[snip]

El had arrived just as the Captain had begun to head them out to the transporter room. They would have to go down in four separate groups, she noted as she counted the numbers. She was excited. It would be her first transport - and away mission in her career - and that into a nuclear maelstrom in a technologically .. lesser planet. But not by too much, she noted. She chewed a knuckle with some nervous excitement as she waited for the others to file past her whereupon she took up the rear. The knuckle was one step up from her usual nail biting; she took that to be a therapeutic improvement, but wanted the doc to be in front of her as she did it.

She had taken time to … finesse. What was ‘she’ doing on a mission to an alien planet to presumably blend in, what with her distinct Asian features and all. To forestall that she wore a kind of rugged trouser, hiking style boots and a hoodie over a dark tee. That would cover her head and hair and hide her features reasonably well; she worried more of her accent but then what would she find for how the people spoke? Over that she wore a trench style coat that had pockets, and over that a shoulder satchel. On her person she had her scanner and what she deemed to be more of an all purpose multi-tool that, between the scanner and it would work as a useful lock pick. She sported some anti-radiation tablets and a pair of glasses that were a mix of night vision and a more limited scan potential and able to yield some data across the screen on what she was seeing. They could zoom but not that far. But it was a work in progress. Her pistol was in a pocket in her coat.

  • El, Eng

El had a number of energy bars in the pockets of her coat accompanied by a bottle of water purification tablets. Between her coat, hoodie and glasses she felt that her features would be sufficiently camouflaged. She had read a number of post apocalyptic novels of the present and past and every one seemed to have groups who traveled the tundras poaching supplies and were heavily armed. By the looks of it this wasn’t one of them, but it did appear so romantic in the novels. This was just the beginning of the woes of the planet; by the look of it the exchange was much worse than what happened on Earth. El figured she was as prepared as she could be given it to be a meet and mingle kind of mission. Inwardly she envied the chief who was going to be looking at military operations which meant their tech. El feared the greatest tech she would run into would be an expresso machine, though there could be worse tech to meet up with.

“Where are we beaming down to?” she asked, not to anyone in particular but to the group at large ahead of them. “And what are we looking for?” She had been called to be a part of the mission; at the moment she still didn’t quite know why.

Roger saw El, and started walking with her. “I’m glad you’re in our group, how are you?” he asked her.

Lt. Sanks, linguist

El flashed a grin. “First time transporting. Down to an apocalyptic scene? What’s a girl not to like?” she answered. Then, asked, “What kind of language are they speaking? Do we know what they look like? I mean, if they have two heads we’ll kinda stand out.”

Rachel followed the team quietly. She carried herself a little differently, walking slightly crooked so as not to draw attention to her unusual height. She listened in on the conversations going on without input.

Once everyone was assembled, they headed for the transporter room. With luck the other team was already down and they wouldn’t be hovering in the hallway long.

“All right, everyone. Weapons up and hidden. I want them brought out only in an emergency. We’re trying to figure out how to get out of here, not become part of their history.” She smiled but her nerves were showing a bit, for those who knew her.

Heading into the hallway and towards the transporter room, she listened to the light hearted banter of the crew. When Elizabeth joined them on the deck, she smiled. “Will be nice to have another brain around. Things working out all right in Intel for you with Baumann?” She had approved the woman’s transfer and was glad her love had someone to help him. As Captain, this was one of the jobs she couldn’t help with. Sometimes he would have to keep things from her and they had managed so far.

She just hoped it didn’t get to the point it was a strain.

Elizabeth nodded to the Captain as she joined the small entourage heading down the corridor. “Yes, Ma’am. It’s been great. I had no idea so much went into missions and transmissions and logs and everything else.” She laughed lightly as the sense of overwhelming knowledge rolled off her. It was true she was learning a lot. She just hoped it was enough to be a good asset to the Captain on this team.

NC Chief looked up as the Captain’s team filed in. “..You folks all ready? I’ll be setting you down about 100 yards outside a large town maybe a small city depending on your views. The place is awash in turmoil but that should provide good cover for you till things settle down, plus there doesn’t appear to be too much looting or rioting by the local populace.” He said.

“Perfect, Chief. Thank you. And I know it’s a lot. But let me know the first thing if you lose the ability to get us back. I have Travors is on standby at the shuttle, but he won’t be able to grab both teams quickly if things go sideways.”

Smiling at the others, she nodded and stepped onto the dais. Protocol would put a security and a medical staff with her in first beam down. She knew they all knew their roles and wouldn’t have to give instructions. The rest would trickle down as the transporter was ready. “All right folks, let’s get down there so we can get back.”

Roger stood off to the side, likely to be with the second group to be transported. He wondered what they would find there on the planet. He was quite curious what the locals were like and to learn more about what had happened here.
