Roger was still growing accustomed to the daytime hours. Since becoming the Chief Science Officer, and switching from the night shift to more traditional day shift working hours, he had found himself seeing faces of crew members he had barely seen before. With such a small crew compliment, Roger had studied the duty rosters, and he knew who most of the crew were, but he hadn’t had much chance to interact with many of them.He had finished up a shift in the science lab and then made his way here to the mess hall. Typically during his late night shifts, he would just replicate something and take it to eat in the science labs as he worked alone. Now, he had replicated a cheeseburger and French fries and a cherry cola for himself. He stood, holding his tray of food, smiling as he looked around the room and noticed a few other crew there eating, talking, laughing.
Not wanting to intrude on anyone, he took a seat at one of the empty tables, and picked up a French fry and popped it into his mouth.
-Roger Ferguson, CSO
OOC: Anyone free to join :)
“That seat taken?” A voice behind the scientist seemingly appeared. When he turned around he’d see an unusually tall woman stood behind him holding a tray with a salad bowl and a glass of orange juice. She what could best be described as a wild mane of bright ginger red hair kept in check only with a small blue ribbon barely holding it in place. She wore the standard Starfleet uniform with the blue science colors but she was not a member of his Science staff and her rank pips signified her as a Lieutenant.
Dr. Grey - CMO
“It is not,” Roger said cheerfully. “Please, have a seat. It’s Doctor Grey, am I correct?” He let out a small chuckle. “I haven’t seen much of the day shift people since I came on board. Usually if I have a medical issue it’s NE Berry I get the pleasure of seeing.”
Roger took a swig of his cherry cola and gave Rachel his trademark grin.
Rachel sat down “Aye that’s me, ye can call me Rachel, Don’ have my doctors coat on right now” Both figuratively and literally. “Well you should be seeing more of Doctor Blackwell, she’s taking the night shift from now on.”
“Mind if I join?” a few moments later, a second voice piped up. A young voice, belonging to a fairly young man. He wore operations yellow on his shoulders, with the rank markings of a Lieutenant. He felt more at ease among the Department heads sometimes, his rank earning him odd looks from the ensigns wondering what a Helm officer was doing with Lt. stripes. Those of them who were new enough not to remember his brief time as Chief Engineer, that is.
“Absolutely!” Roger said joyfully, pulling out the chair next to him. “Have a seat my friend.”
A plate piled with two grilled cheese sandwiches was in one hand, and a glass of milk in the other. Brown hair fell evenly over his forehead, framing deep green eyes. “Good to see you Rachel,” he smiled at the CMO, then looked to the CSO. “And you’d be Roger Ferguson, I presume? I think I saw you on the bridge.”
Fleet, Helm
Roger wiped his hands clean with a napkin and then held one out in Kenneth’s direction. “Roger Ferguson. I don’t think we have had the pleasure of an introduction. I’ve been permanently assigned to the overnight shift since my arrival.”
-Roger Ferguson, CSO
After putting his tray on the table, Kenneth gripped Roger’s hand firmly and nodded. “It’s nice to properly meet you, Rog.” he spoke, a mild london accent mixed into his fairly neutral Southern Ontario accent.
“This is Leftenant Kenneth Fleet” she introduced the man “Our very capable helmsman and former Chief Engineer” She said in a teasing voice “Although he will deny that fact as much as he can” She placed some salad in her mouth and chewed rather loudly despite her mouth being closed.
Dr. Grey - CMO
Fleet huffed slightly. He’d been about to properly introduce himself. “I won’t deny the fact that I took the CE position for a while, but it was the worst few months of my life. Did you hear, they say I got myself whacked on the head on purpose?” Honestly if I hadn’t been the one getting whacked, I might have thought that too!” he chuckled. “But I digress.” The Helmsman sat down and took a sip of his beverage. “Oh, and please just call me Kenny when we’re off duty. I’m only Kenneth to my grandmother…”
Fleet, Helm
bump
Roger chuckled. “Whacked on the head, eh? This sounds like a story for sure!” He looked over at Rachel. “Is this one of those stories better told from the doctor’s perspective or the patient’s?” He grinned.
-Roger Ferguson, CSO
Rachel raised her hands “I think this is a story for Kenny, I wasn’t much involved in that”
Dr. Grey - CMO
Kenny chuckled, taking another sip of his milk before leaning back and scratching at a spot on his scalp. “Where do I begin? Eh… I was on a spacewalk checking the damage after a fight, and a big piece of debris that we hadn’t noticed peeling off from the hull came over and thud!” he tapped his scalp. “Smacked right through my EVA. Lucky me, transporters got a lock before I boiled away, but it was a nasty knock. Or so I’ve heard. Last thing I remembered was my JO screaming at me to get out of the way. Didn’t even see it coming. Then I wake up and it’s been like… two weeks. And I’m being shipped back to Terra Firma to recover until the doctors are sure I’m not going to relapse.”
