“I’m a good officer, I don’t complain about the shifts I get - at least not to my superiors,” Fleet said with a cheeky grin. While Isaac may be a department head and himself not, the Armory Chief didn’t have a higher rank than Kenny. The engineer’s question caused Kenny to stare at the Helm station for a few moments, looking for anomalies. “Nah, looks fine. You sure you should be doing this while we’re in Warp? Couldn’t that be a problem?”

“Haven’t had a critical incident since the Walker sub-program was devised. It creates a firewall not letting the board initiate any changes until it has done a sub-routine to confirm successful installation with no errors.” The way he said it made it sound like he had said that a lot.

Isaac looked at the engineer “Yes the helm Officer is right. May I see your work orders really quick” he asked “ if your work orders check out then I will give the order for fleet here to drop out of warp”

Galen fished around in the case, pushing aside other cables and tools to then pull out a small hand held display. “Have a look.” The display held a list of jobs for that month, this being one of them.

Isaac took the pad and looked it over. He then started to verify it with his pad “Ok mr. Fleet take us out of warp” he said giving the pad back “ make it fast” he said to the engineer.

Kenny typed a few commands into the Helm Console and flicked a switch or two, and the ship came smoothly out of warp somewhere in the vast nothing between star systems. There was nothing but wide empty space around them for light-years.

“It’s nice to see the stars instead of the inside of a warp bubble, even if it’s only for a few minutes,” he commented.

Galen returned the ‘to do list’ back into the case with a light toss. There was something about new and shiny that he just needed to have a sense of ‘use’ put to it. Kneeling more he watched the readout. The cabling was more status levels while the file transfer was fully wireless. He whistled low to that new song ‘Star Dancer’ that was making its rounds. They said that the tune was based on an older song of another name and theme but he didn’t care. It was catchy and the group ‘Nova’ had had a history of songs based on medieval drinking tunes, so this was mild for them. The status indicator moved along consistently. Another indicator flashed up a note to say that the XJ-A boards were nearing operational life and needed to be replaced within the next three months. He sighed in the whistle; fleet was so conservative with these things. Barely would a board get broken in before they wanted it replaced and the old board run through a battery of tests. They had not been in space ‘that’ long and they weren’t taking chances. A bleep notified him that it was done. “Looks good here,” he said, detaching the cables. “Have a few more to do here but nothing that will affect flight.” Though technically this wouldn’t either.

“Thanks. It was nice to see the stars for a minute,” Fleet winked at the crewman, then looked to Black for the signal to resume course for their destination.

Fleet, Helm

Isaac looked over to fleet “ OK resume course” he said with a small smile.

Galen moved to the side and rear of the bridge and proceeded to do the same with a science station, only this time sitting on the deck cross legged. Absently he pulled out a small package of peanuts from the case which he slowly chewed as he plugged in and got the next panel going on updates.

Kenny leaned back in his chair, looking out at the stars with a wistful sigh before leaning forward and moving a slide, pushing them back into warp on the same heading as before. “There we go, back into space,” he spoke.

Fleet, Help

Isaac started to cough and he start to feel itchy. He moved the chair around to look at the engineer “Excuse me how do you get those peanuts I am highly allergic to nuts” he started to feel his throat closing on him “fleet……call sickbay….” That was all he was Abel to say as he passed out.
