Meanwhile, in the transporter room, the energy from the cylindrical ship’s weapon started being pulled into the mysterious cube that was still hovering in the air, glowing a hue of neon blue. As more and more energy was absorbed by the cube, the light it was emitting became brighter. The transporter chief covered his eyes just as a large pulse emitted from the cube, causing a number of EPS conduits to explode. As the main lights failed and the emergency lights came on, the cube fell to the ground with a heavy thud.

Sifeda’s eyes darted to the cube as it crashed onto the floor, the dull thud reverberating through the room. The pulse of energy had left a buzzing in her ears. The transporter room was in chaos, sparks flying from the destroyed EPS conduits, the emergency lights casting eerie shadows. Her instincts kicked in, and she moved toward the fallen cube, her boots crunching over the debris.

What is it doing now? she thought, her eyes narrowing at the neon blue object. It had absorbed an incredible amount of energy from the ship’s weapon, but there was no way of telling if it had reached its limit or was merely waiting to release that energy in another form.

Sifeda crouched down beside the cube, her hand hovering just above its surface. The heat radiating from it was intense. Whatever happened next, she had a feeling they were about to find out exactly what this cube was capable of.

Ensign Desari Valen shielded her face as the cube emitted its blinding pulse, the transporter room now filled with the crackle of overloaded EPS conduits and the smell of burnt circuits. As the cube hit the ground with a heavy thud, she quickly stepped forward to Commander Itri, still crouched near the glowing object. “Commander, this thing just absorbed a massive energy load, but we don’t know how stable it is,” Desari said, pulling out her handheld scanner. Her eyes widened as she read the data. “It’s storing the energy, but the fluctuations are unstable. If it discharges again, it could cause more damage. We need to contain it, fast.”

The tricorder suddenly flickered off; it had obviously been affected by the pulse that had been given off by the cube. If the Ensign used a second tricorder, one that worked, she would see that there was no power stored in the cube.

Sifeda’s gaze remained fixed on the cube as Desari’s words filtered through the chaos. The energy fluctuations were real, palpable, even without looking at the ensign’s scanner. But something nagged at the back of her mind, a sensation she couldn’t shake, a quiet hum that suggested things were not as they seemed.

She reached into her belt for her tricorder, thumbing it on and watching as it struggled to process data, the screen flickering momentarily before going dark. Another pulse? Or something else entirely? Desari’s report echoed in her ears, but the tricorder’s failure told her something new.

“It’s not about containing it anymore,” she muttered under her breath, standing up slowly, eyes never leaving the cube. The energy’s not just fluctuating. It had to be doing something else, something more insidious. The way it absorbed power from their systems didn’t add up. If it had truly held the energy Desari described, there should have been a volatile reaction by now—a discharge, a release, anything. But nothing was happening.

“Desari,” Sifeda said, her voice steady despite the growing tension. “Try scanning again. If that thing was about to release energy, we’d know. But my tricorder—” she raised it, showing its dead screen “—is telling me there’s nothing left inside. Whatever power it took… it isn’t storing it. I think we’ve been thinking about this all wrong. This cube doesn’t need containment. It’s siphoning energy for a reason, but it’s not storing it. What if it’s sending it somewhere?”
