The container deposited in the area with the crates and such, Kenny wasted no time in wrapping his arms around Naomi in a tight hug and placing a gentle kiss on the top of her head. “I missed you,” he muttered quietly, pulling back to look her in the eyes. “Man, I forgot how short you are,” he teased, grinning sappily down to her.

  • Kenny, Helm

Roger moved with the group helping carry the heavy container. “I have served a couple ships as a security officer, which probably where I get that look from. I thought about joining the marines, but ended up in Starfleet instead.” He told El. “You seem to be able to speak other languages, what do you know?” He followed up asking her.

“You know it would be really good to be able to make a kind of hover cart,” El mused. “Base it on an inverse magnetic field to stay above the deck. Would make transporting these things easier.” She found the labor a nice change in the day and the lugging of things refreshing. “I picked up a number of languages by osmosis. Or location. I grew up close to China, have mixed parentage so Cantonese I learned as a girl. Growing up I split between some Indian and African tongues. I know some German and Russian. Boy I sound like a pirate with this bit of this and that.” She laughed. The languages she had just picked up from whom she had been around, or, in the case of native languages, constantly immersed in it from her parents.

OOC: Took a little off since the thread was getting rather long for my tablet to scroll down.

IC: When Kenny spoke, Naomi tensed then relaxed. It had been a while since they had any close contact. Mostly he laid in bed, and she read a book, glancing over to him. Every day she checked in on his condition and it remained the same. Until yesterday when the nurse refused to confirm his status, resulting in Naomi questioning the best or worst. The moment she saw him enter the cargo bay, she immediately knew the rest and it made sense.

She chuckled at his comment over her height. “As Tay said, I’m fun-size. With you walking around, it explains why the nurse refused to give information about your condition yesterday.”

Her arms rested against him, enjoying his presence. For the months that followed since his accident, she wondered why she hadn’t moved on. Even now, she still wondered. Tay mentioned it had been because Kenneth had been the best man in her life so far and that was true. She couldn’t deny that fact.

Naomi sighed then shared a thought she had been milling over. “I should be mad at you. I honestly feared the worst. You know they get into trouble if they give false information, right?”

Her eyes tilted up to lock with him, but her voice held no bitterness in it. She still glowed from the site of him.

“I didn’t know you were going to check in,” Kenny said, letting out a slightly pouty smile. “It was supposed to be a surprise.”

He leaned down and kissed her nose. “But I’m sorry I made you worry. If I’d known that would cause you distress, I wouldn’t have tried that.”

Kenny, Helm

“I don’t think you sound like a pirate, you just have seen the whole Earth, and learned from your experiences, I think that is cool.” He told as they continued to move the containers.

“My parents were horrible,” she laughed. “Between them they knew many of the languages I know and were merciless in teaching me.” While she used strong words, her tone was not light. “They would each come at me with one of the languages they spoke and I was supposed to talk back with that. I ended up with a kind of pigeonspeak, a mix of them.”

She hauled over a pallet jack to move something really large and circular and well packaged so that she didn’t know what it was. “What does a linguist do on board?” she asked after pushing the forks into the steel pallet frame and engaging the lift motors.
- El

“I maintain the communications system of the ship. I make sure the universal translators are running, and send or receive messages from other ships or Starfleet’s headquarters. Like the message that the captain sent to bring us all here to do this task, came through my console on the bridge.” He told her watching as she moved the pallet with the forks that the items wouldn’t fall over. “On my free time, I mostly just stay in my quarters, as I’m still new to the ship and this is the first time I have actually met most of the people on it.” He added to his response.

Elizabeth listened to the chatter around her and smiled. She was glad to see the crew working together this easily. Most places it wasn’t so peaceful, with everyone pulling rank and trying to out do one another. She wondered how Baumann was getting along. The workout here was easing the tightness of the blossoming bruises. But she knew she’d end up with far more in the next few weeks before this was done. She still had workouts with the MACO that weren’t going to be as easy as the Academy. Which she was grateful for.

El navigated the pallet about through the other things littering the deck. It was getting better; earlier she couldn’t have done that with the volume of things littering the deck. She thought that a computer doing the translating was a bit of a cheat but then she simply didn’t know much about what was ‘out there’. “How many ..” she wrinkled her face some .. “aliens are out there? I met a Vulcan once.” By her tone she wasn’t impressed with that evidently. “Will you have to learn their languages?”

