<snip>Kenny turned his head to look at the plants, then he actually put his fork down and spun around in his chair to look at them more closely. His finger dug into the soil slightly, feeling it. “Have you considered that you might be overdoing any of those things?” he said, not turning back to look at her as he was now in the green-thumb zone. He lifted the leaves and ran a finger along the edge of the plant. His finger dug into the soil at the edge, searching for roots. “From what I can see, it looks like nitrogen poisoning. You know, some plants need a lot less fertilizer than others. I learned that the hard way one spring when I was a kid. I was fertilizing the pines, and my grandma looked ready to strangle me when she found out how much I was giving those poor plants. I got to see for myself that summer as those trees got an almost sickly yellow pallor, and the ones that got the right amount of fertilizer. It… was an enlightening experience.”
Kenny turned back to smile at Naomi. “It could also be overwatering, or a combination of both…” he muttered, then turned back to the plant, digging a little in the soil and pulling out a little root. “Oh shit. Or it could be that. Yeah, you’re definitely overwatering these little guys. This is root rot. You’ve got a bit of a fungal infection going on in these roots, and that’s going to really hinder the ability of the roots to soak up water. So it looks like they’re being underwatered,” he gestured to the browning leaves. “But it’s actually the opposite. You’re going to have to uproot these little guys and put them in fresh, clean soil, then make sure you monitor how much water they get to make sure you don’t overwater them and leave them in damp soil.”

OOC: so apparently I’m a plant nerrd cause that was fun to write :P
“That was one thing I didn’t consider the soil storing the water. The other girl never writes down what she’s done on her list and the soil’s so thick, it sucks up. So I can never tell if it’s been done or not. It’s rather bloody annoying.” Naomi grumbled.
She considered doing it now, but she preferred to wait. Her meal took priority over the flora who had been sitting in stale water for any number of days. It wouldn’t kill them instantly to tolerate it for a little longer.
“I’ll get to changing them after we’re done with our meal. I don’t think a few more minutes will instantly kill them.” The ensign hoped her lack of plant empathy didn’t insult him.
“How’s your family doing?” Naomi picked a topic she knew he wouldn’t ignore.

OOC: Now I know two people who are plant nerds, does this mean your house will look like a jungle too? XD
OOC: no, actually. I know a lot about them but I don’t stick in one place long enough to keep em alive. I have one plant and it’s dying because I left it at my parent’s house for one single month and my mother murdered it.
IC: Kenny chuckled. “No worries about that,” he wiped off his fingers on his shirt, not worrying about the dirt now staining his uniform, and turned back to his food. “Unlike animals who, if something is wrong usually need immediate assistance, plants work on a slower time scale. Plus, good to know it wasn’t necessarily your fault they’re in a bad way,” he added with a small thumbs up.
After a moment of munching on his meal, Kenny sat up slightly again. “Ah, yeah. Family. They’re doing well. Dealing with Allison’s disappearance was difficult on everyone, but I think by the time I left home my parents were mostly adjusted. I think it was good I was home… let me help them through it… and vice versa.” He took a deep breath, closing his eyes. “Still, it was hard for us to part, since it was out in space where the accident happened.”

Naomi didn’t know what to say. Her hand reached out and gently laid on top of his free on. A gesture of kindness to ease the pain that she couldn’t do through words. For a moment, she regretted asking about his family since she had forgotten about their loss.
“I’m sure whatever happened, she’s fine now. I wish I could say or help more, but best I am is just a set of ears.” She tried to lighten the mood she caused.
It was a subject she tended to avoid in order to keep things fun and light between them. With the time he spend in a coma, she regretted not touching on both good and bad.

“We haven’t heard anything good. Starfleet said the three of them are missing, presumed dead. No way they could survive over a month inside a shuttle. Less if it crashed on whatever that planetoid was. Too small for an atmosphere according to the limited scanning capability. No air… crash. Dead. I have this… hope though. I dunno. It’s probably not worth a lick, but,” he trailed off. “I got this message. From a stranger. Before my crash, I think it was before my promotion, there was this time thing, see. I was working with some people from the future to fix our engines. And one of them gave me this,” he gestured into the air, “this cryptic message. Two Fleets fly. One is hidden for a time in a cloudbank, but emerges safely after many cycles. I don’t know what it means. Not really. But I think it means she’s okay.”

Naomi was silent for a moment. She digested the cryptic message, but nothing she had provided any encouragement. She pulled her fingers together and pressed them to her lips. After a few moments passed, she lowered them again.
“There’s no sure way to know. I think if you want to strongly believe she’s okay and it helps, there’s no reason not to. As long as it doesn’t turn into something harmful.” Naomi inwardly flinched at her weak response, but she didn’t know how else to say it.
Unlike some people, she didn’t usually hold things back or could put them delicately. It often caused issues between her mother and her on numerous occasions. With a held breath, Naomi watched him to observe his reaction to her words.

Kenny shrugged. He was used to Naomi’s bluntness, and it didn’t bother him. He usually appreciated her honesty, but with this topic there was a weird extra bit of hope. “It’s something, at the very least,” he said with a small smile, then leaned forward and said quietly, “He also gave me this super old data crystal. Super old for him, future for us. He said he wasn’t technically supposed to give it to me because time stuff, but he also said the tech to actually read the data off it wouldn’t exist for… a while. Not till I’m in my 70s or 80s. I… left it at home for safekeeping. Makes me kinda nervous. Like, it could be something about Allie, but the idea that it might be that didn’t even cross my mind when I got it because, ya know, the whole she wasn’t gone at that point. But now it feels like that’s the only thing it could be.”
“I bet it’s got something about my kids, or cool stuff like that. Maybe that stranger was one of our descendants…” he gave Naomi a soft smile, leaning forward and putting a hand on hers. “Imagine that… having a legacy that stretches forward hundreds of years. Like, that dude actually remembered me specifically, knew he was going back into the past… I guess that info chip has data on who he is so that we can make sure he ends up with a copy of it in the far future so that he can bring it back to me so I can make sure he makes it… and wow, that’s wacky and just got a lot more complicated. Geeze louise.”

Noami nodded in silence. Her fork twisted another bite of spaghetti into her mouth, her teeth chewed it thoughtfully. She didn’t even want to consider what she would’ve done in his shoes and thanked the stars he had a better shoulder on his head than her. Things would’ve ended up disastrous. The idea of waiting until his life was nearly over for closure of any sort didn’t feel right in her opinion.
When he touched her hand, she turned hers upward and grasped his. An attempt to return the kindness in her own way.
“True, but I’m more glad nothing bad came out of it. Some theories support a negative impact when you try to meddle with the future and leave things behind.” Naomi hated to be a spoilsport, but the very idea chilled her to the bone. She was glad things turned out better than they did.
She sighed. “Not that I’m not happy you might have some answers even if it takes a long time to get them.”

Kenny gave her a small smile. “Time travel is weird,” he agreed before turning back to his pasta. “How has the ship been since I left?” he asked quietly, closing his eyes for a moment to enjoy the taste of his meal. “I mean, I expect it to be along the lines of same-old-same-old, but you know…”
