With a hum the entire team group by group was brought down from the Bonnie safely by transport. The team as indicated by the NE chief earlier was outside a large town or small city. They currently were among some dense scrub which was already being coated by a film of dirt, dust, ash, and snow from nuclear fallout. Thankfully with the precautions taken before they wouldn’t have to worry about fallout for a little while. In the distance sirens were weakly wailing, and a ballistic gun shot or two echoed by shouting was heard, but nothing was nearby.

The only other thing evident to their proximity was a road going north and south a sign in the local language alphabet they couldn’t decipher was interesting echoed by one in english just below it! It read North-South Rt 116. Nearby was a green sign in the same duel alien/english script. It read Lexi’ton 1/2 mile. The fact they were referencing Earth based measurements and such was quite....odd to say the least.

Isaac was with his group he had a MaCo phase pistols In a holster within his jacket he kept his eyes open for anything that meant danger.

El glanced at the scrub. It was different from the more tropical or sub tropical foliage that she was used to growing up and certainly not quite like the English hedges and heather. Her nose wrinkled at the dust and unconsciously she pulled the hoodie up further. Her toe kicked at the dust on the ground, stirring up a small cloud. She would be having one serious shower later on after this, she thought. She scanned the horizon for the source of the sounds but it looked like it was yet too far away to tell. Squinting at the sign she spoke up. “If we’re one of the first humans out in space how can we have a world like this?”

Moving over closer to where Roger was she commented, “Talk about Rosetta Stones. If this is common it will make your translation pretty easy.” Indeed already she was putting her mind to that and took out her scanner to record that for a possible translation matrix. What was the tech here? Ballistic weapons? Plasma weapon platforms? Nuclear missiles? An impossible colony from Earth? The idea was perplexing but exciting too to consider.

Rachel looked around the area for a moment whilst casually checking to see if all her fingers and toes were still there. She knew there were no real health risks to transporters but still, she’d yet to find an engineer she trusted with pulling her apart then putting her back together on a molecular level. She cocked her head as she read the sign. “Lexi’ton” She read aloud “If we do make contact we should try’n hear what they sound like, if they be humans mayhaps they speak in some odd creole or american.”

El certainly agreed with that. By all rights, the town on the horizon looked Earthy. The language seemed English. She’d be happy with some good old fashioned Chinese characters though. While her accent was not a strong Asian one it was certainly not ‘North American’ in any of its varieties. She pulled out her scanner from one of her coat pockets and, shielding the lit up display with her hands ran a scan, first for radiation levels and if, where they were heading it was higher, and second, for energy readings that went beyond normal street light levels. She could have done a scan for life signs but they could hear them ahead and so seemed unnecessary.

Roger looked around in awe, despite the feeling of danger and destruction all around them. He walked around the immediate area slowly, looking at everything around, the flora in particular. He didn’t notice any fauna, but no doubt they had fled and went into hiding.

Noticing that he’d strayed a bit from the main group, Roger turned and made his way back to where they all were by the road sign. He waited for the Captain to give further orders.

What were the people doing now, El wondered. There was gunfire but why? Who was fighting who? If this was a nation versus nation battle a little town shouldn’t have fighting, not after a large scale nuclear exchange not to mention plasma weapons from space. One didn’t do that … though she didn’t know much. “Who are the combatants?” she asked. “Why is there gunfire? Are there two races on this planet and they are at war?” If they were ‘mixed’ race cities that could explain it. Her eyes cast about to Roger and the others. She was in engineering and had no real clue. It would be nice to know if she should be concerned more about bug headed creatures than people shooting at them. El was eminently unsure of other races and aliens fighting humans simply didn’t sit well with her.

After making sure everyone was safe and sound, she opened the comm to the other team to be sure they were safe as well. [O]Ari to Jonathan… everyone safe? [O] She felt odd using first names. But with not knowing who could potentially be listening, she thought it better than last names and especially ranks.

While awaiting an answer, she glanced at the others. “Everyone with readers, make sure you scan the sign in Common and matching alien sign. We will need to certainly build a written library if not a spoken one right away. And as to who is fighting and why? Of that, I’m not sure of. I’m guessing the races here are mixed if we have ground fighting when such a global scale is also being waged. Let’s do our best to steer clear of any major conflicts we see. So everyone buddy up and keep your eyes peeled. We’re going to head to the populated area and see if we can get some questions answered.” She didn’t like so many variables this close up. But there was no helping it. Now to play ‘stupid mountain folk’ and see what they could gleen from the locals.

Lt Sanks looked at the sign in amazement. “I know right, I still want to see if we can see what alien language it is though. Make sure we aren’t just walking into some sort of trap.” Lt. Sanks responded to El as he was accessing the sign with his translator. He wanted to make sure what was written in this broken English was correct. He didn’t pay much attention to anything else.

Elizabeth made scans of the signs in pairs to be sure she could match them up at the ship. With the Captain reminding everyone to be vigilant and aware, she smiled. She’d been on enough away missions to know you left as small a footprint as you could and in First Contacts, though this was her first, she knew it had to be a nearly invisible footprint. She took as many samples and scans as she could and then moved back closer to the group to await orders to move out.
