[snip]Building the library so far seemed an easy process if the continued split ‘alien/english’ patterns continued. A few more large scale samples like the newspaper or the like and they would have a working translation database to use if needed.
El rolled her eyes. The tablet-worm had totally missed her call. “Oblivious. The man is oblivious,” she muttered, and came up alongside him as he as shuffling in the queue, he with his nose in his work and El holding the paper open in front of her as she walked. “Well would you look at this. I don’t think their weather prediction came true today. What do you think, Roger?”

Headlines were brief, but in short they talked about debates raging between the claimed to be peace loving and compromise wielding ‘Northern SEM Republic’ and the seemingly claimed to be more dangerous and militant ‘Southern MAC Dynasty’. No real outright declarations were made of any war, other than vague threats and possibilities. But the paper writer who it seemed favored the SEM Republic based on its tone felt it unlikely. The paper was backdated about a day and a half ago in age.
Lt. Isaac was still keeping an eye out trying to keep the team safe. He was keeping close to the team so if anything happens he can act fast.

Rachel gave Serinde and Sanks an odd look, her head cocked to the side “Most known humanoids have at least a passing resemblance to us Humans, as to why they’re stronger I would need more than just one subject to make any proper assessments. Better is a very subjective thought when it comes to genetics, they are quite simply…” She blinked “different”

From just to their left, sounds of running feet were heard coming their way. There was probably about 2 people running, but distant foot falls also made it seem like another group of 4-6 were not far behind.
Before they could fully take cover behind the rubble and cars they were around, two women, one in their late 40 or so years, the other in their early 20s, came around the corner in what seemed poor clothes for doing their activity. Long ankle length dresses dirty-white in color were accompanied by an equally dirty-white undershirt and leggings. Their shoes were short heeled by about a half an inch in length. They carried boxes in their arms which with the duel alien/english language written seemed to be some kind of meal packets from civil defense services. Frantically looking around they spoke in an accented like English. “..They are right behind us Mother! I told you we should not have come here!”
El didn’t think much of their wardrobe, which, coming from a girl who preferred fuzzy socks and loose sweats after her shift was quite the stretch. When she said ‘they are right behind us’ her gaze traveled behind them where the other footfalls were coming from. Her eyes narrowed and her hand strayed to her weapon.
”..Shush Catrice, by the Sol star from Forever! Keep moving, I heard movement here that sounded like it could be civil defense forces! They will show those MAC-ARM soldiers what is what!” She said looking about frantically as if hoping police forces would emerge, but besides the two women and the landing party no one else seemed present.
Who was what? Who was coming? Defense or the ‘Mac-Arm’ people? She frowned trying to puzzle it out.
As expected not far behind 4 men and a tall woman dressed in heavy leather military armor came around shouting for the women to stop and turn over the goods. “..Last chance you two! Turn over the supplies to us or face punishment for resistance!” The woman likely the leader of the five soldiers shouted. All five wielded ballistic thick barreled assault rifle firearms.
The two woman ignored the demands and started to sprit again, their path would take them pass the rubble and junked hover cars the landing party was behind.

El strained to figure out who they were. Military. But for what side? It certainly didn’t look like ‘civil defense’. They weren’t acting very ‘civilly’.
Ari was laughing as the linguist, almost like a typical librarian, was brought back to the present with a local paper. It was strange how some things, no matter the location or the time period, didn’t change. Knowledge people got sometimes so tunnel visioned, they didn’t pay attention. As a scientist, she was one of those and had to be careful, herself.
As soon as the approach was heard, Ari hissed to the others. She was grateful this wasn’t one of the times she had tunnel vision. “HIDE! We aren’t sure what side to be on. So let’s not be forced to choose now!” She took cover behind one of the vehicles where she could move around it as the party that was coming at them passed by. She glanced to the others to be sure they were doing the same thing. They didn’t want to be forced by the military to go where they didn’t want to. And didn’t want to be drawn into the civilian side of the conflict as supporters since they didn’t know what they would or wouldn’t be supporting.

El was not the quickest to react to that. Her ‘bent’ was to ‘do’ something and hiding wasn’t precisely what her nature went to. It didn’t happen in any of her novels; the hero was one who acted when people were in need, not cowering. Sure they didn’t know who was what but the women didn’t look like Davros or Sauron.
Roger had been wandering a bit absentmindedly, looking at everything around. All of the sudden, the two women came into view, and he moved out of the way to where they wouldn’t see him.
Everything happened kind of quickly. Roger heard the captain but was a little too far away from the others to properly take any cover. Caught in the middle of the street, Roger stood like a deer in headlights. Not sure who might notice him first, the two women or the military looking types. Either way it was too late now. He was pretty much out in the open. Deciding not to flee, he stood his ground, slowly raising his hands, palms forward in a non-threatening manner.

“This newspaper helps. This article talks about the Northern Republic and Southern Dynasty having issues with each other. But it doesn’t exactly say why. The weather says it is supposed to be raining right now, and it’s not, so yeah, that was inaccurate, El.” He replied before the people showed up and the team hid behind the vehicle with the captain.
Lt. Sanks, Linguist
Still close to a vehicle, El ducked, but she did slide her weapon out. If they were humane, to use a probably outdated word, they would fire a warning sh …
The two women gave Roger a brief look, but then gasped in pain as a string of ballistic bullets rang into their legs. The two collapsed at Roger’s feet bleeding badly and scattering the boxes of food and clothing. “..ARGH AIIIEEEE!” Cried both women as the soliders moved in on where Roger was fast. “..You!” Snapped the woman in charge of the group of 5 MAC-ARM soldiers. “..Get on the ground! Slowly or you join these fools in bleeding out on the ground!” She snapped.

Ari growled under her breath. Of all the things she didn’t want to happen…
.. ot .. El clenched her jaw, tense, coiled, and fingered the weapon. She could take them out and they deserved it and they could sort it out later. Shooting an unarmed woman and her mother and then implying they were going to let them bleed out and die. That was cruel; if they wanted to shoot to kill they could have done that and been more humane. Even a soldier wouldn’t do that for kicks.
She stood by for a moment. If they called for reinforcements, she would get her man free. Otherwise, she hoped they could talk their way out of the mess. Last thing she wanted was to stun locals inside of being on the ground less than an hour. But she also wasn’t going to let her man get taken into custody. Or worse, get shot.

COElizabeth mentally growled as well. Had she done something that wreckless, she had no doubts Baumann would leave her to the locals long enough to learn a valuable lesson on staying hidden. The worst of it was, he had actually been hidden when the Captain called for them to take cover. Why he found it necessary to remove himself from cover where no one could see him, to step into the road and throw his hands up, was beyond her. They all knew they were on a potentially hostile planet. For darkness sake, the entire planet was at war.
She shook her head and waited like a coiled spring for whatever the Captain ordered. She double checked her weapon was on stun and mentally measured the steps it would take to stun both military men. They’d have to drag them into the woods to keep them from being found, and the women as well if they couldn’t escape on their own. Then cover the dirt spot where blood had spilled… all the steps ran thru her mind as she waited with her breath half held, awaiting the order.

She was ready to fire and made a quick glance at the Captain, but if she waffled El was going to fire. She’d not let them get away with that or hurt Roger. The women needed medical assistance. Yes she was particularly prejudiced right now, her sense of right scandalized.
