winged “rabbit” chirped again, and flapped its wings to carry it up to the next highest branch. Just under the sound of the strange fauna, Rachel would be just barely able to hear what sounded like running water.

Kenny

Rachel indicated her group to stop and stay quiet as she focused on where the water sound was coming from and led the group there.

Rachel.

They found a flowing stream coming from a clear spring, and upon testing the water would find it to be safe for human consumption. There was a sound in the bushes, and one of the NE’s pointed across the stream. “Look, did you see that large shape in the trees?” he exclaimed.

Meanwhile, Kenny and co hadn’t found anything of note.

Kenny

“No, I didn’t laddie” Rachel Looked to where he pointed and took a step forward “do ye understand me?” She called out to the shadow.

Rachel Grey

There was no shape to be seen, but the rustling sound was heard again, a bit further away. Whatever it was, it had the common sense to get away from strange things like the starfleet officers.

Kenny

Rachel raised herself to her full height and moved to the water “You two head back to the main rally point back at the beach. Inform Commander Fleet that we’ve found a fresh source of seemingly harmless water.” She told two of her party.

Rachel

The two officers rushed off. NE Perkins, who had been the one to point out the movement in the forest, looked to the Doctor. “Should we investigate, Doctor Grey?” he asked. Perkins was from the SS Bonaventure like Rachel and Kenny, although he seemed to be the only one. It seemed that there weren’t more than two or three officers from each of the five or six ships that had officers here in this strange landscape.

Kenny

Rachel knelt again, put her hand in the ground and picked up a handful of dirt before standing up again “Yes indeed, let’s see what we’ve got” She smiled her crooked smile at Perkins before moving to wherever the sound came from.

Rachel

“From what I saw in the brief glance I got of the creature, it was pretty small,” he mentioned, staying near Rachel. “It moved off pretty quickly,” he added quietly.

There was a slight rustle in the leaves above them.

Kenny

Bump

“Well fast it may be” Rachel said as she looked up “It’s still not quiet as a mouse. Come one little fella, come down, we aint gonna hurt ye” She called up, her sand filled fist clenching slightly.
