Tapping the stylus against her temple, somewhat glad she was incapable of hearing anything, she took a moment to ease her mind of the information she had gathered throughout the day. Only two evaluations remained until the list had been completed for day one, and nothing looked more satisfying than the end of it. Smiling to herself, she tapped her badge to contact the next of the officers.=^=Lissan to TeWhiti, care to get your pysch evaluation out of the way?=^=
Dr. Lissan
CNSIn his quarters Tane was busy talking to his mother and youngest brother and sister via the interspace tranceiver.
“Are you eating enough?” His mother was fussing, “You’ve lost weight. Is your job too stressful?”
“Did you know that the people of our world tried to blow it up,” Anahera the youngest of his two sisters said at almost the same time, he eye’s popping out with the disbelief, “Of course it wasn’t our ancestors but they had atomic bombs, and they would blow them up to show off how strong they were. Ow!” She exclaimed, Ben the second youngest child and Tane’s youngest brother having elbowed her. “Tane already know’s all that,” Ben said, “They go over it in the Acadamy, so we know how we have become better people today as a reminder of how bad the old times were. Aye?”Tane chuckled, “Ma I’m eating more than enough. Don’t you worry.” He fixed his gaze onto Ben, “What are you doing at home? Aren’t you still studying?”
“It’s the holiday’s bro!” Ben laughed “Thought I’d come back and-” he paused as Tane held up a hand, the counselors message just coming through his comm.=^=Lissan to TeWhiti, care to get your pysch evaluation out of the way?=^=
“A pysch evaluation? Why do you need a psych evaluation Boy?” Tane’s mother asked in concern, “Have you misbehaved. Your father and I have spoken to you enough times about not getting into trouble.”
“Relax Ma,” Tane said, “It’s routine when a new Counselor comes aboard a Starship. I’m not in trouble,” He tapped the badge attached to his shirt, =^= Always happy to meet a new face, sir. I’ll be there in 5 =^=
=^=No rush, Ensign. Take your time.=^=
“Duty call’s,” Tane said regretfully to his family, forgetting to close the comm link.
“You be good now you hear, I don’t want your Captain writing home about you not behaving yourself,” His mother lectured as if the Captain was a principal of a school and Tane an errant student.
“Bye Ma,” Tane said, closing off the transmission, as his brother and sister chorused their own goodbyes.Chuckling to himself, the big man stood up. A couple mintues later, the large man was stepping through the doors of the Counselors office.

ScienceLissan had spent the time between the Ensign’s departure from the comm to his arrival at her door reviewing his file. She never put true value to the file, unless it gave specific information that pinpointed a possible trigger for emotional distress in her patient. Otherwise, she believed wholeheartedly in the ethos of physical discussions. There was far more to be seen of a person when speaking to them first-hand. A certain authenticity was lost in the inscriptions of words typed flawlessly onto the page, an authenticity which could only be regained when experiencing the person for oneself.
Humming to herself, Zenobia rose her head at the precense of another mind. It was the only indication that TeWhiti had arrived, and judging by his stance, she assumed he had rung the chime. “Come in!” The deaf woman called out through a completely mechanical voice.
Dr. Lissan
CNSThe doors to her office opened and Tane walked through, “Welcome aboard,” he said, coming up short, and very nearly tripping, when he saw the Counselors unusal apperance. Somehow he managed to get his feet back under him, he approached the Counselor his hand out for her to shake. His features - although friendly - held a fair amount of confusion to them. He was doubtlessly wondering how the Counselor could have heard him over the comm lines if she didn’t have any ears.
Ens. TeWhiti
ScienceHis confusion did not go unnoticed by the counselor, but her smile did not waver. Rising to her feet, she took his hand and shook it. “Thank you, Ensign. It is a pleasure to be here, really.” Allowing her hand to fall, she gestured to the replicator. “Would you like anything to drink?” She inquired, tilting her head to one side. For a second she observed the man, although she had nothing in particular that she was searching for. “You know, if you have any questions, before we begin, don’t be afraid to ask.” She opened the avenue for whatever was causing his confusion.
Dr. Lissan
CNS“Uhhhhhhh,” Tane blinked, “Ma’am are you awear you’ve uh,” he scratched the back of his head “missplaced your ears?” He made some vague hand guestures as if he was trying to sign what he was saying but couldn’t rememeber how. “How are you able to understand me?”
“Really? I must have misplaced them on my way to the Memorial! It would explain a lot, you know.” The counselor smiled wryly, shaking her head in amusement. “Ear agenesis, Ensign. I’m half Aenar, thus I have telepathic abilities which allow me to understand what you’re saying. The transmitter,” She gestured to the choker on her neck, which appeared just as a slim piece of metallic jewelry. “Changes my thoughts into words, and amplifies my ability to understand your speech center, so I know the difference between what you’re saying and what you’re thinking. Although, it is still a relatively new technology, so.. there may be some errors. With which I apologise.”
Beginning to get over himself slightly he flicked a cheerful smile, “Would it be inappropriate to ask the Counselor for a beer?” He winked letting her know he was joking although if the Counselor was to take him up on it he would hardly refuse…
Ens. TeWhiti
Science“I wish I could. Maybe another time, Ensign. How about say.. something without an ethanol content?” She grinned, standing beside the replicator.
Dr. Lissan
CNS“In that case I’ll have a coconut water please Ma’am,” Tane said politely, slightly disappointed but not surprised there would be no beer in the near future for him. Although there was nothing nicer than a good cool beer.
Ens. TeWhiti
Science“Call me Lissan or Doc, I don’t care– just not ma’am. I’m not that old.. yet.” She grinned, replicating a coconut water and a pomegranate tea. Setting his down before him, she seated herself across from him. “So, you’re a scientist it seems. Anything in particular drive you that way?”
Dr. Lissan
CNS“Thank you Lissan,” Tane grinned as she placed his coconut water in front of him. “Curiosity is probably my main reason for becoming a scientist. Curiosity and Exploration,” he nodded to himself, “Science is everywhere and it makes up everything, I guess I just want a better understanding of the universe I live in. Why be a Counselor?” he threw her question back playfully, “One could argue that it’s a form of Science, so why not be a scientist as well?”

