Cain moved through the ship with a stack of PaDDs in his hand. The lower rank promotions had already been given out but the Department Head promotions he personally liked doing.

Normally, he would have a large ceremony on the holodeck with all senior staff present but that would have to wait till the current situation was handled. Security was his next stop.

Cain walked into the security area looking for Ensign Gainn. When Cain spotted him, he said, “Ensign Gainn, could I have a moment of your time.”

Rado looked up from his PADD. Seeing the new Captain, he stood up from his chair. “Of course, sir.” He responded, “Uh, what is it?”

Cain thought about playing a game but with the situation the ship and crew were in he decided to be straight forward and answer Rado’s question. Retrieving the correct PaDD from the group, Cain responded with, “By order of Starfleet, Ensign Rado has been advanced to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade and selected to assume the duties of Security Chief with all the authority given to this posting.”

After a moment, Cain continued with, Congratulations Mr. Gainn, continue with your duties here and I will see you soon at your post on the Bridge.”

Did Rado just hear the captain right? Was he being promoted? What happened to Commander Turner? “Uh, I’m sorry, what?” He asked, completely dumbfounded.

Cain looked at Rado and said, “Let’s see, promotion, head of Security, I think I got it all.” Cain chuckled a bit at that and said. “We will talk more later but I have to meet up with all the departments.”

So he wasn’t hallucinating. “Uh, okay. Cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool.” After a few moments of internal panic, “I, uh, look to joining you on the bridge.”

Cain smiled as he looked back at Rado and said, “I look forward to it too Mr. Gainn.” and started his walk to the hanger bay.

After a few moments and turbolift rides to the hanger bay, he was finally standing in front of the CAGs office. Looking in, Cain said, Major Arlen I presume.” and waited to see if the CAG understood the ancient movie lingo.

“Yes, sir,” John replied. He’d given up having a true office in favor of a squadron ready room, and snapped to his feet at the CO’s entrance. There was a hint of weariness in his stance - constant alert status was a bit taxing - but otherwise he appeared as energetic as ever. “What can I do for you?”

Just like with Mr. Gainn, Cain thought he might have a little fun with this even with the situation the crew and ship were in. Cain tried his best to act disgruntled and stated, “Mr. Arlen, it upsets me when my Officers walk around the ship out of uniform.” After a quick pause, Cain continued, “Would you care to explain this?” and waited for his response while trying to maintain this composure.

John’s response was less of shock and more of almost bored resignation. “While we’re under alert conditions, our flight suits are authorized uniforms for all pilots,” he explained, as he’d done with almost every CO so far. “Outside of those conditions, they’ve typically been allowed provided no flag officer or VIP is embarked, although if you’d like to change that…” He glanced down at his console, giving the status updates a once-over.

Cain couldn’t keep up the charade any longer and burst out laughing. After calming down for a moment, Cain replied, “I was having some fun but I meant your rank insignia was out of uniform.” With that, Cain handed John the PaDD with his official promotion to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and said, “Congratulations.”
