Alison quickly made her way to the Science Labs, it was the best place to start, and hopefully come up with a plan on how they were going to make sure that Bane had truely left the ship.

Looking around she wondered with Frank and Naomi were.

As she waited though, now was the perfect chance to start seeing if she could pick up any readings from where Bane had entered the ship.

They had the sensor data from when Bane first … detached from? Left? … his own ship and so they had some things to go by for details. The disturbing thing was that the same ‘quantum signature’ was the same reading they had for Bane’s ship as though they were one and the same. Thus the readings were not hard to obtain in that way. Inside the ship it was somewhat more coarse and not as refined and that was down to a kind of ‘haze of quantum energy’ once he entered the ship.

But she had a starting point there.

Frank appeared a short while later from the Botony lab. “You Rang, Ma’am? How may I be of assistance?” He wiped his dirty hands on a rag as he walked in.

“Hmm?” Alison said as she was looking through the sensor data. “Oh, yes, I did. Come take a look at these readings,” she said as she moved to the side. “We’ve had a recent first contact with this alien race. He calls himself Bane and could phase right through our ship. It looks like he has the same signature as the ship he came from…”

Alison trailed off for a second as she looked over the readings, maybe the ship was part Bane. “We need to see if Bane has really left the ship. I don’t think we can tune the internal sensors to really detect if Bane has left the ship or not, but we can try and see if we can find him leaving on external sensors.”

Alison stared at the readings again, hoping to pinpoint the exact moment that Bane entered the ship. Perhaps there was some shift in the quantum signature that showed Bane coming onto the ship. If there was a shift though, it would make it easier to see if there was another shift as Bane left the ship.

Bridge recordings could pinpoint the time of when Bane came onto the ship, and where it was specifically.

A finer look at the area and the metal makeup on a quantum level had it look like the atoms had simply been ‘shifted’ over briefly, like someone walking through water would displace the water for that moment.

“Hmm,” the elder scientist said as he pushed his glasses up his nose to take a closer look. “Well quantum physics really isn’t my forte but it looks like here.” He pointed at one of the logs, “he walked in on the ship, yeah? Like someone walking through water. Looks like to me if we want to track his movements we should look for a wake.” he uses his hands to draw a V in the air, “Should have two parts, the v from the initial split and then some cavitation behind, right? Well there is a third dimension to the cavitation but you get my point.”

‘Oh, this was a perfect time to oversleep!’ Naomi thought, her mental voice scolding her.

Her figure sped down the corridor as she straightened out the wrinkles in her uniform shirt. She flipped from studying her image to the incoming traffic, aiming to avoid unnecessary collisions. It didn’t help her mind was racing over the reprimand she was bound to get for her lateness. For those who knew her, there was logically a reason. Maybe not a great one, but a decent one. In this case, she had spent most the night reading Beyond Time Science, a digital magazine where many scientists share, explain or theorize about new discoveries. It was difficult to pass up especially when she was often studying year old news. Space email definitely needed improvement in the future, she mused.

The lab door hissed open when Naomi popped in, spotting Silva first and popping off with a comment, “I’m sorry for being late, I stayed up ast night reading the articles in Beyond Time. It was a real page-turner even if my copy is a year old when I get it.”

“No worries Lieutenant. We can talk about the theoretical discoveries later. Right now we are trying to come up with a way to locate our guest to make sure he has left the ship,” Alison said turning briefly towards Naomi.

“So,” she said looking back at Frank, “the theory is pretty sound. There should be some sort of lingering disturbance as he passed through the material. And it is a pretty sound theory as we use it all the time. It’s how we can track ships in space, by looking at the wakes. The key though is identifying Bane’s wake. We have the exact time he came onto the bridge…”

Alison trailed off as she thought about it for a second. Could it really be that easy?

“Let’s start with the sensor logs in that section, and look specifically at the minute prior to his arrival on the bridge to one minute after he appears. See if we can detect anything with the onboard sensors, before we have to dive in for a more detailed look.”

On a broad sense, like the recordings off the bridge, and what sensor information there was, it was pretty limited to the point of ‘seeing’ Bane essentially come through as as a wisp of smoke or mist, but it didn’t set off any hull integrity alarms or anything like that.

What they had was a visual, the sensor information broadly picking him up as he formed into the being, and a more focused scan on the two bulkhead areas where he entered and left. It looked like it may be down to hand held devices scanning the bulkheads for the defined ‘wake’.
