She picked one up, popped it inside a bun with Elm in view to show her. “Please don’t judge us on our midnight food selection,” she said with a smile. “So what did you do on your world? School? Did you work? Have a boyfriend?”

”..I was a lawyer out of Bos’ton, my husband got called back for military service a few weeks ago when things began to grow more and more tense between us and the MACARM forces to the south..” Elm answered. Taking a moment to study the hot dog and then offerings of toppings, she selected pickled relish and mayo after a few tries.

“Might want to avoid the onions there. Nasty for the breath,” El commented as she fixed hers. They had stopped here and there on the mission but not enough to have more than a snack and water. “A lawyer. Impressive.” El was impressed and glanced at her in a new light; to El she looked young and frail and not one who would have been up defending the legalities of the system. “What is Bos’ton like? Nice place to live?” She admitted. “I never really lived in a city. Visited them. Before coming onto the ship here I trained in an Academy that was in a city but didn’t see it much. I grew up on an island.”

Elm seemed to consider the words on how Bos’ton was. “..It was....ok I guess? It was once one of the larger naval ports for SEM forces up north here but that just made it a bigger target for bombing and invasion when the War started.” She said. “..But during peace time it was nice meeting the sailors and waving off those going back out to sea.” She added then munched on her hot dog a bit quietly. Gazing then out one of the port windows she blinked then rose from her seat moving to the window, her food forgotten. A hand was placed on the window as a view of some of the northern areas came into view alight with fires even from this distance. Tears and a body sob came from her.

Sailors. Navy. El had exposure to the sea and waves and navy vessels - though on Earth at that time the surface vessels had changed considerably with technology and the creation of energy weapons and the like. The ‘old’ days of stately ships had been eclipsed on earth to orbital vessels and the likes. Elm’s world must have been one in transition to have both, likely in some kind of precarious balance. She watched as the girl got up. No, that wasn’t so right. She was not the young girl that El had supposed she had been. She must be older than El herself with her having so studied. She had lost her mother, perhaps her husband, her city, and was still in one piece; she was stronger than she looked, El thought.

She set her food down and went over to see what Elm was seeing. The world looked lovely, and would be more, was it nor scarred by the fires. Was that what Earth looked like after its wars? Did anyone see that from the space stations when it happened? About to say something she stopped herself. What could one say to that? Instead she gently put her hand on Elm’s shoulder and stood with her.
