[snip]Elm, the alien human like woman they had rescued from the planet, during this exchange shrunk down her shoulders from any attention as the CO came over. She clearly was still quite shy and unsure of how to proceed with things since coming into the room earlier. Nor how she might contribute being only a civilian.
El has vaguely been aware that others had come but had been more paying attention to Elm, and was surprised when it had turned out to be the Captain. She glanced over and was more surprised to find the soldier there looking much better. Her eyes hung on him for some seconds while overhearing what was being said to the XO. She was getting nervous with all the higher ups there talking about things other than stopping this war. To her the priorities were off, and she had expressed them, and had been, to her, patronizingly dismissed. But she had said them and guessed that she should look into other things. They could look after Elm better than she could and maybe ask better questions. She realized she was feeling edgy and tired and needed some rest. The attention was on the XO and Elm, not her, so it was time to make her exit before she said something that would get her into more trouble.
“I’ll check with engineering then get some rest,” she said quietly. To Elm she said, “They will look after you if you need anything.” As she wasn’t part of the conversation she moved to put her mug in the cycler for cleaning. It sounded like the cook was up too so it must be later than she thought.
- El, EngElm gave a little nod to El, “..T....thank you for your time and food.” She said simply.
Just before leaving, El reached out to give Elm’s arm a gentle squeeze. “I wish I could do more,” she said. They helped Elm, but to El it was good but not enough.
Ari saw the exchange and smiles. Her crew was always an amazement to her. So many times she heard of crews with hearts of ice when it came to new races and experiences. Heading into them with the cold calculations of robots. But not her crew. As Elm rose, Ari nodded with a smile. “Please have engineering let me know their progress. And sleep well. I’ll need your help again, soon. She smiled and let the woman depart.
El gave a light nod; the adrenaline of the day was slow to wear off but it was and she was starting to feel it. She considered herself to be strong though wondered how the others were doing it. Maybe it was some trick that came from rank. Maybe it was stims. “I’ll do that, ma’am,” she said. She felt a degree of pessimism that anything could be done on this side of the planet. However, who knew? Maybe she would just curl up on the Cochrane for a nap there rather than her cramped quarters.
Rachel followed the Captain with her gaze for a moment but quickly returned her attention to the Soldier. She calmly continued eating her salad and smiling.

Meanwhile the soldier seemed to notice his fellow alien human woman, he turned to regard her a moment, and her somewhat still dirty appearance, before turning his attention to Grey. “..You rescued others from the war below?” He inquired. Not in a patronizing way, but more a curious way as if confused on why ‘Great Saviors’ like them had done so. “How many others have you uplifted like those of that the Great Greyhound Saviors did in times past?” He added, as if thinking along the lines that the Bonaventure was here to bring some divine message or guidance to the war torn planet now and was looking for ‘divine agents’ or something.

Rachel blinked at that question, her ever-present Cheshire grin faded for a moment “The Great Greyhound Saviors?” She asked, sidestepping the question “I’m not familiar with them, what can you tell me about them?”
El had to pass not too far from the soldier. He was looking at Elm. Glancing toward her and back at the soldier she frowned feeling a small wash of jealousy. But that moment passed and he was turning to the doctor. As she passed by she overheard what he said and inwardly bristled that they should be doing something more. Uplifted. That was an interesting, if applicable, term. Sounded more lofty than ‘beamed’. For a moment she mused about going to the ‘Uplifter Room’ … thought the ‘down’ might need another term.
- El, EngAri sighed. This trip was taking its toll on everyone. She has hoped El could have given some input but understood the woman’s fatigue and frustration. Sometimes she wished she could just crawl into her own bed and just pass out. Be she certainly wasn’t gonna begrudge the crew some rack time.
OOC: Technically I, er El, gave the XO a concise brief on what she had found out so there’s nothing that El knows that the XO hasn’t been apprised of from what she pieced together, so y’all can see how good his memory is :) .. Gene
Turning back to the woman at the table with the XO, she nodded with a smile. “You’re definitely welcome to whatever you can eat.” Glancing back towards the XO, she waited for what he had to impart on how things were going. She was gonna be checking in with the others soon enough, but had hoped he’d heard from his team. Otherwise she’s reach out to them, herself.

Jonathan looked between the Captain and Elm, and could tell that Elm was definitely not used to all of the attention, even if it wasn’t all focused on her.
“It has been a little bit since their last update Captain. They were in the base trying to figure out what its purpose was for, but there were other lifesigns in the area. We only had limited time for an update because there was concern of them being discovered due to the open channel. So chances of it being the same base, I’d say are rather high.”
The NE at the communications received Locke’s message then patched it through to the correct channels.
=^= Locke here. We located the energy source and were in the process of shutting it down, but we discovered something. Some of it is being used to power some cryo capsules. Only 3 are active. Advice?=^=

Jonathan let out a little sigh of relief when he heard the update from Locke. He looked over at Ari, “That does complicate things. I don’t think we can shut down the energy source and cut off power to those capsules. But do we really want to wake them up?”

El departed and turned toward Engineering. The ship suddenly felt small. When she first arrived here it had seemed big. The jewel as it were of the fleet, at least to her, for mankind-made technology. And now it seemed like it had shrunk as well. Such a small thing with such a large task around them. How big could a ship be when one could go out of a mess hall and be in engineering inside of two minutes? Her boots rang hollow on the deck plates; at this time of the shift there weren’t many around. Taking a Jeffries tube she nimbly slid down the railing to C-Deck, muscle memory taking over in the short slide.

Ari settled into the seat beside Jonathan. “Now I’m torn. We need to get us, and the planet, back where we belong. But can we afford those losses since they aren’t mine to count? Or do we risk asking our friend,” she half nodded over her shoulder to the soldier, “to help us try and identify them. I mean, we shouldn’t just sacrifice them cause they are in the wrong place.”
She thought for a moment. “I think we need to discuss this with the Doc.” She got up and nodded for the XO to join her. Smiling to the other guest, she nodded as well. “Come and join us. You can keep eating there as well.” She wanted to be sure they all got some healthy food in their stomachs before going back to the surface. It was hard enough, she imagined, being in this predicament, without being hungry as well.
