NE Winston nearly jumped out of his skin when the console next to him squawked loudly. The plasma flow to the starboard nacelle had momentarily become unbalanced. It was almost like the engine had misfired, but the port engine had automatically compensated so there was no instability in the warp field.
“Whoa!” He exclaimed. “That can’t be good…”

Danora laughed coming around the corner. “No worries. It happens on occasion. Scared me on my first ship when it happened. Various and assorted reasons why. Run a level two diagnostic on the plasma flow conduits and the nacelle transfer valves. If they come up clean, then we’re good. Otherwise, guess what we’re doing this afternoon?” She laughed and patted his shoulder stepping to the other side of the console.

NE Winston relaxed visibly and smiled, more because it sounded like he wasn’t going to get stuck with the lame assignment this time.

“I’m Danora, by the way. Let’s see what we have here. Shall we?” She nodded to him and she started up the diagnostic sequence.

“Winston,” he replied.

She had an idea and tapped a query to the AI as well. -What was the reason for the plasma flow disruption in the starboard nacelle?- She hadn’t had a chance to play around with the AI so she wasn’t sure how it would respond. But it was worth a try.

If [Winston] hadn’t seen the blip, everyone on board soon felt it - the ship suddenly lurched with force overwhelming the inertial dampers. The black hole’s gravitational field had momentarily magnified by an order of magnitude, briefly pulling the Memorial off course and interrupting its warp field and knocking its warp drive offline.

NE Winston staggered but quickly recovered his balance. Warnings chimed urgently from stations all around engineering.
“I told you that didn’t look good,” he said sheepishly. It was going to be a very busy day…
