While in sick bay, Penji meets Ensign Tane TeWhiti, a fellow science officer. They talked about why they’re aboard the Memorial. They would soon become friends. They talked about their time at the academy and compared the classes they took. After they both left the sick bay together, they went to 10-forward.

OOC: Hey since you ended your post with Tane and Penji heading to 10-forward, I’ve picked up from there at 2-forward (this ships equivilant), and have changed the topic to fit. :)

IC: Despite his average height, Tane’s size was often a deterrant when it came to making friends, so when Penji invited him to 2-forward Tane happily agreed. It would be nice to have a friend in his department and the Catullan seemed like a good candidate. As the two of them walked into 2-Forward. Tane made a beeline for the bar, looking forward to chatting with Penji over a quick drink before Tane completed his reporting in.

“A Sorian Brandy for myself, and whatever my friend here would like,” Tane ordered, waving an arm at the other Science officer. Waiting patiently for Penji to order what he wanted.

“I’ll have a Saurian Brandy too.” Penji turns to his new friend Tane and makes a toast, “To our friendship, may we have great adventures together”. Penji was glad he found a good friend. The Catullan wasn’t lonely any more.

OOC: I just signed your post off for you, we tend to do that on here to avoid confusion so people know who wrote what. Normally they sign it with rank, name and department, like I’ve done above :)

IC: “To our friendship,” Tane grinned and took a large mouthful of the Brandy, “What made you join Starfleet?” he asked conversationally, curious to learn more about his new friend.

“I don’t know, I guess I like to explore the stars”, Penji said to Tane. “I was always interested with life on other planets”. “How about you, Tane”?

“For the adventure,” Tane took another swig of his drink, “I grew up on a small farm on Earth, I used to love exploring as a child, and when I ran out of places to explore I came here. You can’t get a bigger adventure than in space,” He chuckled, “Man we used to do the silliest things as kids, there was a river that ran through the back of our farm and my older brother Kaouri and I constructed a raft out of bits of wood without any idea about how to build a raft or how floatation worked or anything like that and it sunk.” He shook his head at the memory, but there was a michevious twinkle in his eye, “Our next one was much better, we’d pretend we were sailing off to explore new worlds.”

“Have you met the Chief Science Officer yet?”

“Yes I did,” Penji said. “I met him briefly, but he explained what the routine is on the Memorial. I think I could enjoy my time on this ship. This ship is a lot bigger than I imagined it would be. I guess I better read the manual to get familiar with everything.”

“I’m sure you will,” Tane said, “And the ship is big, but give it some time and you’ll your way around as well as the Captain,” he winked, “So what’s the Chief like?” he asked conspirtorally

” He’s a nice guy for a human. I think he takes the job seriously” Ens. Fil said. “He did say any time you need to talk to me, feel free to come to my office. So I’ll make sure to take him at his offer, if I have a problem”, Penji said as he laughed a little.

“Good to know,” Tane grinned, it sounded like their department head was a good guy, which was a plus. With so many people all working on a ship together there was bound to be tension between a couple of people here and there, but having a department head you could get along with, made life so much easier and as a general rule he tried his hardest to befriend everyone he could.

His attention stuck with Penji’s comment about the CSO being a nice guy for a human and he wonder if the Catullan had had problems with other humans in the past. “What’s it like being so far from home?” He asked casually. Not wanting to make assumptions.

“Sometimes I feel lonely,” Penji said as he tired to remember what life was like at home. “But getting to know my fellowship mates, I…feel better. My mind was pre-occupied with the academy, this ship and stuff, so I really had no time to think about being lonely. Yeah, sometimes I think about it in my quarters, but I let it slide.
Don’t get me wrong about the CSO, he’s OK, I guess it’s me being the only Catullan on board. I just keep busy” Fil said. “What about you Tane, how do you feel about
being so far from home? What do you think about , when you’re on the ship?”

“I guess it would be hard being the only one of your kind,” the other Ensign mused thoughtfully, “I have a sister in Starfleet did you know? She’s a doctor on a Starbase in another section. For a couple of months we were on the same ship together, but then she transfered out and it was lonely then.” He shrugged, “I’m a real family man I guess, I’ve got so many brothers and sisters, it’s weird when they’re not all in your hair all the time.” He chuckled fondly, “I make sure to contact them every night if I can. it helps,”

“And of course the people on the ship quickly begin to feel like family when you’ve all been living together for long enough, it’s not quite the same but it works.”

“I know what you mean Tane. At least you have brothers and sisters. Its just me and my parents” Fil said. ” I guess that’s why I don’t mind being a loaner. Oh, I have friends, but something is missing when you don’t have family to talk to. I like serving aboard the Memorial and meeting new people. I’ll make a ‘family’ with the crew. If I can’t trust them–who can I trust.”

“There’s seven of us including myself. Mate you should have heard the squabbles we had as kids,” Tane grinned, “There was many a time I wished I was an only child. Although I don’t believe the saying that you can’t choose your family. I reckon anyone can be family if you want them to be.” His mind flashed to Ladzi his girlfriend.

“But you’re right,” The other Ensign agreed, “It’s just not the same without family. I was lucky to have Aroha - my little sister - on the same ship as me for a while. But you’re not a loner and you can trust us.” He took another sip of his Saurian Brandy sinking the rest of it back with ease,”

“Ens. Fil finished his drink, got up and said, “Well it’s been a pleasure talking to you Tane, but I have to get to my post in a few minutes. Perhaps we can meet up later and talk some more.”