“I’m new too. I met my cabin mate Liz. She’s in science. I’ve seen a few people in the mess. Departments usually sit together from what I’ve seen so mostly I am getting to know them. My job is more hands on. I fix things. Make things. What do you do in your cabin?” In El’s short time there inside the small cabin there really wasn’t much one could do.
El, Eng

“There are a lot of different species, with their own language. I am trying to learn their languages, so I don’t have to rely on the universal translator. That is not easy. Most of the time, I read books that help me retain my knowledge of the languages I know, and some that help me learn new languages.” He told her. “Well, maybe one of these times, we can break out of the normal and sit together in the mess.” He said, as he thought, “The XO is the only other linguist on board, so even if he was in the mess at the same time, he’d be sitting with the command staff, and not with a junior grade linguist.”
LT Sanks, Linguist

“You could still talk shop with him,” El said, bringing the lift to a halt and tapping the release switch for the mag to power down. “I don’t see why he’d be such a snob to not want to talk to someone who had the same interest. You could talk, I don’t know, Vulcan to one another.” She scrunched up her nose. “How do you learn languages by reading about them? You should find out who on board speaks the languages you are learning or have and just talk to them. I’m sure there has to be a few on board. In the Academy I was at there were a number of people who tried to learn the language of possible adversaries. You might be a lower rank but you are still someone who has a useful skill.”
- El

“That’s true. Maybe you can teach me some of the languages you know, that I don’t yet.” Roger suggested. “I’ll look into what other languages people speak on the ship. That’s a good idea. With learning from the book, I try not to just know how to speak the language but write it as well, in case we ever get a mission that would require it, ya know, like for instance, after a war with the klingons, we need a peace treaty written in Klingon, so they understand the terms.” He tried to explain, but noticed that he was over explaining, which was a bad habit of his, so he stopped talking, nervously and continued working.
Lt. Sanks, Linguist.

“Do Klingons have a word for peace?” El asked. “Maybe you could make one.” She had heard little about them but what they had taught in a Xeno course at the military academy. They sounded like a people who preferred to brawl, drink and shout than anything else. Her nose curled up as she thought of that, then came back to the present. “The doc would likely know who speaks what. Seems like something she would know.” As she shifted two rectangular boxes by grabbing them by handles at the top and moving them aside out of the way she thought of his comment. She’d caught rather than was taught the languages. “I don’t know if I’d know where to even start on teaching anyone. The most Chinese I speak these days are curses.” She flashed a quick, guilty smile at him.

OOC: Room/time for one more?
-Atozi

OOC: Sure

IC:
He smiled back, “The word peace itself, no. Only way to basically get peace with them, is show you are an honorable adversary, worthy of not dying in battle from what I’ve learned.” He sorted some more boxes before adding, “That’s alright, I’m sure we can find a good starting point even with the curse words.” the LT. chuckled a little saying that.

“So the best defense is a good offense, is that how they think?” El knelt down to brush off the dust from the labeling from a small crate. It looked to be a kind of diagnostic unit for sickbay. While it said hand held and a quantity of one it felt like it was too heavy to be simply held. Perhaps it had a wand with it that was the hand portion. “Have you ever met a Klingon?” El asked. “I’ve seen a Vulcan on Earth and I hear there is an Andorian doctor on board, but I’ve not seen her yet.”
- El, Eng

“You can tick that off your list” Atozi said as she entered the room her blue antennae flicking around above her head as they gave her a censary reading of the room, though basic and rudimentary she relied on her eyes and ears. Infront of her were two other officers bot wearing starfleet uniforms like herself, something that Atozi was stil getting used to.

  • Ens Sh’qyrin

El stared. The contrasts in Atozi was hard for her to take in. Blue skin. Feather white hair. Tall. And the antennae. Were her eyes faceted El would have thought that Andorians were nearly insect like. She gawked for a moment then recovered, if poorly. “Hi,” she said. “Are all Andorians so tall?” For El, Atozi was tall. She wondered why they had antennae if they had eyes and ears and the like as well. It was perhaps not the best introduction but El wasn’t exactly a diplomat. “I’m El,” she said after a pause. “This is Roger. He’s good with languages.”

Ooc: aw man, wish i wasn’t off in the corner with naomi. Lol
- Miriam

OOC: You can have them walking back or leave her there? I kept forgetting this thread and didn’t know where to take their conversation. My apologies.
-Janice B.

“It’s all right. I’m just happy you’re doing better. You had me scared and I didn’t know what to do if you didn’t…” Naomi sighed, her breath inhaled to calm her concerns.

“If you want to, you could head back to the others. I can get the rest of this stuff and catch to you.” She suggested.

Despite wanting to spend time with him, she knew he likely wanted to get things and over with. Besides if they stick around in the corner too long, others were going to assume the worst. She snickered at the last comment that hinted to taking their time.

-ENS Naomi D. Locke, Sci.

Atozi looked between El and Roger and smiled, she wasn’t as rough around the edges as her brethren from having worked with Humans and other species for some time. “Hello El I am Atozi Sh’Qyrin.” He turned to Roger and then in Imperial Andorian greeted roger. “Sial’alachua” Her antennae continued to pick up on the environmental pressures and indicate that there were more people in the room.

  • Ens. Atozi Sh’qyrin.

El was at a loss. Not that the doctor greeted Roger in what was likely the Andorian dialect, but that of her name. Did she call her by her rank to be formal? As she turned to Roger El mouthed her name and found it in no small fashion a tongue twister. What did one call an Andorian in ‘short’? Atozi? Rin? Hey you? Doc? Perhaps that would come out in the conversation with Roger as he was more in the wise with other cultures. El just knew humans and what she knew of Vulcans gave her the sense that the went around with a rod rammed up their .. Sial’alachua .. was that a greeting or a sneeze?
