Ensign Isabelle Royce, (Doctor) (Judy Earp) in Sickbay

After pausing for a brief moment to ensure she was “all there”, Isabelle Royce requested permission to come aboard. Not waiting for a reply, she stepped off the platform, eager to be as far away from the transporter as possible. She gave the Ensign at the controls a brief nod and smile while inquiring of the location of the CMO, Dr. Silva. After instructing the Ensign to transport her belongings directly to her quarters, she proceeded out the doors and into the corridor. Locating the turbo lift , she entered and gave her desired location, Sickkbay 1, to the computer. During the brief ride, Royce mentally went over her cover story. It was purposely drab and vague. Too soon the turbo lift stopped and she stepped out into Sickbay. It looked fairly busy with what appeared to be on boarding physicals. Hoping that the basically dull routine, the CMO would be more or less on autopilot and that any discrepancies in her records would go unnoticed. She hated lying, but in this case it was necessary.

Surveying the area, she spied the officer who was obviously the CMO, exiting an exam room. As she walked toward him, she gave a small wave to catch his attention. Smiling and handing him her PADD with her orders on it, she stated “Ensign Isabelle Royce reporting for duty sir”. She followed him into his office and they took their respective seats. He continued to scrutinize her records for what seemed to her a bit longer than necessary.
After the routine questions and formalities, she confirmed that her specialties were Emergency Medicine and Robotic Orthopedic Prosthesis. Both of these specialties came in very handy on a starship. Ending the initial interview, Royce asked “Your Sickbay looks pretty busy, would you like me to get started immediately or on my next shift?”.

Frank was a middle aged man with thick black hair that was greying at the temples and blue eyes that peered over the top of of half moon glasses. He had a distinct fatherly quality about him but was not, exactly, one to rush these things right away.

“Oh let’s take a look shall we?” he said as he sat down and reviewed her personnel file. It was a long process, with not a lot of communicating from the CMO. Occasionally a “hmm,” or a “Good, good” as he read it very thoroughly. When he was done he sat it aside and crossed his legs at the knee. “Very interesting file, you have there Ensign. When was your last medical examination? You need one of those and a counselor note to clear you for duty, of course.”

“Of course Dr. Silva, I’m very well versed in Starfleet protocol, especially as pertains to the medical field. I just had a complete physical prior to this assignment, to ascertain that I was fit to return to duty. It should be in my records ” Dr. Royce replied.

Frank blinked a few times with that elder statesman look the nodded. “Of course,” he said in a flat tone before giving a small smile. “I must be growing addled in my dotage.”

He motioned to the sickbay outside of his office door, “You may also want to visit with the XO, hmm? Make yourself available. Unless we have a critical event I am sure I can handle it for the next 48 hours or so.” He paused and then asked, “You have served on a ship before, yes? 8 on, 16 off, and we rotate watches every three weeks. So you have first watch starting in two days.”

Isabelle bit her tongue to keep from replying that just exactly where did he think she’d go in the middle of God only knows sector of space. As she caught herself she wondered if maybe she should go ahead and just say it. He might just assume that the reason for a forty something year old Ensign was she’d been busted for her insubordinate tongue. Laughing to herself she decided it was probably his way of getting her to fill in the blanks. Resisting the temptation she replied “Yes, several ships. Thank you for giving me a couple of days to unpack and settle in, it’s been quite a journey getting here.”

A smile crossed his lips at that answer, “Anything I can do to help.”

He watched her for quite a while longer and asked, “Why are you here, Isabelle? Why the Memorial?”

Isabelle had anticipated this line of questions and replied readily, “To make a long story short, I took a leave of absence from Starfleet to raise my children. The youngest is now firmly established and I decided that the time was right to return to Starfleet. I returned to active duty about two years ago. A year and a half ago I was assisting the evacuation of civilians from Axios 13, our shuttle pilot turned out to be an enemy agent on a suicide mission, determined to crash the shuttle into the planet. When his intentions became apparent, we were able to get the evacuees secured safely. Fortunately we were still within the atmosphere and hadn’t gained enough speed to make the crash totally catastrophic. I sustained several injuries and had been recuperating until medically fit to return to active duty. I had no particular preference as to ship assignment and Starfleet saw fit to send me here, so here I am.”

“Very exciting,” came the CMOs response. It wasn’t a patronizing tone, but one that was truly impressed , though with little emotion behind it. “I never married, nor dealt with spies. Ask me about my experiences with Rulot sometime, however,” he gave a small smile and spoke with genuine excitement for the first time all conversation, “I love plants.”

After reigning in his exuberance he tilted his head, “Yes. We all go where personnel sends us, at the end of the day. The Memorial is a fine ship. I haven’t been here long myself but she is something of a treasure. A time capsule. You should read the plaques on the walls when you have a moment. Several interesting stories.”

Ens. Isabelle Royce, Doctor

He finally sized up Royce one more time before nodding, “Unpack your belongings, talk with the counsellor and XO, then report back at 0800. If there is nothing else, you are dismissed, Doctor Royce.”
