The staff looked at the Betazoid and one even opened his mouth to answer but quickly shut it and smiled slightly “More often than not right behind you” The Accent was Earth, Southern Scottish. The accents owner walked past the new doctor without so much as a look, deeply engaged in a PaDD “This way” He said bluntly as he walked towards a Computer Panel “Yer my new Doctor are ye not, Daniel Locke?” He asked incorrectly.

Taniel’s dark eyes surveyed the silent folk of Sickbay, wondering what he had said wrong, before the voice behind him caught his attention.
The Betazoid turned to face a clean-shave, well kept man bearing the pips of a junior grade lieutentant. The complete mis-pronunciation of his name threw him a little. “Actually, it’s Taniel Lox, sir.” He obediently followed the CMO as he made his way over to the computer panel.
“Ah, apologies,” Jack said with an apologetic smile, looking up at the Betazoid for the first time.
His exit report from his previous Chief Medical Officer on the Asclepius had already been transmitted as per protocol. It read:
Professional Report:
Commander Mark Adrian, Chief Medical Officer, USS Asclepius. It is both with relief and sadness that I write an exit report for Taniel Lox. Though a talented practitioner in many fields, he could also be somewhat flippant, arrogant and frustrating. His fine work in emergency care and general practice made up for his poor work in more mundane matters of medicine, but only just - he must not be allowed to avoid the work he does not enjoy, for this will cause his knowledge and skill as a general practitioner to suffer.
To work alongside, Doctor Lox can be a lot of fun; he is eager to make those around him laugh, and he seems to genuinely care if people like him. He is bold and flirtatious, which has its place (though once or twice I had to remind him about appropriate behaviour in my Sickbay), and he can also be a blessing in high pressure, fast moving situations. His calmness in the face of difficult circumstances is definitely something he has in his favour.
The biggest obstacle this young man will face in his coming career is his difficulty in coming to terms with his condition. One might assume that a medical professional would be better to equipped in dealing with a chronic impairment and that it might even affect that professional less, but not in Doctor Lox’s case. His undeveloped paracortex and low levels of psilosynine (and thus his lack of telepathic and most of his empathic ability) has had a great effect on his social development, and members of my staff soon found that it was best not to mention it at all.
In all, I believe we have in Taniel Lox the makings of a truly great doctor, provided he can spend more time refining his craft than than showing off with it.
- CMDR Adrian.
Taniel stood to attention while he waited, he didn’t want to make any mistakes and wasn’t sure how this Chief used rank or position when dealing with his subordinates. “It’s a bit of a dream to be serving aboard a ship like this, sir.” He remarked, as a pleasantry, while his dark eyes followed an attractive male Trill passing. He quickly looked back; he didn’t want to be called out for inappropriate behaviour on his first meeting with his boss. “I’m really looking forward to getting in the mix.”
Ensign Lox
DoctorJack sat down in a swivel chair in the middle of Sickbay instead of his office, offering the young doctor to do the same “Well sure, you say that now” He said drily but not entirely without humour “Please stand down, or well preferably sit down.” He crossed his legs and studied the Mans face carefully “Why medicine?” He asked simply.
Dr. Grey - CMO
Taniel gave a small smile at the joke, and took a seat. “Thank you,” he said.
The question had been asked before, of course, from his parents, his university professors, and at the Academy. The truthful answer was simple enough: he had been born disabled, and figured he would try to become a doctor so he might one day find a ‘cure’ for his problem. But only a few people knew that; Taniel was not in the habit of being entirely honest with himself.
“Well, sir, I like the pace, and the surprises. You never know who is going to walk into Sickbay and what they need. It’s exciting to come across something you’ve never seen before, and especially working in emergency medicine; you deal with everything from someone with a bruised elbow to a missing limb …” He gave a smile. “Not that I enjoy seeing people suffer, of course. I like making people feel better; it’s a good feeling when you know you’ve helped someone.”
The young Betazoid sat in Sickbay and he would glance around while he and the Chief spoke; it seemed like a busy, well run place. It didn’t look like somewhere he would ever find himself bored. “And choosing to join Starfleet was easy; where better to find a challenge than on ships filled with all sorts of different races, all with their own individual physical needs. Keeps a person on his toes, sir.”
“Have you been running this place long, sir?” He enquired.
Ensign Taniel Lox
DoctorJack cocked his head as he contemplated his answer, comparing it with what he knew about the Ensign. He paused for a moment at his question, although he made no outward signs it was clear that the question came as a slight surprise to him “No. I have only been head of this department for a few weeks. There’s been some influx of new crew recently. It’s been quite hectic before our first mission.” He looked at his PaDD for a moment “Describe in your own words your strengths and weakneses regarding your skills as a Doctor.”

Taniel thought back over his time as a medical cadet and then his stint on the Asclepius … there were certainly some good and bad points there!
“Well, professionally speaking, I have my M.D in General Practice; I’ve always wanted to work as a general practitioner rather than specialising and keeping to one field of medicine, but I admit I do have my favourites. I did best in neurology, cardio-vascular medicine, infection and immunity, plus I was commended on my knowledge of pharmacology. I have a degree in Applied Xenobiology, which I want to follow up on. Makes sense when dealing with so many different species. I’m hoping this posting will help me along with that.” He smiled.
“As for my weaknesses?” He gave a smile. “Does being so handsome I sometimes distract the nursing staff, sir?” He gave the flippant response, not really wanting to start talking about his ‘behavioural problems’ he had had to overcome in the past; there were a few black marks on his record from his days as a cadet, and one from the Asclepius where he had been relieved of duty.
The report read:
‘During a routine assessment, there was a verbal altercation between Ensign Lox and Lieutenant Jase Benk, a fellow Betazoid. Ensign Lox became verbally abusive towards Lieutenant Benk to the point of disruption of the whole of Sickbay. He was reprimanded and referred back to the Assistant Ship’s Counsellor, from whom he was already receiving treatment for anger management issues. He was given a written reprimand and returned to work after eleven days. Ensign Lox offered no explanation for his outburst, but did apologise. I consider the matter closed on my part, although he continues to counselling.’
- Cmdr Adrian
Taniel knew that Doctor Grey would probably see this on his report, but he wasn’t about to open that can of his own volition. “I intend to make you proud, sir.” He finished.
