They engaged in a brutal, swift war that left things in ruins. That would be for them to fix. “In my language,” she said quietly, “the word crisis also means opportunity. Something on your world is behind this that is keeping us here, that made your world .. disappear and reappear. That may have started this war. But we’re looking. We’re trying.” How does she say that they were as ‘stuck’ as Elm was with regards to fixing anything right now.

El peered out the window again. There must be some key to this that they did not know, that they were not seeing. Here and there El could see flashes. Were they explosions? Fires reflecting off clouds? Could they stop the war? Of course they could. The ship had the high ground. The orbital platforms were all but spent. They could force a cease fire. Would the Captain do that? Was she strong enough to do that? “The Captain could,” El said quietly.

“We are still learning. When you first spoke of the Greyhound and Serpents it sounded like it was long ago, but then you said it was recent. A week or so ago. Please tell me more of them. What are these Serpents?”
