Like all the other doors on the Memorial, the doors to the Chief of Security’s office opened swiftly with the push of a button. Ensign Rado Gainn was still a little giddy about it. Inside he saw a young man who he assumed to be Lieutenant Turner sitting at a desk while seemingly going over forms of some sort. Walking forward he stopped in front of the man before him and gave a salute, “Ensign Rado Gainn, reporting for duty, sir!”

Jack looked up as the ensign walked in trying shake his mind off the reports he was staring at. He sized the ensign up trying to get a feel for him. New and ready to serve though admittedly a little old to only be an ensign. Jack wondered if he had started later in starfleet or if he had been reprimanded at some point. Jack had not not caught a moment to look over the man’s file yet. Standing to his feet he returned the Ensign’s salute and motioned to the chair in front of his desk. “You must be Ensign Gainn” he noted walking over to the replicator. “Can I get you anything? ” he asked as he replicated himself a glass of pineapple juice.

“Alvas would be fine, sir,” Rado said as he sat down, figuring that it would look bad if he asked for Springwine, his truly desired drink, “Listen, is there anything you want me to do, sir? Anything at all?”

Jack replicated the drink and sat it down on the desk in front of Rado, “Tell me a little about your self Ensign” he suggested settling down into his chair and taking a sip off his coffee that was now getting cold. He wrinkled his nose in disappointment. Setting the coffee down he focused on the Ensigns response.

“If my ordering of a Bajoran drink and nose ridges didn’t make it clear, I am from Bajor, Hathon to be specific,” The ensign explained, pointing to the iconic ridges on every Bajoran’s nose bridge. “When the Cardassians finally left my homeworld, I applied to join the academy but due to a lack of money, I wasn’t able to board a ship to San Francisco for about a year.”

Jack gave a small chuckle it was very clear from the man’s appearance that he was in fact a Bajoran,”How as your time at the Academy you obviously graduated but tell me what you thought?” he said looking through the officers record for any flight training.

Rado thought back to his academy years. “I like the meals they served. As for my classes, I did well in my combat courses, my science and medical grades were passing, while my flight ones were okay.”

Jack gave a nod and a smile, “So tell me ensign” he said taking a sip off his coffee and again remembering why he had set it down to begin with. “What are you wanting to get out of your time in Starfleet?” he asked. “What are your aspirations? “

“My good friend Ragu Gasha made me promise her that I would one day be captain.” Rado told him, “I’d hate to disappoint her.”
Rado paused before adding, “Which reminds me: in the event of my death, please contact the Ragu family when you’re notifying the next of kin.”

Marking down Ragu’s request in his file. “Well Captain is likely a ways off, that’s a hard path lot of responsibility is that something you want? ” he asked putting his coffed cup back in the replicator.

Rado sighed heavily. This had been on his mind for a while. “I don’t even know, sir. Gasha was my best friend on Bajor, and when she suddenly gave me the money for the transport to the Academy she looked so…sad. I think she made a sacrifice of some sort for me.” Rado told Turner before adding, “I, uh, have no intention of backstabbing the captain or something.”

Jack smirked ” I would certainly hope not” he said shifting in his seat . “I would think that if your friend sacrificed something for you to get you here, you being happy and successful and happy was the goal.” his face turned more serious. “Command is not something to take lightly you have to want it, the burden of it can be brutal at times.” he said shifting the padd in front of him over “But what do I know, I’m a helmet fire.” he chuckled. “Here, your assigned to the brig it’s normally slow down there and it will give you a chance to get to know ship protocol”

Rado smiled and got up from his chair, “Yes, sir.” He chirped, exiting Turner’s office.
