Tane’s quaters
The alarm Tane had forgotten that he had set bleared suddenly through the computer making the Ensign startle and knock the framed photograph he was hanging to the floor. Cursing quietly to himself as he helplessly watched the frame shatter. =^= You have an appointment in Sickbay in 10 minutes =^= the computer informed him over the loud tone. “Yes. Yes. Acknowledged,” Tane said in a rush, “Just shut the noise off!” he ordered, dropping to his knees and hurridly collecting the shards of broken glass up in his bare hands.

The photograph - a picture of Tane and a younger woman, with similar brown skin and hair to Tane, but where her eyes were brown, Tane’s own ones were a murky green. Both the occupants were wearing the blue Starfleet uniform and standing in front of what was clearly the Acadamy, the young woman proudly holding up an Ensign pip. It was one of Tane’s favourite photographs from his younger sister Aroha’s graduation, but now the smiling faces of him and his sister only seemed to mock him as he reached picked up the bits of broken glass that had once protected the photo. “Laugh all you like,” he muttered glaring at the photo, not paying attention to his task until he grabed a shard the wrong way, cutting his hand. “Ow!” he exclaimed, withdrawing his hand and turning it over to observe the damage.

His palm was bleeding for sure, in the way that hand wounds typically did. “I guess it’s a good thing I’m supposed to be off to sickbay now,” he said to himself with a jovial chuckle. Disposing of the shards he had gathered already, he then grabbed a small towel to stem the bleeding and left. He didn’t bother to get changed out of his casual clothes, not wanting to stain his uniform.

Sickbay

A couple of mintes later, Ensign Tewhiti strolled into Sickbay, his hand was well wrapped in the towel. Spying a seemingly unoccupied doctor, he beelined towards them, “Kia ora, I’m Ensign Tewhiti, I had an appointment for my boarding physical,” he introduced, “Who would be in charge of that?”

Scientist

“Well, that might be me.” Said a tall Blond man in a white coat standing in the middle of the bay. “Please come have a seat” He indicated to one of the outer Biobeds “I’m Doctor Jack Alexander Grey, I’m the Chief Medical Officer on the Memorial, I’ll be conducting your physical today.”

Dr. Grey - CMO

Following the doctors direction Tane hopped up onto the biobed the Doctor had pointed at, “Nice to meet ya Doc,” he said cheerful.

“Likewise, Ensign,” Jack said rather formally. He grabbed his tricorder and started waving the scanner methodically across the Mans’ torso “Is there anything of note regarding yer medical history that I need to be aware of?”

Tane shrugged, “Not unless you count a few bruises and broken bones.” He’d completely forgotten about the cut hand he still had bandaged in the towel.

Jack quietly read the results of the scan, lowered the tricorder and gently placed his hand on the Ensigns, turning it around “This will probably sting” He said as he removed the cloth with less than gentle means “How did you do this” The doctor scanned the wound clinically with his eyes then grabbed a cloth with his right hand and started cleaning of the excess blood to get a better look at the wound itself.

Tane barely flinched, “This little thing,” he said, despite the fact it was still bleeding, “Just on a piece of glass, I knocked over a photograph and it’s cover shattered. I cut it as I was picking up the pieces from the floor.” The piece of glass must have been relatively large as the wound stretched from the base of his thumb to the middle of his palm, and wasn’t exactly shallow.

After Jack finished cleaning the blood and had examined the hand carefully he grabbed a dermal regenerator and started going over the wound, repairing the arteries first to stem the bleeding, cleaning the remaining blood away methodically “Well I advise avoiding breaking yer property in the future Ensign, doesn’t bode well fer a scientist ta be clumsy with ‘is hands.” The Doctor said dryly.

Dr. Grey - CMO

“Better a scientist than a doctor thats clumsy with his hands,” Tane grinned, “Thank goodness my clumsiness doesn’t run in the family. My sisters a doctor herself,” he explained, a touch of pride for her shining in his eyes as he watched the doctor begin to regenerate his hand.

Jack chuckled dryly “Trust me lad, I’ve worked as a Scientist in the fleet as well as a doctor, steady hands will serve ye well in both professions,” He said as he finished closing up the major injuries and started repairing the skin “Where does she practise?” He asked, more courteously than curiously.

Dr. Grey -CMO

“Starbase Magellan,” Tane beamed, “Which is probably fortunate for me since it’s never any good to stay with the same doctor for too long,” The big man winked in a friendly manner, “And she’s been my doctor since she first got the notion to be one. And I’ve given her plenty of practice over the years.”

Jack raised an eyebrow “Magellan? My Cousin used to be XO there a while back, pretty far away” He said in a more interested tone than before as he finished closing the wound and repairing scar tissue “Havin’ family way across there, in no-mans-land can be quite hard.” He looked up at him for the first time for several minutes “I don’t have siblings but my closest cousin is stationed on the Athena and that feels pretty far away, how do you handle bein’ so far away from family?” he asked earnestly.

Dr. Grey - CMO

“Well there’s six of us, so you’re more than welcome to borrow one if you want an extra family member,” Tane jested, “But yeah, it gets hard. I really struggled in my first year at the Acadamy being so far from home and all. We have our ways of coping, my family always make sure they call me at least once a week. My older brother Kauri always sends holophotos of his baby. It took time but I realised that my whanau (family) is always with me where ever I go,”

“The Athena is a great ship though, you must be proud of your cousin,”

Jack finished closing up the wound and after taking a moment to admire his handiwork he put the Dermal regenerator down and gave the hand a once over with his medical scanner, making sure he hadn’t missed anything. “Yes I suppose I am, he’s the reason I decided to go full on into Medicine.” Jack said with a half smile, apparently pleased with his work “Well Ensign, with this I’m comfortable declaring you to be of full health. Try not ta break any more glass and cut yerself, alright?”