“Didn’t curosity kill that poor cat?” Lissan teased, situating herself across from TeWhiti. “Ah, touche. Psychiatry is definitely a form of science. Unfortunately, most people would be unsettled by a pscyhiatrist who dabbled in the art of dissecting animals or chemical reactions– outside of the brain, of course.” She laughed, which was among the few vocal sounds she could make. “But this is about you, TeWhiti, not me. So, why Starfleet and not a scientific union of some sort? One could say that you would be just as capable of exploration with a union as you would with Starfleet.“
Dr. Lissan
CNS“Hasn’t killed me yet,” Tane winked cheekily. “A counselor that was known for experimentation wouldn’t excatly be the kind of counselor I’d want to go to, but stranger things have happened.” He leaned back and took a large mouthful of his coconut water, “I hate bureaucracies or politics or anything of the like. It’s tedious and childish. Then throw in a bunch of pretentious scientists that want to be better than everyone they’ve ever met, and put them in charge of an organisation. That’s a Scientific union a bunch of childern squabbling over who’s going to impress mummy and daddy.” He leaned back on in the chair, laying his left foot on his right knee, and making himself appear utterly comfortable. “At least Starfleet has a course for those kinds of people, so the rest of the crazy scientists can get on and do some actual work. Besides there’s bonuses, I got to work with my sister for a couple of months.”

