The area around team 2 was thick brush and trees as Naomi had found. But not far ahead it thinned out to a wide open field spanning about a quarter of a mile in length leading up to a a 8ft tall metal wire mesh fence with razor wiring at the top. Scans in general showed no real life near them, radiation levels were up but not too dangerous for a few days of exposure. Distantly the occasional gun shot could be heard or a even more distant rumble or explosion lighting up the skyline far to their west. These were likely more common explosions and not nuclear based devices. Finally once in a while the overhead sound of fast moving jet based aircraft could be heard now and then.

Their first hurdle in approaching the base would be crossing the wide open field which did little to provide any sort of cover from this approach vector, they could try circling around for better vantages but that would take time and increase their risk of being detected or seen but at a glance through the visors there did not appear to be anyone on the surface of the base. The buildings present looked quite shut down and boarded up. Though there was a high energy reading coming from some distant below their feet ahead from the base, IDing it though didn’t match anything known yet

Baumann continued to look at the base through the visor, paying special attention to any possible surveillance devices. “We have a choice. We can either try and circle to find a better approach, but I sincerely doubt that will happen as they have cut back cover here so why would they not all around. We can approach now and hope that there is no one watching. Or we can wait for dark and make our approach. I recommend the latter.”

“How long until nightfall?” Jonathan said as he moved over towards Baumann. “Because I agree, it would be a better decision. And it would give us more time to observe the facility before we approach.”

Hearing a question about nightfall, Kenneth glanced up, trying to assess the position of the sun. “It’s not clear when night will fall. Did we determine the rotational velocity of the planet?”

Fleet, Helm

“If I remember our scans correctly… “Baumann said still surveilling the facility, “… it was almost identical to Earth.”

Baumann, Intel

The planet’s rotational speed was indeed near to Earth’s, in this case they had about 2-3 hours or so till night fully fell. For Baumanna still scanning the facility he couldn’t see much more to make out from here then previously mentioned. If the base was occupied it was doing a good job of looking abandoned or decommissioned. Lights were either blown out or simply unpowered and no signs of movement from locals was evident above the ground or what little they could scan below.

Naomi continued to scan the local whereabouts. She pulled in the device when it listed off the radiation levels, their number low and harmless for a few days. Easing her concern, she turned it off and slipped it into her belt. She took a moment to ensure it remained out of sight of any passive onlooker. Something bothered her about the readings. Not far from the base was a strange energy signature the scanner couldn’t identify. Without a proper laboratory or equipment, she couldn’t do much more than theorize its origins. Not something useful here.

She followed the edge of the thick brush and trees into an open field. Serene, untouched and wild with mid-calf deep greenery coated in the same ashy substances. Beyond that, an eight-foot-tall fence with a wired top circled an abandoned building. The windows boarded up and stained outside gave it an eerie discarded appearance.
In the distance, a gunfire sound broke the silence followed by a distant rumble. Her arms immediately wrapped around herself as she glanced about. The Science officer expected to see flickering shadows among the trees. A long, hollow sound breezed overhead of them. Naomi jerked downward then glanced up through the treetops. She blinked in surprise. What appeared to be an aircraft-design dated in the fifties or so- skimmed overhead and vanished in the distance.

Her throat swallowed the lump in the back. It slid down and thumped into her middle, a heavyweight nestled within. She chided herself for the anxiety attack getting worse.

“I’ve not seen one of those since my high school history lessons. That is a very, very old technology…” She mumbled, her body straightened upright once more. At the mention of going in at night, she glanced at the men.

“Okay, let’s hold onto that idea for a moment. My scanner picked up a strange high energy signature under the ground and near the base. I’m theorizing it’s not as abandoned as it looks. So no matter what time we go, we will possibly encounter someone at some point.” Naomi licked her lips then proceeded with additional information.

“Night has some advantages, but also disadvantages. I think individuals are more likely to shoot first, ask questions later when they can’t see their target. That aircraft that flew over, looked like it could’ve existed on Earth around the 1950s era,” at this point, she regretted sleeping through history class during most of her childhood, “If their technology developed the same way ours did, they likely have the same limitations.”

Naomi then pointed to the field as she stated the last fact on her mind, “I’m not sure, but I think landmines were around during that time. I don’t know about you, but that field looks perfect for setting some up. Do we want to risk that or find another way? If we do the latter, I suggest we use what daylight we have to find another path.”

Bohannon followed the team and did it offer much in response to the inquires around him.

Bohannon, CE

Baumann looked over at the Scientist and said “Absolutely correct, Ensign. But we must also remember that we are in a active war zone. I am fairly certain anyone will shoot us on site no matter the amount of light we have. Cover of darkness will give us a better chance.” The big German looked again at the perimeter.

“Mines are a definite possibility, but we can assess that easily enough. If you would be so kind as to scan the open ground and see if there are any concentrations of…” and he thought back to his armory days, “… steel, magnesium, phosphorous, or .... what was it… oh yes: trinitrotoluene. If you detect those, we can assume mines are present.”

Baumann, Intel

OOC: Appears a double post happened and split the thread, so I’m going to reply to the original one.

IC: Naomi couldn’t argue with the fact everyone was likely to shoot first, but she hoped daylight might’ve delayed it a little. Once more she pulled out her scanner and drew to the edge of the field. She pointed her device at it, set to read back the materials found in the location. The science took note of any concentrations of steel, magnesium, phosphorous, or trinitrotoluene. Even minerals with similar make-up were not ignored since she didn’t know much about the planet itself. Earth-like didn’t mean everything was identical.

“Let’s drop the ranks everyone,” Jonathan said looking at everyone. “We need to get into the habit of not using them, in case the worst happens.”

Looking back towards the compound he studied it for a bit while they looked for mines. “Plus the cover of darkness will allow us to better asses what sort of monitoring they might have. So while they are looking for mines, everyone else see if you can detect any monitoring devices.”

Putting down the equipment he had helped grab, he pulled out his own scanner as he hunkered down, and started searching for any scanning or monitoring devices in the area.
