USS Memorial, Ens. Royce’s QuartersAs Ensign Royce entered her quarters, she was greeted by the complaining voices of her two Savannah cats. Their language was a mix of meows from their domestic cat heritage and a series of hisses reflecting their African Serval heritage. To the uninitiated their sound was quite terrifying and she thought to herself the transporter officer was probably more than happy to beam them directly to her quarters. Unlatching their crate she spoke with them as they purred and brushed against her leg, “Did my kitty boys have a good trip?” . Jumanji ignored her question going off to explore the new territory, but Charles had plenty to say, obviously complaining. “OK Charles, the trip is over. Are you hungry?”, her question was rapidly answered with a series of very forceful meows. “Charles, are you ever not hungry?” Royce replied to the big cat as she went to the replicator and input instructions for the cats’ meals.” She took the bowls and proceeded to serve them to the cats.
With peace and quite restored, she looked around at her quarters. They were nice, but a bit less than what she was accustomed to. She thought to herself it didn’t matter, she was relatively safe and that was more important than her surroundings. Hearing a soft beep, she saw that she had a message on her personal communications console. Sitting down she observed it was from Starfleet Medical, Admiral Miller requesting her to return his call at her convenience. She smiled to herself , input the proper codes for returning the call and settled down for a long conversation. Chris was quite the talker. Within a few seconds his familiar face appeared on the screen, greeting her with a look of relief, “Its good to see you safe and sound, how was the trip?”. Isabelle replied, “I wish I could say uneventful. but let’s just say it was an adventure.” Sounding worried he asked “What happened?”. “Nothing serious” she replied laughing “but having to hitch a ride on a Klingon freighter was an experience to say the least, but here I am, safe and sound”.
“Good, good” he replied and proceeded to talk about the latest goings on at Starfleet Medical and HQ, the really juicy gossip. She knew this monologue was going to take awhile, so she settled in. Remembering how Chris and Tom would talk daily like this, she felt a brief wave of sadness. She knew that he missed Tom, probably almost as much as she did. Ever since her late husband Tom’s murder he had decided that her safety and well being was now his responsibility. She was pretty sure there was a bit of guilt mixed in too.
After finishing his discourse he finally asked “Are you sure it was the right move? I mean being on a ship? “. Isabelle replied “We discussed this and I really thank you whole heartedly for making this possible. You know I felt like a sitting duck, hiding in my own home, always looking over my shoulder. Honestly I feel much safer on a ship”.
With obvious relief he answered “Well good then. I’m really sorry about the rank reduction, I really tried, but Starfleet though it would be easier to slip by unnoticed in the multitude of new graduates. But I did get them to at least continue with your salary of your original rank and receive Tom’s pension.”. Isabelle felt sorry that he had spent so much time advocating for her and replied “I know you did your best and had my best interests at heart and I thank you.” Isabelle replied knowing that he really did. Continuing on she said “On a brighter note, I think it’s a good excuse to let them think I got busted down in rank for my sassy tongue” and they both laughed at that. “Speaking of a cover story” Isabelle said more seriously, “You know how I feel about lying. Do you think the CO, XO and CMO should be told?”. Chris cleared his throat before replying “I’ve been told, that we need to keep this under our hats, but they will be told if and or when it should become necessary.”. Isabelle could tell by his tone, he didn’t fully agree with that decision and replied, “OK, until I hear different then.”. The conversation then went on for a little while more with inquires into different friends and family members until Chris’ wife called him to dinner.
Standing up and stretching after the long conversation, she notice the chronometer indicated nearly two hours had passed. No wonder she was hungry. Before going about getting dinner, she instructed the computer to make an appointment with the XO and Counselor at their earliest convenience, Then she headed out the door in search of dinner. She decided the Officers Mess would be a good place to observe and meet crew members. She knew that in her position, she would eventually meet most if not all when they were seeking medical attention, but it would be better to have a friendly rapport with them beforehand. Entering the Dining Hall she glanced around and saw .... TBCEns. Isabelle Royce, Doctor
