Sifeda walked in silence to the ready room. Once inside, she waited for Lieutenant Tolly and the doors to close before she turned to face him. Her eyes flashed with controlled anger, and she took a moment to gather her thoughts before speaking.

“Lieutenant, what happened down there was unacceptable,” she began, her voice low but edged with steel. “You undermined my authority in front of not only the Ferengi but also the rest of the crew. Do you have any idea how that affects our mission and my command?”

Sifeda crossed her arms, her eyes narrowing as she fixed Lieutenant Tolly with an intense stare. “Permission granted to speak freely, Lieutenant, but mind your step at the same time.” She took a step closer to him, as she waited to hear what was going to come out of his mouth.

John inhaled deeply, contemplating his words carefully. He aimed for honesty without seeming disrespectful. “Sir, I wish you had trusted me,” he finally voiced. “With all due respect, I had the situation under control.” He paused, weighing his next words. “It wasn’t my intention to challenge your authority, but it felt like you doubted my competence. Although I haven’t pursued a command career, my upbringing was steeped in high-level diplomacy—my father, an Admiral, and my mother, a member of the Federation Council. I’ve learned a great deal from their experiences”

Sifeda kept her gaze locked on Tolly, her expression unreadable. His words hung in the air between them. She didn’t immediately respond, allowing the silence to stretch out. She was aware of the tension simmering beneath the surface, both within herself and him.
When she finally spoke after a long thought, her voice was measured and steady. “Lieutenant Tolly,” she began, “Your background, your upbringing, those are commendable. But they are not substitutes for experience in command. I don’t doubt your abilities, Lieutenant, but I need to know that when decisions are made, they are made with full consideration of the mission, the crew, and the chain of command. I had no intention of giving that Ferengi latinum bars, it just wasn’t going to happen.”

Sifeda took a step back, unfolding her arms, relaxing a bit. “You may feel that you had the situation under control, and perhaps you did. But my role here is not just to assess individual performances, but to ensure the cohesion and effectiveness of the entire unit. When I stepped in, it wasn’t a reflection of your capabilities, but a necessity dictated by the circumstances.”
Her eyes softened slightly, though her voice remained firm. “I understand your perspective, Lieutenant. And I appreciate your candor. But understand this, my actions were not about doubting you; they were about facilitating this mission. She let her words linger for a moment before adding, “You have my trust but I expect yours, as your commanding officer, as well.”
Sifeda then straightened up, signaling that the conversation was nearing its conclusion. “Do you have anything else to say, Lieutenant?” she asked, her tone making it clear that she was open to hearing more, but that the time for debate was over.
