El noted the sudden crash out of warp, not as much physically as much as other alarms blaring on the consoles where the computers and engines were ‘complaining’ at their abrupt departure from what otherwise had been a smooth sail. Not having time to see what was going on out there El slapped the console to silence the blare of the alarm, though the flashing lights remained. Her eyes poured over the scrolling status bar faster than most would be able to do; El was scanning for noted words and things that were ‘bad’. By all accounts something had suddenly popped their bubble forcing them out of warp, and by the accounts of the limited sensor information they had, it was still out there. They were stuck with impulse until they could either get around that or get out of that.

“Galen!!” El called back, hoping to catch him before he had departed. Surely he’d not have scarpered off when the ship did it’s belly flop into normal space.

“Here,” Galen said. His eyes were wide. “I heard the engines backfire.”

She wanted to lecture him in that ‘Cochranes’ didn’t backfire, and certainly not her beloved Cochranes. “Run a quick diagnostic on the warp engines for any strain or issues. I’m going to toss come coal into the impulse engines to see if they are okay.”

“Right. What happened?” he asked.

“I’ve no idea. There’s a force out there that wasn’t there a minute ago that is messing with forming a warp field. Chief is up on the bridge. He’ll find out more.”

With that El moved to impulse control. They were always ‘on’ per se as you can’t just cold start a fusion engine. Scanning the status they looked fine. Even if they had a bubble busting force out there it shouldn’t interfere with straight newtonian physics of force and counterforce.

Looking at scans relayed from the bridge, they could see they were in the new system they had planned to go too, but where they had originally expected three planets there was now FOUR. The fourth of which they were in orbit of right now and which had been the source of the strange gravity anomalies which now spanned 4 light years in scope and were disrupting the formation of the warp field and long range comms. Effectively they were stranded in the middle of unexplored space, with no means to go to warp or call for help.

“Oh no that is not good at all,” El said running a quick computation in her head. 4 light years. Safe impulse was 40 years till they got clear of that to warp out. She groaned. On cook’s food she’d be .. huge!
“What?” Galen asked.
“Somehow that planet is pushing out gravities anomalies that is killing our warp bubble. And we’re stuck here unless we find a solution.”
“You’re full of good news today.”
“Just full of good cheer. But hey, happy new year.”

The warp engine was stable thankfully so power wasn’t an issue, the main problem was the emissions of those pesky gravity waves from the planet. No sign off hand of what was causing it was evident but the power demands had to be huge which normally should be picked up on sensors but they werent

Bohannon knew something was up from the bridge and returned to Engineering to assist his team. As he walked in everyone heard him shout…

“Report!”
