After meeting his new Captain, Jonathan stopped by sickbay. The transport had finally left, but he still wanted to give the crew sometime to get his quarters cleaned up before he dropped in.

Stepping in he looked around. “Hello, Doctor? Are you in?”

Cmdr. McKnight - XO

“Aye!” A voice called from the other side of the room. Suddenly a sea of red shot up from the floor right next to the examination beds. Upon closer study, it was clear that this sea of red was actually a great amount of long disheveled red hair under which was a woman with a crooked grin and a pale complexion. She stood up, dusted off her uniform, and moved towards the man. She stopped a few paces away from him and reached out a hand, she was an unusually tall woman, standing about fifteen centimeters taller than he “I’m Doctor Rachel Grey, Ship’s physician” She wore the standard Starfleet uniform and a flowy white coat.

Dr. Grey - CMO

“Cmdr. McKnight, the new XO, nice to meet you Doctor,” Jonathan said taking her hand. “The Captain wanted me to stop by for a quick checkup, make sure everything was up to date, and in the system, just in case things go sideways during this upcoming mission.”

Cmdr. McKnight - XO

Rachel clapped her hands together “Well goodie” She took a few steps back “Please have a seat on one of the Examination beds, we’ll ge ye sorted and have this done in no time” She said in an extremely cheerful manner.

Dr. Grey - CMO

“Sure thing,” Jonathan said as he hopped up on the bed. “So how is everything around here Doctor? Anything I should be aware of? Need help with anything?”

Even though he was getting his exam done, there wasn’t any reason he couldn’t get to know the Doctor, and a bit about the ship.

Cmdr. McKnight - XO

Rachel grabbed a small device from her pocket and raised it against the Commander’s head, a small light appeared and it started a quiet hum “All is well, I managed to get some good supplies before we left for the mission, The kids and I should be prepared for whatever comes next. I got some nice animal byproducts with medicinal value from the quartermaster and I got some extra analgesics and other pain relievers, you’d be surprised how often I get crew in with mild headaches and similar ailments.”

Dr. Grey - CMO

Jonathan nodded. “I’m not surprised. I’ve spent enough time in space now that I’ve noticed that people do tend to take a bit to adapt to being out here. I’ve seen more then my fair of new recruits take a couple of months to get their space legs under them.

“And what sort of animal byproducts? Is it something that we need to be making sure that sickbay has any special equipment running at all times?”

Cmdr. McKnight - XO

Rachel shook her head “It’s not really standard Starfleet Medicinal practices, we’re still a few centuries behind most of the Alliance Species. I have some Andorian Technology from my time on Andor but most of the animal byproducts are based on the practices of Doctor Phlox’s work on Enterprise. I don’t have the required experience to keep the animals themselves but storing their product is not much too difficult, nothing beats the freshness though so I don’t know how viable it is in the long run. It’s mostly just dried droppings, gland secretions, and things of that kind. I try not to rely on medical technology that’s beyond me but I’ve studied their effectiveness.”

Dr. Grey - CMO

Jonathan nodded. “Seems like a fair approach to the practice of new medicines, making sure that you fully understand them before putting them to use. If they are really that much more effective, why are they not in wider use yet?”

Cmdr. McKnight - XO

Rachel laughed, or to be precise cackled at his question “Well most Starfleet Doctors wouldn’t have a clue what to do with them, for longer-lasting missions this wouldn’t be viable for novices but I have the added experience of having studied alien medicine. Besides, there are human equivalents for most of these, a wee less advanced in comparison but still effective. I wanted to do a basic test run for this mission to see if I can justify taking the time to study these creatures and keep them on board. It’d also be nice to have something to talk at.”

Jonathan nodded at that. He could totally understand wanting someone else to talk to besides actual people. There were times he would talk to the engines, and they responded in their own way.

Nothing came back on the scan that wasn’t already in his medical record. His left leg had been broken almost a year ago now, and there was some muscular scaring in his arms, where he had received electrical shocks over the years.

“Well as long as our standard techniques are still adequate, then it makes sense to take some more time testing the new practices. Do you think they’ll become widely accepted by the fleet, if they prove that much more effective?”

Cmdr. McKnight - XO

Rachel put the device in her pocket “Well these are techniques used by other species, frankly, the only problem is shipping the correct amount of specimens in a humane fashion. I don’t know if having a Zoo would be workable for every doctor but they are useful and more often than not replenishable, it could save resources until we find a way to replenish resources on longer missions.”

Dr. Grey - CMO

Jonathan nodded. “Resupply is always the biggest question on the longer duration missions. It becomes a question of just how much can a ship carry before it becomes to unwieldy. I could definitely see how having some sort of more renewable source for medicines would be beneficial on those types of missions. There is less of a risk of running out of something if you are going to be able to count on a constant supply.

“So, am I good to go Doctor? The Captain wants me to head down to engineering to check things out there.”

Cmdr. McKnight - XO

Rachel nodded, a little overly enthusiastic “Aye, yer as fit as a season at the end of a pogo stick” She clapped her hands together, try not to hit the door on yer way out, they build these doorways too low.” She said with her crooked grin.

Dr. Grey - CMO

Jonathan opened his mouth to ask what she had said, but decided against it. “Thanks Doctor,” he said as he headed for the door.

“I’ll see if I can get someone down here to take a look at the door for you, maybe speed it up,” he said with a grin before he headed off.
