Tyr had been on the Memorial for three days before he was assigned a timeslot with the ships Counselor. During his first years at the Academy, he’d been arrogantly dismissive of the services of a psychologist on a quasi-military ship. He’d been set straight by his older Brother during one of their semi-regular calls. Baldur scolded him rather severely and explained the importance of the mental health of Starfleet Officers, especially those who serve in a combat capacity. Since then he’d forced himself to be more openminded and had managed to mostly change his view although he didn’t have enough practical experience to know if it had worked.
Once he arrived he hit the chime and waited to be let in.

“Ensign Tyr Bragason, Ma’am” He said, he’d managed to mostly get rid of the nervousness of being on a new ship, his first real assignment, so he spoke in what was his usual confident almost cock-sure voice “I have an appointment,” He said simply.

A female voice hollered “Come on in” and the door whooshed open before him. What he would see wasn’t the usual cold, clinical room of a Counselor. The walls were not bare. A few odd weapons hung on the wall as well as various pictures. The themes tended towards travel and collections versus mere ‘eye candy’. And upon closer inspection, would find that the pictures were taken, not purchased. There was an intimacy in each scene, whether it was an ocean slamming against a column of rocks, or a small cafe area with shops around it.

Assessing a room was a force of habit by now, he presumed that he’d be able to stop doing so by rote but as soon as Tyr walked in he scanned the room, he made a mental note of the decorations although a mental note of what he wasn’t quite sure yet.

The bookshelves held not just items, but actual books. There were three, but they were worn and hard to read as far as titles go unless one actually picked them up to look at them. The woman, reaching up to water a hanging plant in front of the window, smiled over her shoulder as he walked in. “Welcome in, Ensign. Feel free to sit wherever you want.” She added with a laugh, “I promise it will be painless.”

The young man’s eyes lingered on the books, there hadn’t been any books where he grew up but he’d seen them as a child. He knew it wasn’t uncommon but still something noteworthy. Tyr returned the smile “Thank you ma’am”

The choice of seating may surprise him as well. There was a single chair angled in front of the bookshelf to make access to the books and PaDDs there easy. A couch sat before the window, a coffee table in front of it with room to walk around if one wanted to take in the view. There was a table with chairs near the small food dispenser and another large comfortable chair on the end of the coffee table close to the couch.

With a variety of choices, Tyr did the only thing he could, mental Eeny, meeny, miny, moe which led him to sit down on one end of the couch, cross his legs, and started to wait.

As he chose his seat, Kady moved to the sink and emptied the small container of water. She hated to be pushy and wanted to let the young man get settled before she moved in on him and made him feel uncomfortable. “So, welcome to the Memorial. How are you settling in?” She poured a pitcher of cold water and set it and a couple glasses on the coffee table. “Help yourself.” She poured herself a glass and left the pitcher for him if he chose.

Leaning back into the chair furthest from him, she smiled and took a sip of her water.

Tyr smiled easily as he helped himself to a glass of water and started by taking a small sip before putting the glass down “Don’t know if I’ve had enough time to settle as of yet but so far so good, always liked routine” He said in a mostly cheerful tone.

Kady smiled. “Well you will definitely get some routine here. At least, in your schedule, I am sure. As to what happens on your shift,” she laughed lightly, “we are in deep space. Things rarely follow routines out here. Though there is some comfort in the routines we use to make amends when things go awry.”

She gave him a heartbeat before asking. “So what brings you out here? Did you request the Memorial and deep space or was it merely an order you took?”

Tyr shook his head with a laugh “No ma’am I did not request this position specifically. My rather unusual schooling brought me here. I doubt I would have been assigned here directly from the Academy with just my security credentials, generally, they’d send the top graduates to a frontline deep-space battlecruiser. I may have been close but being close isn’t enough. Being a pilot as well as a security officer fills a niche that the Memorial is uniquely situated for.” He smiled as if at an amusing joke.
