Aiden stood in the well-lit briefing room, his back to the door whilst he watched shuttles and ships buzz around the starbase, a sense of anticipation coursing through him. Refreshments adorned the table, offering a small comfort amidst the gravity of their impending discussion. Each seat had a PaDD prepared, courtesy of Lieutenant Kindle, their diligent intelligence officer and his loyal friend. As he waited for his department heads to arrive, Aiden took a moment to gather his thoughts, ready to lead his crew into the challenges that lay ahead.

Emery walked back in a cheeky smile on her face as she brought over a platter of miniature muffins, flavors from blueberry, strawberry, lemon truffle, vanilla bean cream and chocolate chip. She added it to the rest of the refreshments at the table and took a cup of hot chocolate for herself. “Aiden you got this you ran Starbase 12 as much care as anyone could, and did more than your share on the Vanguard.” she offered him a cup and one of her signature cheeky smiles.

Aiden turned as Emery entered the room, a smile tugging at his lips as the scent of freshly baked muffins wafted through the air. He couldn’t help but chuckle at the sight of the decadent treats, each one tempting him with its irresistible aroma.

“Ah, Emery, always thinking of our waistlines,” Aiden teased as she set the platter down on the table. “Though I must admit, I’ll make an exception for these.”

“With the workout routine of most crew I highly doubt this offering of muffins will go to anyone’s hips.” Emery retorted with a light laugh, and added cheekily, “If so I will be their workout partner until they’re happy.”

He accepted the cup of hot chocolate, enjoying the warmth it brought to his hands. As he took a sip, he couldn’t help but reflect on her words of encouragement.

“You’re right, Emery,” Aiden replied, his tone thoughtful. “Running a Starbase and serving as an XO were certainly valuable experiences, but being fully responsible for a starship, especially the Memorial, as its captain… It’s a different beast altogether. The weight of this command feels heavier somehow.”

He met Emery’s smile with a determined gaze, grateful for her unwavering support and confidence in him. With her by his side, he felt ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead, knowing that together, they could overcome anything.

Shortly the doors hissed open, admitting a dark-haired, athletically built female human with black hair pulled back into a tight bun. She wore two solid pips and the black and gold of Operations. Ocean blue eyes swept the center of the room, then the corners working near to far. They landed on Voss, scanning him spatially, then tactically. At the same time she noted the diminutive redhead next to him.

Her posture changed slightly, assessing them socially. Recognition flickered across her face. All within half a second. Her eyes landed on the table. A wave of annoyance that rolled off the career Security officer for anyone with enough telepathic or empathic ability to pick up. But that brief flicker was it. The woman didn’t just have a good poker face, but a poker brain. At least for now.

“Captain Voss,” she said, making her way over and offering a hand for a shake. She moved with the easy grace and lightness of foot of a career martial artist. “My apologies for not seeing you sooner. I understand something urgent has come up.” Her voice was silky and smooth.

Aiden recognised Lieutenant Beckett from the crew brief he received prior to taking command of the Memorial. Her reputation as a skilled and dedicated officer preceded her, and he was glad to see her in person, confirming his initial impressions.

“Lieutenant Beckett,” Aiden greeted warmly, He noted her easy grace and the confidence in her movements, a testament to her experience and training. “I’m glad you’re staying with the ship. With such a large change in senior staff, it’s always good to have someone familiar with the ins and outs of the Memorial.”

He appreciated her proactive approach and the readiness she displayed, a quality he valued in his officers. “No need to apologise,” Aiden reassured her with a smile. “We’ve all been caught up in the whirlwind of preparations. But yes, something urgent has indeed come up. I’ll fill you in on the details once everyone’s here.”

She offered the same hand to the decade younger Lieutenant Kindle. “Lieutenant Beckett,” she offered in greeting, her tone pleasant.

Lt. Beckett, Chief of Security

Aiden gave Emery the chance to introduce herself.

“Pleasure to meet you, Lieutenant Beckett, You’re welcome to call me Mir if that would make you more comfortable.” Her cheeky grin stayed in place as she shook the older woman’s hand firmly but not trying to prove anything handshake. Emery personally hated it when folks did that so she never did it herself unless they started it. She wasn’t offering her middle name yet. Time would tell if she would or not to the new folks.

As Asher entered the briefing room, he was greeted by the sight of Captain Voss and the two officers already engaged in conversation. Nodding in acknowledgment, he made his way over to join them, his mind already assessing the mood in the room and the dynamics at play.

