The low hum of the ship’s systems was a constant companion aboard the vessel, a backdrop of mechanical rhythm that only those stationed long-term could learn to ignore. It was almost soothing for Petty Officer Lola Logan—a signal that everything was still running as it should. But even the most dedicated sailors needed a pause, and her break had finally arrived. With a sigh of relief and a swipe of her sleeve across a smudge on her cheek, she unfastened her gloves and tucked them into her belt as she stepped out of the maintenance corridor.

Lola made her way through the narrow halls of the ship, nodding politely to a few passing crew members. The faint scent of engine grease still clung to her uniform, a badge of pride she wore without complaint. She’d spent the morning doing diagnostics on a temperamental air filtration unit—again—and though it wasn’t glamorous work, she took pride in keeping the ship running smoothly.

As she entered the mess hall, the atmosphere shifted. The buzz of conversation, the clatter of trays, and the occasional burst of laughter replaced the mechanical drone of the ship’s innards. It was warm in here—alive. A long queue snaked near the serving station, and the scent of something halfway decent filled the air. Today’s menu seemed to feature synthetic meatloaf and rehydrated mashed potatoes. Not gourmet, but better than powdered rations.

Lola grabbed a tray and took her place in line, finally letting her shoulders relax. It was in these brief interludes—between the grind of duty and the silence of her bunk—that she found a semblance of peace. She scanned the tables, spotting a few familiar faces from Engineering and Ops, most of them looking just as worn as she felt. This was the heart of ship life: routine, camaraderie, and brief moments of human connection.

Finding an open seat near the back, Lola sat down with her tray, offering a small smile to the sailor across from her. She didn’t speak right away, just enjoyed the first warm bite and let the tension drain from her body. In these moments, the weight of rank, responsibility, and the ship’s endless demands faded, replaced by simple comforts—a hot meal, a steady chair, and a moment of rest before the next alarm blared or another system demanded her attention.

Breaks didn’t last forever, but for now, she had this. And that was enough.

OOC: Who is Lola waiting for to post?

D…

OOC: Anyone and everyone. She’s just a Petty Officer has nothing to do at the moment.
