[SNIP]A short while later, Roger returned, walking over to Naomi with a curious look on his face. “Well, that was interesting…” He mused, looking over at Naomi. “It appears that Lieutenant Barr has had to leave us.” He paused, scratching his beard with one hand. “The Captain has appointed me as the new Chief Science Officer.” He looked around, then back at Naomi.
‘I wonder if you might give me assistance in monitoring the sensor data,” Roger said. “We need to get as much information about this nebula as possible. There is also a chance of some 21st century transports in the vicinity that we need to keep active scans for and do our best not to cause any disruptions in the region.” He smiled sheepishly.

Naomi looked up from her observation then spotted Roger enter. His expression indicated something was up. Her right eyebrow to arch in question and she patiently waited for him to explain. She crossed her arms over her chest when he revealed his infield promotion.
Unsure what to say, she blurted out the first thing that came to her memory.
“Better you than me. The last Captain to try and promote me, I asked if they were bloody crazy.” That statement wasn’t a joke especially since the man took offense to it.
She still hoped Roger would get a chuckle out of it. Her arms fell down to her sides as she nodded.
“Of course. Let’s hope nothing breaks down while we do this…” Naomi stated in a polite tone, her hand gestured for the new CSO to lead the way.

Roger smiled. “I have every confidence in your abilities and I would definitely appreciate your assistance. It’s a new experience for me, well I guess for us both, now that I’ll be working with you more closely now and not always been on the night shift.” He let out a laugh. “My body isn’t going to know what to think with the changes in my sleeping pattern that I’ve been doing lately.” He laughed, ending in a sigh.
“All right, lets head on to the science labs and we can monitor the data from there,” He said. He turned and made his way back out the door, looking back over his shoulder towards Naomi.
“So tell me,” He said as they walked. “What kinds of things have you been working on lately?” He had his own experiments and projects that he conducted during the late hours, but he didn’t usually look into the work of his colleagues. Lt Barr had given him a lot of free reign when it came to working on the night shift, and he hoped Naomi could give him some more insight as to how the department had been running during the normal hours when most people were on duty.

Naomi nodded as she slid in behind Roger. She kept an easy pace with him as she listened to him. The shift from day to night had been a hard one for her too. Even the old tip of heading to bed earlier didn’t appear to help.
“Try some Grey Earl tea. I find caffeine helps wake me up no matter what time.” She pointed out.
Roger smiled. “That does sound quite lovely. I will have to remember that.”
At the mention of her daily tasks she shrugged. “I mean, it’s not exciting. Mostly taking samples, analyzing them, then categorizing them in the correct places. Supply checks, restock, and order.”
She yawned a bit, her hand rose to cover her mouth and prevent rudeness.
“I mean, it’s literally routine. It’s pretty boring, but at least it’s safe. I really feel bad for anyone that goes on the away teams.”

Roger chuckled. “I haven’t had the opportunity to be on one myself.” He gave a shrug of his shoulders. “I guess now with my new position I’ll be getting that call more often.“
They reached the science lab, and Roger hit the button on the door panel and the doors slid open. “I apologize, Naomi, may I call you Naomi? I’m afraid I don’t know your area of study.”
-Roger Ferguson, CSO
“Well, considering we’ll be working together, I don’t mind. And I focus on xenology mainly, but I do branch out. Usually to other animal-related sciences like studies in ecosystems, micro studies, and more. I minored in Virology.” Naomi pointed out as she realized they arrived at the labs.
“Oh that’s wonderful!” Roger said cheerfully. “I majored in biology myself with a minor in zoology.”
She paused for a moment and glanced about. Her posture appeared to been waiting for something, but it never happened. Immediately she relaxed.
“This moment almost felt too peaceful. I’m waiting for something to come along and ruin it.” The woman admitted. Even when the missions had been months or longer apart, she still didn’t trust things to stay peaceful.

Roger chuckled. “I know that feeling.” He let out another softer chuckle. “I remember many a nights being here in the lab all alone, and I would hear a strange noise or something. I would feel like jumping out of my skin.” He smiled. “Come on, lets take a look at the sensor data and see what we might learn.”
-Roger Ferguson, CSO
“The lab at night makes my blood run cold. I make a point of avoiding the night shift if I can. Or at least, make someone else is also on duty.” Noami shuddered then continued to walk with Roger.
When he mentioned the sensor date, she nodded. After they arrived at the console, she slipped into the seat and began to pull up the information.
“Let’s see what we got.” Noami’s fingers clicked across the keys to access the data.