He leaned forward conspiratorially, and spoke at a normal level, pretending to whisper. “Just between you and me, I get a little dizzy when I stand up sometimes, but I’m pretty sure that happened before the ‘accident’ so don’t tell the doctors.” He leaned back and gave Rachel a little wink. He’d already mentioned it to her the day before.
Kenny, Helm
Rachel answered his wink with her own crooked smile “Oh I won’t tell, I promise” She said before turning her attention to the food infront of her.”
Dr. Grey - CMO
Roger chuckled jovially. “That is a wonderful story. I am glad that you made it through and your recovery was a success.” He smiled, his eyes twinkling. “I cannot believe I hadn’t heard that story before. The night shift is usually full of idle gossip. It helps pass the quiet and the long hours.”
Looking over at Rachel, he said, “Now lets hear a story from you. I wonder if you can top that one.” He looked back over at Kenny and winked.
-Roger Ferguson, CSO
Rachel cocked her head, a single piece of lettuce stuck out of her mouth which she rather noisily slurped up and chewed quickly. “Well I can’t say there have been many events which would make for entertaining stories, I rarely leave the ship and I do take my patient’s Privacy rather seriously” She said with a thoughtful expression “I do have some stories of my time studying with the Andorians before I joined the fleet, We had a few crossings with some xenophobe terrorists, or the time I broke a wee Andorian General. Perhaps some stories from military training.” She said rather casually.
Dr. Grey - CMO
Roger’s eyes lit up. “Military training huh? Oh I bet there are a lot of stories hidden deep in there. All those muscular sweaty military types.” He chuckled to himself. “I myself don’t have many exciting tales to tell. My life has been rather free of drama and story worthy events.” He paused, thinking. “Although there was this one time my sister and I encountered a Burmese python during one of our family vacations…” His voice trailed off as his eyes wandered.
Just them the Chief Engineer walked into the Mess Hall. He stopped and got a dinner plate and a cup of coffee. He then looked around for a place to sit. It was hard for the chief to sit because he could not been as being to friendly with lower ranks but, at the same time, he wanted them to like him.
Bohannon, CE
Roger saw Jay standing there holding his tray. He held up his arm in the air, waving the man over towards their table emphatically. There was one empty chair, and the man looked like he could use some company.
-Roger Ferguson, CSO
“Ooh, tales of Andorians?” Kenny leaned in Rachel’s direction, a glint in his eye. “I’ve got a few of my own. Secondhand, unfortunately, but as my big sister tells it, they’re quite the group.” He sobered up slightly. “Well, as she told it. But that’s besides the point.” Rachel had been on the ship long enough to know about what had happened to Allison Fleet, and it depended on how keenly Roger kept an eye on the news feeds as to whether he’d heard about the shuttlecraft accident that had stolen the lives of three young officers from Earth’s Flagship about a year back. And it also depended on Roger’s skills of connecting the dots whether he’d linked the lost Ensign Fleet to the young Lieutenant by surname.
Fleet was saved from his reminiscing by the arrival of a man he realized must be his replacement down below. He gestured at the man to join in Roger’s gesturing. “Jay Bohannon. You must be the guy they sent in to fill in when I got conked. I hope the old girl isn’t giving you too much trouble. I’m glad there’s someone in charge who actually wants to be in there.” He would clap Jay on the back if the man sat down, the grin on his face and the words he spoke hopefully conveying there were no hard feelings. In fact, he was happy that Jay was in the engine room, it freed him up to pilot the ‘old girl’.
Fleet, Helm
Bump!!
Atozi had been ‘ear wiggling’ or was it wigging? She couldn’t remember what her roommate called it, either way her Intrest was peaked at the mentions of Andorians and so she decided to introduce herself. She picked herself up from the table she was sat and walked over to where the conversation was being held. “I couldn’t help ear wiggling you say something about Andorians, It turns out I’m quite the subject matter expert when it comes to andorians” She wiggled her ears to emphasis her point and smiled before adding, “Ensign Atozi Sh’qyrin” She held out a blue hand.
- Atozi Sh’qyrin
Kenny looked at the Andorian in shock, then grinned and held out his own hand, shaking hers with cheery enthusiasm. “Well, I think I just one-upped my sister. She never had an Andorian crewmate,” he said, giving the woman a wide grin. “Name’s Kenneth Fleet, but everyone round here calls me Kenny. I pilot the old girl,” he said, affectionately patting the wall he was sitting next to.
