A lone shuttlecraft carrying Captain Cain Nighroad and his trusted companion Boomer moved through the vastness of space on an urgent assignment from Starfleet Command. The Fleet Commander from this sector, Vice Admiral Johnson, had sent him to the last known location of the USS Memorial. Starfleet had lost all communications with the ship and there was not another vessel anywhere close to its location to inspect.

Cain looked down at Boomer and said, “Well pal, here we are out in the wild of space looking for a ship that has stopped responding to the brass.” Boomer looked up at Cain with his ears standing up waiting for more attention. “Sorry bud,” Cain said, “I need to make a log real quick.” he patted Boomer on the head and turned towards the window and said, “Computer, personal log.” After a moment he started saying, “I have been traveling to the last known location of the USS Memorial. No major incidents at all. My younger brother has been assigned to the USS Manhattan as an engineer now that he has graduated from the Academy. I told him a little about the ship and crew but left the fact that the Chief Engineer was female. I wonder if he will find out the wrong way. Computer end recording.” Cain smirked as he finished the recording.

The shuttle was close to where Starfleet thought the Memorial might be and Cain was looking at his sensors when Boomer went to high alert. Cain looked down at Boomer when suddenly, a bright light caused him to shield his eyes and grab Boomer. He felt himself going unconscious and tried to send out a distress call but was not sure if he had hit it.

Captain Nighroad

The operations console on the bridge beeped to gain the attention of the ensign who was stood at it.

“That’s weird,” he said, spotting something that wasn’t there previously. Suddenly the blip started transmitting a distress call.

OOC: anyone want to play the on duty bridge officer?

GM

“What do we got ensign?” Lt. Tolly asked putting his hands on the back of the chair he would normally be at.

“Looks like a distress call from a Starfleet Transponder, a few thousand kilometres off the port bow.” He pressed a few buttons and the view screen image changed to a Starfleet shuttlecraft adrift in space.

GM
Tolly hesitated briefly before commanding, “Helm, alter course to within transporter range.” He then inquired, “Are we detecting any life signs?” “Aye, Sir. Three life signs detected,” came the prompt response. Acknowledging with a nod, John issued a yellow alert and addressed the tactical station, “Conduct a full sensor sweep of the vicinity, including a tachyon sweep for any cloaked vessels. Once we’re within transporter range, beam the life signs directly to sick bay.” The unified response from all stations was a resounding, “YES, SIR!”

“Able, what is going on?” Cain voiced before realizing he was on the shuttle craft still, not at his parents home. Looking around he saw Boomer looking relieved that his master was moving.
Cain realized that he needed to check on the other passenger that came along on the mission, Commander Frank Silva, a doctor that volunteered to join him on the mission. Cain tapped his com badge and said, =^=Doctor Silva, are you still with us?=^= and waited for a reply.

Captain Cain Nightroad

A groggy, but crisp retort came back, =/\= Dr. Silva here. Reporting in, Captain. How may I be of assistance?=/\=

He had been in his berth in one of the passenger cabins on the shuttle, reading something or the other, and quickly rose, grabbing his medical kit.

Dr. Silva

Cain said back through his badge, =^=I don’t know what happened just now, please come up to the drive section of the craft.=^= Cain needed to figure out what happened.

Captain Cain Nightroad

The sensors showed no other vessels, cloaked or otherwise, in the vicinity. As the ship came into range, the ensign at ops attempted to beam the crew into sickbay.

Onboard the USS Memorial, John placed his hand on the shoulder of the Ensign at the Operations panel, halting the transport process. “Wait,” he commanded. The Ensign glanced up, meeting his gaze, and John continued, “Hail them.” With a swift nod and mere seconds later, the Ensign reported, “Channel open, Sir.” John returned the nod in acknowledgment and spoke into the comm, “This is the USS Memorial to Federation Shuttlecraft. We have received your distress call. How may we assist you?” He stood by, awaiting their response.

Cain got up off the deck and sat at the shuttles con. Looking back at Boomer, he tapped the console and replied. “Memorial, this is Captain Cain Nightroad, I am not sure what just happened but please prepare your shuttle bay so we may land.”

Cain tapped his leg and Boomer trotted over to him for attention.

Captain Cain Nightroad

“Aye, Sir,” he responded promptly, pivoting to the tactical station. “Ensign, ensure shuttle bay one is prepared,” he commanded, tapping his commbadge. ::/\:: “Bridge to Lieutenant Turner, please meet me at shuttle bay one; we have guests coming aboard,” he announced, stepping into the turbolift bound for the shuttle bay.

Cain started tapping the control panel and the shuttle started moving towards the beacon from the Memorial. Cain tapped his com badge and said, =^=Doctor, we have found the Memorial and are about to land in its shuttle bay.=^= Cain was ready to find out what was going on and the Captain and XO of the ship should be able to provide that information.

Captain Cain Nightroad

Silva popped out from the confines of the shuttle and smiled gently at Nightroad. “Ah well then should I join you, and acquaint myself with the new ship?” he asked in a soft, genteel fashion.

Dr. Silva

Officers and Brass.. and an Ensign. It sounded like the opening line of a bad joke. Lera wasn’t one for jokes so she’d stayed pretty quiet and to herself during the journey in the shuttle.

All she knew, from boarding and eavesdropping, was that the Memorial had gone missing, and they were to find her. Had she been a scientist, the young engineer could have helped. But knowing how to crawl through Jeffries tubes and remove panel covers wasn’t much a help in this situation. So she remained quiet, invisible and just listened.

When they finally docked, Lera tugged down the front of her uniform tunic, made sure her long, crimson hair was still up in regulation fashion, and grabbed her duffel before looking into the passageway. She added herself to the end of the line of those disembarking.

Once on the bustling hanger, she took a moment to listen. Something had happened. Something not right. But, at least what she heard here, no one was exactly sure what.

The Ensign quick stepped to the security officer Ruth the padd in his hand, seeming to take note of the arrivals. Giving her name, he quickly greeted then dismissed her with the number of her berthing and a reminder to get checked in swiftly because everyone was needed right away.

A few minutes, and one wrong turn later, Lera palmed open her quarters and looked around. Tossing her bag on the small couch, she smiled. “Okay, Lera… time to get to work.”
