Jack nodded “Right. If I remember correctly that despite the lack of forensic and archeological evidence the genetic factors were apparent. I remember when they returned, it was during my second year on Earth. There was a big celebration in San Fransisco. It was surreal because it’s not often that ships disappear without a trace then return. Even though they had been communicating with Earth for years it was a really big day. There was a special class when I was at the Academy that went specifically through those years.” Jack reminisced.

“I read abut that when I was a young kid, Voy....Voyager. Yea… They were lost in the Delta Quadrant, but somehow made their way back home.” Fil said. “That was amazing! Talk about determination.”

“I never doubted for a minute that they’d make it back,” Wendell said. “It was a then state of the art ship. As a galactic phenomenologist, there were several avenues that they might have explored to expedite their return.”

CSO

“I like to know how did they get back?, Fil asked, “I mean the Delta Quadrant is thousands of light years away, how did they get back in a few years? I bet they had some exciting adventures, meeting aliens we never knew excisted. I read about the captain....Janeway, I think, when I was at the academy. How could they survive in such a hostile environment like that? I wonder if they made friends or worse, enemies. What do you think, sir?”

Jack chuckled “You should simply read the historic archives, there’s plenty of information, logs, and records from that time. I remember when they returned because there was a big panic around a Borg Transwarp conduit opening not far from Earth, people were worried it was another battle for Earth type thing which then turned into a big celebration. I think it was simply the right ship, fast and tough with the best computer capabilities. You know I really wanted to serve on an Intrepid Class when I graduated, despite the design being almost fifteen years old, perfect science vessel.”

“Yes sir, I’ll read the archives. It sounds interesting. But…what’s a Borg Transwarp, I never heard of them. “Fil said, wanting to learn more of this ‘Borg’ thing that was mentioned.

The Scottish doctor shrugged “You’d have to ask a Warp specialist, someone in Engineering should know. As I understand it, the Borg have the technology to open Transwarp tunnels that allow them to travel great distances in short amounts of time. My interest in Warp Field mechanics faded quickly, I never bothered learning beyond the basics.” He said non-chalantly.

” Maybe one of these days I will.” The Catullan said. “But in the mean time, I like to know why don’t we use Transwarp? Wouldn’t we get to places faster than ever?”

“I’m sure that it’s being researched,” Wendell said. “We’ve encountered other alien races that have had higher tech then us.”

CSO

“Couldn’t we come up with a trade of technology or something?” Fil wondered. “I mean if it helps both of us?”

“What can we do to promote a trade agreement between both of our worlds?” Fil continued.

Jack gave the ensign an odd look “You do realise we’re talking about a hypothetical scenario, it’s nigh impossible to decide what could be used to trade such advanced technology. The Federation has encountered a number of species with superior and inferior Technology, we don’t trade our advanced technology to those with inferior technology of good reasons and I think those more advanced than us have similar apprehensions about giving advanced tech to those who might not be ready for it. Good things come to those who wait.”

“Sometimes, the price for such a trade is too high,” Wendell said. “What if we came across a technically advanced species who lacked, say, a holodeck? What might we ask in return for that? This is where your academy courses in ethics come into play.”

CSO

“Of course–the Prime Directive.” Fil realized. “An advance civilization can not interfere with the normal development of any society” Fil quoted. “Thank you for reminding me of that, sir. I should have realized that from the start. Now I understand why the Prime Directive is in place.”

“I prefer to think if it as not contaminating other soceties who might not yet be ready for higher tech,” Wendell remarked.

“I understand, sir. Forgive me for not realizing that.” Fil said.

Jack almost snorted in his water “Seeking knowledge and admitting ignorance is nothing to apologize for. Part of the reason we’re all here in Starfleet is to improve ourselves and every little helps” He said with an amused grin.

“I understand, sir, ignorance makes people strive to better themselves.” Fil said.

“I was thinking about how bad it can be to give aliens who have much higher tech then we do, something that they might not have,” Wendell said. “Like, what do we ask for in exchange for our holodeck technology?”

“I wish I knew, maybe something like transwarp?” Fil said

“Well it depends, how responsible are people. Holographic technology can be quite dangerous in the wrong hands. I mean it’s not that common outside the Federation, at least not with the big powers in our quadrant. I suppose these are the questions that created the diplomatic corps.”

“I see how how that could be dangerous, if it falls into the wrong hands and one is not capable of using technology correctly.”

“Transwarp never really worked out all that well for us, did it?” Wendell said. “Now, interphase technology, that was the big ticket item of the day. Or we could use some better medical devices. Enhanced sensors!”

CSO

“And if we are not ready for this new technology, then who knows what could happen.”
