Finding a few minutes in between her double shift, T’Leia decided to make her way down to the Mess Hall. She only had a few minutes for a meal and wanted something fresh rather then from the synthesizer in her quarters. While the synthesizer could make a few basic items it wasn’t as comprehensive as the Mess Hall. And the Mess Hall offered fresh foods.
Entering the Mess she made her way swiftly and efficiently over to the counter which seperated the Mess from the galley. She ordered a Vranto salad with kreyla bread on the side and a cup of Vulcan spice tea.
Turning she surveyed the available tables and noted the Healer sitting at one. His own meal appeared to be finished, as indicated by the tray of empty dishes in front of him and he was sitting and sipping a cup of tea.
“Tonk’peh, Hakausu. Lau I hau du?” T’Leia asked as she approached his table. (Greetings, Healer. May I join you?)Commander T’Leia
Stovik glanced up from his introspection and noted the Commander standing with her tray in her hand. “T’ rivak, sanoi hayal-tor. Uf nam-tor du, Commander?” The Healer said affably as he indicated the opposite chair with one hand. (Of course, please sit. How are you, Commander?)
Healer Stovik
Setting her tray down on the table, T’Leia took her own seat and taking a bit of her salad she studied the Healer sitting opposite her as she chewed. “I telv-tor ish-veh report svi’ fudau tor wuh missing hydrochloric sash. Tor du dva-tor wuh wuh-lan’s var? ” She asked in between bites. (I read your report in regards to the missing hydrochloric acid. Do you believe the Ensign’s story?)
Commander T’Leia
Stovik nodded.”Rik’ intruding fi’ wuh wuh-lan’s awek’es, I kupi kash-ral ish-veh sincere confusion heh dismay svi’ fudau tor wuh meli-tukh. Au truly had rai vokaya il fai-tukh t’ leralmin-tor meli-tukh.” (Without intruding on the Ensign’s privacy, I could sense his sincere confusion and dismay in regards to the chemicals. He truly had no memory or knowledge of said chemicals.)
Healer Stovik
Alan entered the mess and was passing by T’Leia and Stovik’s table when he suddenly decided he must stop. “That’s wrong. It’s wrong you know. Meli-tukh. The end consonant should be harsher. It’s meli-tukh.” All of this he said without meeting either of their gaze. “I trasha du tor ish-veh yem. Ik tor yeht Vuhlkansu.” (I leave you to your meal. That was correct Vulcan.)
-Alan Dysart
The Healer’s expression did not change during the linguists speaking. T’Leia’s eyebrow rose as he continued.
“Lieutenant Dysart, I presume? Please, join us.” She said when he had finished.Commander T’Leia
Panic consumed Alan’s thoughts. It was people. He didn’t want to sit with people. But she outranked him. And was the XO. He sat, his hands shaking. He looked at the table, still never making eye contact, not even certain what Stovik looked like for all his avoidances. He sat in utter, awkward silence for a moment. “Yes. Lieutenant junior grade Alan Stephen Dysart.”
-Alan Dysart
“I am aware your official rank is Lieutenant junior grade, Lieutenant. It is customary in Earth Fleet to address you as Lieutenant in normal conversation as the full designation is only used in introductions or you introducing yourself. Admittedly, it is not logical. But it is an Earth designation. ” She noted the younger officers extreme discomfit in the situation. How could someone who was a linguist and relied on communication be so....awkward?
“It is quite alright, Lieutenant.”The Healer said as he finally spoked though he did not move his position not wanting to scare the linguist off. “I believe the Commander wished to meet you as we have not had the chance to do so yet. If I might indulge my curiousity, Lieutenant how did you come to join the Fleet?” He asked hoping that as with most humans the chance to speak of himself might relax the younger human.
Commander T’Leia
Healer Stovik“I speak nine languages. My parents said I should use that in my work. I want to learn new languages. Earth languages are boring. They all come from the same few origins. I wanted to go into space. This made sense.”
-Alan Dysart
“Indeed, highly logical.” Stovik said.” Out here you will have that opportunity and be constantly challenged in meeting new races and learning new langauges. Are you enjoying being on a starship?” T’Leia sat back and let Stovik take the conversation ball. He had a much easier time having casual conversations with the crew. He had always had that gift.
She found it more difficult, serving on a Vulcan ship for so many years had made this a difficult transition for her. Vulcans did not engage in small talk, as there usually wasn’t a need for such. When they spoke to each other it was to convey information pertinent to the events at hand. She was constantly perplexed by the human need to discuss trivial topics such as the weather on a particular planet. The weather was there, obvious to be seen by whoever looked it. Why discuss it?Commander T’Leia
Healer Stovik“The gravity’s wrong. It’s supposed to be 1G. Earth gravity. It’s 0.98G. My parents promised me home gravity. Everyone here is very military. I don’t understand. I am a Lieutenant junior grade. But everyone calls me Lieutenant. That’s wrong. But it’s also wrong to call me Alan and no one does that. Why is one kind of wrong right?” Alan was a strange man. He showed no sign of being unsympathetic or uncaring, but he seemed insular, like his mind operated within itself and didn’t notice fully or appreciate the people around him.
-Alan Dysart
T’Leia blinked and looked at Stovik without answering Dysart. She seriously wondered if the man was sane. How had a being who seemed to be so far from reality been placed on an Earth ship? Was the Earth Fleet that lax?
Commander T’Leia
Stovik caught T’Leia’s look and being the rational being he was, was able to glean the intent behind it. He looked back at Dysart and spoke softly. He too wondered how such strange humans were able to be stationed on a starship. First the CMO and now this strange human. Highly illogical.
“Ship gravity on Earth ships is kept slightly lower to lessen the damage to the skeletal and muscular systems of humans.” He answered without addressing the strangeness of the other man’s words. As he had with the CMO, he treated him as if he was perfectly logical.Healer Stovik
Alan thought for a moment and then nodded. Then he looked quizzical. “Earth ships? Vulcan ships are different?”
-Alan Dysart
Stovik’s brow arched.” Yes, our natural gravity levels are higher as they match the gravity on Vulcan. It is what has given us greater muscular strength and bone density then humans.”
Healer Stovik
“Then why doesn’t the lessened gravity affect you more? If I can tell, why isn’t it hurting you? Or feeling strange?” He didn’t understand why the Vulcans seemed to set one standard that they didn’t need any help getting acclimated to life in space, where humans did. Why were they so different?
-Alan Dysart
“It does effect us in giving us greater strength in a lower gravity atmosphere such as this ship. Any other effects are overcome over time and adjustment.” Stovik said with a light shrug. “Just as humans seem to acclimatize over time.”
Healer Stovik
“In everything it seems you think humans and Vulcans are overly different. We are both warp capable societies from species born on minshara class planets.” Alan used the Vulcan word to describe their worlds. “Why are we different?” He didn’t understand the simple cultural differences. That humans were different for being emotional.
-Alan Dysart
Stovik’s brow raised a bit and he paused as he took a sip of tea before answering.”We are quite different physiologically, mentally and socially. The Vulcan species has many structural differences as well as copper rich blood which makes it a green color upon oxidation. Mentally we have a higher psi quotient due to an extra organ in our paracortex which allows for this. Our culture has evolved differently from Earth as well. We once were a savage and emotional species similar to humans but due to a collective choice made by our society after almost decimating ourselves with our psi gifts we chose a path of logic. ” This was a lot of information to condense but Stovik did the best that he could.
