Tane leaned back in his seat in his quarters, bored. He’d tried contacting his sister, Aroha, but she hadn’t responded so she was probably busy. His older brother, Kauri had responded, but his duties as a father had called him away sooner than Tane would have liked. Now Tane wasn’t sure what to do. He wasn’t much in the mood for working, nore was he in the mood to just sit around. He flopped back onto the chair behind him, only to miss the chair and half slide onto the ground instead. He really needed to get out.

Like a light the idea hit him. Penji and him hadn’t had the chance to hang out outside of shift while they both got settled onto the ship. They were well overdue to hang out again, and Tane was eager to hear the other Ensigns thoughts on the ship and it’s crew now that he’d had the chance to experience it. He jumped up, stumbling into the chair he’d missed, and hit his comm badge =^= Ensign TeWhiti to Ensign Fil: Are you free? If you are you should meet me at the Holodeck in 10 minutes. =^=

Moving quickly he hummed quietly to himself as he made the journey to the holodecks. Hopefully his friend (and a holodeck suit) would be free, maybe there would even be other people from the ship hanging around to socialze with, even if Penji wasn’t free.

Penji entered the holodeck and met up with Tane, his friend. “Ready for a work out?” Fil said to Tane.

“A work out?” Tane let out a booming laugh that echoed through the walls of the holodeck, “You sound like my brother Ben.” He gave a friendly clap on Penji’s shoulder, “I never work out if I can help it,” he chuckled, “It’s why I’m a scientist and not a security officer. But if that’s the program you want to do than I’ll give it ago. But you can’t expect much,” he joked, although he knew, that unless Fil was a major body builder that Tane would be able to keep up with his friend just fine.

“So what do you want to do first Tane? we could create a laboratory and test our brains, or excercize in a gym.” Fil said as he went to program the controls.

Tane shrugged, “Testing our brains could be fun, maybe a bit of experimentation,” he grinned, mischevious, “How many chemicals do you reckon we can throw into one mix before the mix explodes?”

“let’s try 10, but we must be careful.” Fil said.

“Alright,” Tane nodded, it would depend on the chemicals but that was alright it would be fun. =^= Computer: Ensure Safeties are on =^= Tane said. =^= Safeties are enabled =^-= came the automatic response from the computer. “There,” Tane grinned, as the room shifted and changed around them. “We should be safe now. Did you want to set it up?”

“OK, We have 10 vials, we take 2 and identify them, then we mix it together.” Fil said as he took 2 random vials.

“Alright!” Tane whistled merrily to himself, as he selected his own random vials and pouring a couple of drops of each onto seprate pieces of litnus paper watching as the sheets turned from red to blue. “Well I guess that answers that question,” Tane said, hunting around his bench for a tricorder.

“Don’t worry Tane, this should be easy for you. As a scientist we should be able to identify these chemicles. Let’s continue.” Penji said as he got 2 more vials ready.

Tane laughed, “Oh I’m not worried about that, one’s terran bleach, it smells like it anyway. The other one…” he sniffed, and picked up the vial swirling it around. Then took a sip. Almost instantly as he swallowed his nose scrunched up and he made a sour face. “Sea water,” he said, placing the vial with another one. “What have you got Penji?”
He asked as he prepared his next two vials.

” As Penji took the first vial, he said, “Whoa! I think this one is Klingon Blood Wine. This other one is Felicium. MMMMMM....tastes good. OK, your turn.”

Tane smirked as he pushed one over, “Ammonium,” he guestured to the vial with the silvery substance inside “And…” he scanned the second vial with the tricorder he had managed to find, “Pyladium,” he shuddered. “Alright, what have you got?”

“OK, I got Berylite and, oh, this is a good one, Graveolens! Top That Tane.” A little gleam in Penji’s eye as he said that.

Tane gave a hearty chuckle. “Citric acid,” he identified, “Oh man that’s boring,” He moved onto the next one “Dilithium,” He said instantly without testing it. Recognising it from it’s texture and colour immediately.

“OK, here’s a good one, cytoplasma and ultritium. See if you can top that, Tane! This should be hard for you.”

“Cytopasma,” Tane walked over to Penji’s station and peered at the vial, “How did you figure that one out?”

“Oh, You’d be surprised with what I know. I worked with it before I came aboard the Memorial.” Fil said with a smile.

“Really doing what?” Tane asked, genuinely curious to learn more about his friend.

“I found some biochemical compounds in plant cells. Of course, I worked with other scientists. Then I wondered if these same compounds were in other beings. I wanted to work with those compounds with alien species.” Fil said as he looked for 2 more chemicals. “So, after a few months of studying this, I decided to specialize in Xeno -biology. Shortly there after, I got transferred to this ship, and continued with my studies.” Penji then asked Tane, “What about you?”

IC: Tane nodded walking back to his bench and testing his next two substances as he listened. “Xeno-biology is a good field to go into. I dabble in it, by I’m a bit of a chemist myself. I like to make things go boom,” He joked, “On my last ship, we studied a few Ecosystems on some planets, researching ways to alter the Ecosystems for terra-forming with the least adverse effects to the enviroment as possible.

He peered at the results from his latest substance. “Druanium and…” the other Ensign rubbed his hands together excitedly. “Nitroglycerine, now we can have some fun.”

“Somehow I knew you would find Nitroglycerine somewhere, should I call security?” Fil said with a laugh. “OK, I got something for you, a diburnium-osmium alloy. Let me think, Oh here’s one, Spith Basil. See if you can beat that, Tane.”

IC: “No we don’t need Security,” Tane glanced at the explosive vial and shrugged, “It’s only holographic and the safeties are on. But we still won’t want to knock it over, it’ll make an impressive boom.” He placed the vial carefully to the side, “Diburnium-osmium alloy maybe we can use that as a sheild if the Nitroglycerine goes off.” He joked scanning his next two substances. Both poweders. “Potassium Nitrate and Sulpher,”

“Whoa, that sulphur smells! Well, anyway I got one for you. A Postcellular Compound, and Gyrus.” Fil sounded a little devious about the chemicals he found.

“It does,” Tane agreed holding his nose, while he fumbled around one of the labs cupboards for a lid he could put on the sulpher.

“There’s no way you can guess this next set of chemicals.” Fil said.
