Aiden entered the Security office, the atmosphere tinged with a sense of purpose and vigilance. Glancing around, he noted the orderly arrangement of consoles and the focused demeanour of the officers on duty. However, the absence of the Chief of Security caught his attention, prompting him to take the initiative to introduce himself to the officers present.

“Good afternoon,” Aiden greeted with a nod, his tone projecting authority tempered with warmth. “I’m Captain Aiden Voss, the new commanding officer. I’m looking for the Chief of Security. Could you tell me where they might be, and please I have your names, please?”

Tyr had been sitting leisurely behind one of the consoles chatting with NE Black, his wingman and occasional duty shift partner. He looked up when the new officer entered with a curious expression. He noticed the pips just as Voss introduced himself and practically jumped out of his chair, Black followed suit at first confused. Tyr stood stiffly at attention looking straight ahead “Ensign Týr Bragason” He hesitated “Tyr” He repronounced his name for easier pronunciation “Lieutenant Beckett should be returning shortly from the Hangar Deck, sir.” He announced in a clear voice, taking care not to shout as his first instincts had been. He ran through his words in his mind hoping that he hadn’t made a sir sandwich for the Captain.

Aiden raised a hand in a calming gesture and offered a warm smile. “Please, stand at ease. I’m simply taking a stroll around the ship, acquainting myself with its crew and our surroundings,” he explained. He noted the slight deviation in his choice of words—the crew as “the ship’s” rather than his own—which was uncommon among captains. While many believed the ship and its crew belonged to them, Aiden saw himself more as a steward, entrusted with their care.

Tyr and Black relaxed visibly both spreading their legs and putting hands behind their backs in a practiced manoeuvre. They exchanged a glance that said nothing and everything, they were clearly uncomfortable being alone with the new Captain as young officers often were but adapted quickly.

“How’s your shift going? All quiet on the western front?” he inquired, his tone friendly as he addressed the two officers before him. He sought to strike a balance between maintaining a professional demeanor and fostering an atmosphere of camaraderie among the crew.

Tyr blinked at the reference? he wasn’t sure, it sounded similar to something his brother had said before, some ancient war text he wasn’t sure “Uh yes, sir” He hesitated, reminding himself not to overuse the honorific “We finished our rounds half an hour ago, just finished our reports and are on monitor duties.” He wasn’t exactly sure if he was giving too much information or not “Things are as quiet as usual” He paused “Although we had a noise complaint earlier from one of the Junior officer’s quarters, violin practice that went a bit loud but beyond that nothing”

Aiden nodded, appreciating the update from Tyr. “Thank you, Lieutenant. It’s good to know that everything is running smoothly. As for the noise complaint, I trust it’s been addressed appropriately?” He paused, considering the situation. “If there’s anything else out of the ordinary, don’t hesitate to inform me. Otherwise, keep up the good work.”

Lt. Kudas and Lt. Stone walked in from being in between their round. Upon seeing the captain and the nervous ensigns, they both gave a slight chuckle to each other remembering when we were in that position. “Good afternoon, sir. How are you today?” Lt. Kudas asked the captain as Lt. Stone replaced his PADD.

Aza watched as Captain Voss engaged with the security officers, her thoughts drifting as she observed the exchange. She noted his easy rapport with the crew and his genuine interest in their well-being.

“Good afternoon, Lieutenants,” Aiden greeted warmly, his mood lifted by the friendly atmosphere among the crew. “I’m doing quite well, thank you. Just getting acquainted with the ship and its crew,” he replied with a smile, appreciating the easy rapport they shared. “How are your rounds going? Any notable updates or concerns?” he inquired, eager to stay informed about the ship’s operations from those directly involved.

Tyr and Black exchanged a chagrined smile once the Captain’s attention was redirected. Black had been on the ship long enough to no longer be nervous around senior Staff but Tyr had only been an officer for a few months and he still had ingrained into him a need to salute every collar with more than two pips and his unease was infectious. He gave the Lieutenants a nod, Kudas already had a decade in rank and for a moment he envied the ease with which he navigated around the Captain.

A moment later the heavy security doors peeled back with the ever-familiar mechanical whir, admitting Becket who moved at a brisk parade march before drawing up short. More bodies in the security center than there should be. Of course, she immediately clocked the Command red. “Captain Voss,” she said briskly in greeting. Blue eyes scanned the room, paired with a stony mask, though tinged with faint suspicion.

“Ah, Lieutenant Beckett, your security team was just updating me on the current situation. They provided a thorough briefing, although I’m sure there are always a few details kept under wraps,” he remarked with a friendly smile. “I appreciate your vigilance in catching me before I departed. Shall we continue the tour together?”

Lt. Kudas and Lt. Stone had just finished briefing the Captain when Lt. Beckett came in. When the Captain turned their attention to the COS, they took that time to go back to getting what they needed for the rest of their rounds. Lt. Kudas turned to Ensign Tyr. “I don’t think we have fully met yet. You handled the captain showing up really well. Keep up the good work.” Lt. Kudas stated as Lt. Stone reappeared, ready to continue the rest of their patrol.
