John strolled down the corridor, tugging at his uniform to get it to sit right. He’d dropped off his (admittedly limited) personal effects in his quarters and changed from his flight suit into a standard duty uniform, but like always after flying for a while, the shipboard uniform felt wrong. Maybe it was that it was too comfortable, not all that different from the ship itself. Not that that was bad, per se, but it was certainly an adjustment after the very stark and utilitarian setting Starbase 178 had been. His quarters were certainly nice, but the other problem was that they were 15 decks away from the landing bay if anything happened. He’d have to ask about the possibility of getting quarters near the squadron’s ready room.

Shaking his head to clear his thoughts, John stopped at the door to the office and pressed the chime.

Sifeda glanced up from the stack of reports on her desk as the chime sounded. She knew who it would be before she even pressed the button to open the door. Major John Arlen was nothing if not punctual, and she had been expecting him.
“Enter,” she called, leaning back in her chair.

John stepped into the room, glancing quickly about to get the general layout and letting his attention fall on the woman behind the desk. He snapped to attention, bringing up a sharp salute. “Commander Itri, Major John Arlen reporting. Wing Squadron 108 is aboard and accounted for.”

Sifeda Itri returned Major Arlen’s salute with the practiced ease of someone who had spent years in command. “At ease, Major,” she said, motioning for him to take a seat. She observed him for a moment as she waited for him to settled into the chair opposite her desk. There was a time for fellowship and lieusure but she appreciated when officers were formal and prompt in their duties.

“Thank you for the prompt report,” she continued, steepling her fingers. “How are you all adapting to the ship? We will be readying for our next mission soon so it is critical everyone is settled in and ready.”

“We’re settling in well - it is certainly much nicer than the last post. My only concern is the distance my assigned quarters are from the landing bay, in case of an emergency requiring me to be ready for engagement quickly. Is there a possibility of my switching to quarters on deck 18 through 20?” John requested.

Sifeda regarded him thoughtfully. His request was reasonable, given his role and the need for rapid response in emergencies. She valued proactive officers who thought ahead about their readiness.“Your concern is valid, Major,” she replied, her tone even and considerate. “I will look into the availability of quarters on those decks and see if a suitable arrangement can be made. I dont think it will be a problem. Anything else?”

“No, Ma’am,” John replied. “The Memorial is a beautiful ship and I’m sure we’ll feel at home in a few days.” He paused. “Do you have any orders or info for me that wasn’t in the reports?”

Sifeda regarded Major Arlen with a nod of acknowledgment. “No additional orders at this time, Major,” she responded, her gaze steady as she hesitated then said, “However, “Major,” Sifeda paused again then said, “we’ve just received an urgent transmission. We’re on course to intercept a Ferengi vessel. What can you tell me about the Ferengi, based on your experience? Have you ever encountered them on one of your missions?”
