As the Excalibur fired on the Manhatten, various power relays exploded across the ship. In engineering, the damage reports started to come in across all systems. The computer did its best to prioritise the various reports, refining it down to two options:
There was an imbalance in the antimatter injectors that, if left unchecked, could result in the warp core safeties cutting warp power.
The shield grid over the dorsal section of the ship was fluctuating asa result of three shield arrays that were operating at reduced power.

The Chief Engineer looked at the diagnostics. “Let’s focus on the warp core safeties; the last thing we need is to lose power in this fire fight.”

Suddenly, a torpedo from the Excalibur hit the Memorial directly on the secondary hull, causing EPS conduits across multiple decks explode. Several of the ones in Main Engineering ruptured, causing plasma fires to spew out of the fissures. Unfortunately the Chief Engineer was caught directly in one of the plasma discharges. Screaming in agony, she dropped to the ground, before going limp and lifeless; the smell of burning flesh filled the compartment.

The impact rocked the deck beneath his boots like a sledgehammer. Consoles blew apart in showers of sparks. The lights flickered. And then—screaming.
Vektul turned just in time to see the Chief Engineer engulfed in a wash of plasma. Her body arced back, caught mid-motion like a rag doll, before crashing to the deck in a lifeless heap. The stench of scorched flesh filled the compartment, thick and unmistakable.
He froze for half a second. Not in horror—but in recognition.
He’d seen the sudden collapse of command before.
On warbirds. On the edges of the Empire.
But there, it was quiet. A disruptor blast. A blade in the dark.
Here, it was violence without intent—pure entropy. He forced the thought away. Now wasn’t the time.
=^=Medical team to Main Engineering—now!=^= he snapped, already vaulting over debris toward the master systems console.
The warp core loomed ahead, its pulse erratic and unstable. The computer flooded the room with alerts—one rising above the rest.
Antimatter injectors imbalanced. Safety cutoff imminent.
He didn’t hesitate. He was the ranking officer now.
“Shut down injectors one through four. Reroute plasma flow through secondary manifolds,” he barked, his fingers flying across the interface. “Ensign Vorec—bypass EPS nodes twelve through sixteen and initiate auto-fire suppression protocols. And someone get that fire on the starboard wall out!”
Nearby, NE Vorec, a stocky Bolian, snapped into action. “Aye, sir!” he said, his hands already dancing across his console. “Plasma reroute in progress.”
NE Rehn, a human petty officer, grabbed an emergency extinguisher and sprinted to the blaze, bracing herself against the flickering heat. “On it, sir!” The hiss of suppressant foam filled the air as she fought the fire with practiced precision.
Another console detonated nearby in a plume of smoke and sparks. He didn’t even flinch.
“Containment field is stable, but barely,” he muttered. “If we lose warp power mid-fight, we’re just target practice.”
He tapped his combadge.
=^= Bridge, this is Major Vektul in Engineering. Chief Engineer is down. I’m assuming control. Warp core integrity compromised but holding. We’re rerouting injectors and prioritizing core stability. Dorsal shield grid is unstable—recommend evasive maneuvers to minimize stress. =^=
He ended the call and turned to the stunned crew still standing around the body.
=^=Acknowledged, Major. That’s what we’ve been doing up here. Do whatever you can to keep us running.=^=
“We do this right, or we all join her on the deck. Focus on the warp core. Shield repairs come after.”
His voice was steady. He’d seen the worst. Lived through it. But still…
He hadn’t expected his first command on a Starfleet ship to come like this.
Not exactly like this.In the Empire, command changed hands with blade or poison.
Here, it came in fire and flame—just as merciless. The warp core flickered again, casting harsh blue light across his face. He tightened his jaw.
“This ship doesn’t die today.”