“Of that, I’ve little doubt.” The Counselor mused. An experimenting psychiatrist was scary, but it wasn’t the most concerning of people she, nor anyone else, had been exposed to in Starfleet. At his confession, Lissan could not help but be defeated by the minute smile beginning to tug at the corners of his lips. “Fair enough,” She remarked, keeping a neutral stance. “Where did you and your sister serve?” Zenobia was curious to the dynamic of his family, knowing a strong support system often led to a fine officer, whether it be people or mindset behind them.
Dr. Lissan
CNS“On the U.S.S Trident,” he shook his head and chuckled, “Typical little sister right? Following me to all corners of the galaxy. She told me it was cause she wanted to keep an eye on me so I didn’t get into trouble, but I know that’s not true. She’s been following me around since she could walk.” He took another swig of the coconut water. Now that he was talking about his family, he was even more relaxed than before. “Some days I almost expect Ma to somehow infultrate Starfleet just so she can make sure I eat my greens at dinner. Though she’s probably too busy with Kauri to worry about me, he’s got little one’s you see; and Anahera - she’s my sister, she’s still in highschool and Ma wouldn’t leave her. She’s the baby so Ma dotes on her more than she ever did with the rest of us.” He was grinning with a touch of pride. He also doted on Anahera, they all did.
Ens. TeWhiti
Science“Anahera? What a beautiful name,” A flicker of a smile invaded her warm features, Lissan leaning forwards to rest her forearms upon the desk, her fingers interwoven with each other. TeWhiti seemed close to his younger siblings, specifically Anahera. The way his eyes lit up with pride, his expression morphing into one of adoration for his little sister.. it was all quite a wonder to Zenobia, who had always been the younger sibling. “What’s your favourite memory with Anahera?“
Dr. Lissan
CNS“Her name means angel,” Tane said as he thought back “Probably when I took her to my senior ball. She was 7 and obsessed with princesses at the time, and that was the theme of the ball, so when my partner couldn’t make it I asked Ma and Pa if I could take her with me instead. I think it was the most excited I had ever seen her…
10 Years Ago
“Tane! Tane! Look,” Anahera waved excitedly pointing at the teenage couple in front of them, “It’s Cinderella and Charming and there’s Mulan, and there’s Elsa”
She squealed as she was swept off her feet. “Papa no! I’m a princess, you can’t pick me up!”“Are you sure you are going to be alright?” Ma asked pulling Tane to the side, “We’ll only be gone for an hour do you think you’ll be able to manage.”
“Ma there’s going to be teachers watching, nothing’s going to happen,” 17 year old Tane glanced over at his little sister, “She’s going to have so much fun,”
“I know,” Ma smiled softly, “You’re a good boy, not many brothers would do something like this for their sisters. I love your older brother, but Lord so help me, that boy doesn’t know whanau if it slapped him in the face with a fish,”
“Tane! Tane!” Anahera interrupted, “Can we go in now please pretty please!!!”
Tane glanced at his mother who gave him the silent nod. He bowed low before his sister holding out his arm to her, “May I escort you too this dance my princess,” he asked, putting on a formal accent.
Giggling, she slipped her arm through his and attempted to look dignified as she walked, placing each step carefully and thoughtfully in it’s place. Tane tried not to chuckle watching her looking so serious in her Princess Anna outfit (a play on her name) and fake heels. As they made their way to the pavillion to be announced they joined with a bunch of Tane’s friends, who all kindly talked with the small princess and flattered her. He was sure to endure some teasing on Monday at school, but looking at Anahera beaming around, it was the last thought from his mind…
Present
”…the school even put on one of her favourite songs for us to waltz to. She stood on my toes and I danced her around. She pretty much stole the show. By the time Ma and Pa came to collect her she was tired that she almost toppled over trying to curtsey goodnight to me.” Tane’s chest rumbled as he chuckled, “All she talked about for the next month was that ball, I nearly regretted taking her cause she wanted to reinact it so often.”
“I’m sure she dazzled the room with her beauty and eloquence,” Lissan smirked, a whimsical thought of the evening’s magic crossing her mind to the soft melody of ‘Once Upon a Dream.’ (It was of the few Disney songs she knew.) “And you, being the brother you are, had no problem reinacting that night?” Gentle razz filled her expression, despite the monotony of her tone.
“It will be her senior ball at the end of the year,” Tane shook his head, “I’m hoping I can get some leave so I can escort her to it dressed as Hans,” he winked mischeviously.

“If you catch the Captain soon enough, she probably won’t mind giving you the chance to ‘escort’ your sister to her ball, and by the sound of it, paint her cheeks red in the process.” She chuckled.
“I hope to,” Tane’s eyes sparkled mischeviously as imagined what his sisters reaction would be like. “It would be a good oppertunity to see everyone again.” He added wistfully afterwards.
“When was the last time you visited your family?” Although curious, she posed the question slowly, knowing well its gravity.

OOC: Hope you don’t mind me returning to this thread. I was really enjoying it before I went LOA.
IC: “A couple of years ago,” Tane tilted his head to think back, “Last time I saw the whole whanau (family) was when my sister graduated the Acadamy and that was two years ago. When I first graduated I tried to get back at least once a year for Christmas or a graduation, but when you’re out in space it’s not always possible. We’ve had to make do with transmissions every night that we can.” He forced a laugh, that didn’t sound quite as harty as his usually did. Being apart from his family was still one of the hardest aspects of being a Starfleet Officer, despite having been and Officer for nearly 6 years. The occassional bounts of homesickness he still felt when it was a family members birthday was managable, but still difficult.