“Captain Voss,” Asher greeted with a respectful nod, acknowledging the captain’s leadership. “Lieutenant Beckett. Lieutenant Kindle. It’s good to see everyone, thought not everyone is here just yet I see” He was here as the acting chief counsellor.

Lieutenant Asher Miller
Counselor
USS Memorial

“Counselor Miller, I will be late for my appointment today due to this.” Emery said with a cheeky grin as she gestured at the room with the PaDD’s at everyone’s seats the food the implied they’d be here a while and the fact that not everyone had arrived yet.

Matt came in slightly behind the new counselor. It seemed that all the departments were getting new people. He felt out of place at times. This wasn’t his first time as a head of the department. But, it was the first time aboard a ship.

Miz’uki was not far behind Matt Miz’uki was not like most Caitians She had a fascinating fur Pattern mostly brown but with Yellow Black White and Grey mixed in creating a unique swirl of color there was a Yellow spot on her forehead that looked like an Oval coin though again this was part of her fur pattern her uniform was also different She wore a very rare Skirt instead of the usual pants and she had no boots on as her Digitigrade legs did not really support the wearing of Boots instead she seemed to have armored Leggings that covered the tops and sides of her paws and all the way up to her knees she had 5 simple hoop earings three were in her right ear and two were in her left her eyes were an emerald green and of course featured that oh so familiar feline slit pupils she took a seat waiting for the briefing to get underway

KT arrived not long after everyone else “Captain, Ladies and Gentleman” she said in her usual warm and kind tone “I hope I’m not late. I had to finish up a surgery” she said as she surveyed the table. If she needed to eat KT would have bene very happy to see the spread. But she didn’t so she decided she’d just enjoy the colours. She figured it was going to be a long meeting. The perfect opportunity to get a read on all the new commers.

****Space left for any other entrances.

Aiden began the meeting by clearing his throat, “Thank you all for joining us. I understand the effort everyone is putting into preparing the ship for departure at the earliest, a situation that’s less than ideal. Nevertheless, we’ve received orders from Starfleet.” As he spoke, Aiden gradually moved towards the prominent display screen positioned at the table’s forefront. With a swift gesture, he activated it, revealing the unmistakable Starfleet emblem. Navigating to the next screen, he unveiled their current position with that of the Ferengi vessel.

“Starfleet has tasked us with responding to a distress signal in Sector 82. It’s a journey of a few days, during which we’ll rendezvous with our fighter wing currently engaged in training exercises along the way. Now, I’ll defer to our Chief Intelligence Officer to provide further insights into the Ferengi, their vessel, and the space we’re about to traverse.”

Matt heard that intel was involved. That was never a good sign. He had heard the stories of intel missions going wrong. He had heard from a friend of his about his brother. His mission went wrong. Left his daughter and brother for a few years.

“Firstly, the Divine Dividends, (OOC If I spelled that wrong I am sorry and I will correct later), is a Ferengi Marauder that’s a combination of a freighter and a warship. As the latter, it is nearly a match to a Federation Galaxy class.” Emery paused to give anyone who wasn’t familiar with that type of ship time to look over the details on their provided PaDD. (Annotations, The Marauder of the D’Kora class, Class specifications Length: 366m Crew complement: 450.)

“The space we’re going to be operating is near https://memory-beta.fandom.com/wiki/Zaran, where it appears the Ferengi were passing through on their way back from https://memory-beta.fandom.com/wiki/Kappa_Ophiuchi system if their course is to be believed, they were skirting the edge of the first federation border. Its unclear what has caused the distress signal or why they were in the Kappa Ophiuchi system.” Emery paused again to give folks time to read if they chose but they might just wait and read it over themselves later. (Kappa Ophiuchi, (or 27 Ophiuchi) is a star, a class K orange star located in the galaxy’s Alpha Quadrant, visible from Earth in the Ophiuchus constellation.)

“Our key tasks are to provide assistance and make sure to avoid any disagreements that would damage our treaty with the Ferengi. I like to hope everything is on the up and up but past experience leaves me in doubt.” she said with a wry grin. “As for my department. I can promise you this, I don’t have any “shadows” and I won’t have them. If they can’t work with our crew face to face I don’t want them here.” Emery stated without looking at any one person. She knew the stigma of working in Intelligence most were distrusted. Fairly so. She just keep personal secrets, nothing that would EVER affect the ship or it’s crew. Not if she had her say at any rate. Aiden knew of her views of such “shadows” and how more than not they were trouble in more way than what was the worth their skills in her opinion.
