After finishing his Medical Examination Tyr returned to his quarters, took a quick sonic shower, and put on a fresh uniform. He fussed with his hair for a few minutes then finally decided he needed another shave, his chin was already turning a darker shade with rapidly growing stubble. He grabbed the standard-issue razer and did a quick once over, careful not to cut too close. He checked himself over for a final time before attaching his combadge to his uniform and leaving his new quarters for the second time that day.Once he’d made his way to deck 11 he did a quick breathing exercise. He’d been overly stiff in Sickbay, he wasn’t sure however if that would be a positive or a negative when meeting his new Department head. He entered the security offices. The atmosphere here was the opposite of Sickbay, as soon as the door opened there were at least three sets of eyes on him before he had a chance to make his visual scan of the room. He hesitated only for a moment then stepped through the doors. He walked across the room, nodding to other officers, most of which had stopped paying him any attention. He finally stepped outside the Security Chiefs office and hit the chime, he had already been hesitant enough for today.
A couple of voices came from behind the door, muffled through the metal. They halted at the chime, then came the call to enter.
Once he heard the call to enter Tyr took a step into the office, clasped his hands behind his back, and stood at attention. He recalled advice his brother had given him Don’t shout, speak in a calm respectful tone, this isn’t a holoplay and you aren’t reporting to a flag officer. Firm but polite, show backbone and confidence but don’t be overly arrogant. And for the love of Cochrane don’t make them a ‘sir sandwich’ “Ensign Týr Bragason, reporting for duty..” He hesitated for a moment, Baldur had never explained what a ‘sir sandwich’ was. “Ma’am” He finished only a fraction of a second later.
Ensign Tyr - Sec
The interior of the office was large enough to be functional. One could almost land a shuttle on the desk, were it not piled with PaDDs and a few other odds and ends. The walls were mostly bare, few decorations. Spartan would have been a good way to describe it, save for the image of a beat up cargo hauler, but a painting rather than a photo across a nebula backdrop and starfield, with the words “Gone but never far away” glowing softly, splashed across the bottom.
A few other canvases and drawings were framed in the walls. One was a sketch of Outpost 42, looking almost like concept art. Another were portraits and busts of a number of other people. Someone familiar with her history on the Outpost would recognize the faces of Lieutenant Marina Jusaro, Fleet Captain McCormick, Ensign Cadhla O’Leary, Lieutenant Acel’ex. Another woman strikingly similar to her. And on it went.
The Chief in question sat behind the desk, but stood as Tyr entered. She only came up to his eye level, with raven’s wing black hair pulled into a tight bun, and piercing blue-gray eyes. Athletically built, and by what could be made out through the uniform, in great shape. “Ensign Bragason, welcome to the Memorial.” Her voice was smooth and velvety, but dark, and for the moment… businesslike.
Tyr simply inclined his head “Thank you, ma’am” His expression was properly professional. He’d already done the standard visual scan of the room and he hadn’t shown any signs of being surprised by the Bajoran
To her right stood another woman, slightly shorter by a few centimeters. Bajoran, and with short chestnut toned hair and slate gray eyes. She had a similar build though was more slight in some ways, but with powerful looking legs. Both wore red, but the Bajoran was wrapped in a leather jacket emblazoned with patches, including that of the Red Lions from the U.S.S. Olinski. Her arms were crossed just under her breasts, one hip cocked out to the side as she worked her jaw around a little, but said nothing just yet.
“Straighten up and fly right,” Beckett growled at her compatriot.
“Fine.” But she did straighten, standing at ease.“We were just talking about you, actually,” Beckett said, gesturing for him to come closer. “This is Lieutenant, junior grade Farren, Adama. I had a chance to look over your file a bit, so I wanted her here. There are some organizational challenges ‘board the Memorial. Farren has more experience with aerospace combat and ‘advanced flight’ so she’s the executive officer for our little wing. Captain wants me to maintain the hat of CAG though, so I’m running things on paper.”
Tyr gave the Bajoran a curt nod “Copy that” He said, mostly to fill the gap.
“We don’t expect to have a lot of fighter sorties, but we tend to operate in recon and support for away or ground units. In the meantime, those up for flight operations will be assigned to standard duty positions. We occasionally get folks from other sections, operations mostly. So that’s why the stipulation.”
“You come highly recommended out of the Academy and your flight record is .. a little wild. Do you have a career track in mind, or do you just like flying?” The question was less leading and more curiosity. It was one of the things she wished her own chief had asked when she’d made her first post. Acel’ex had been rather lax in a lot of ways. Good officer, and she’d had a lot of leeway. As a self-starter, she was always looking to show initiative, but sometimes she’d wished for a little more mentoring. Perhaps… he’d recognized she didn’t need it. But needs and wants were different animals.

Lt j.g. FarrenTyr blinked in surprise at the question, he’d been so busy focusing on not cringing at his apparently wild flight record, fighting the urge to defend his pilot’s honor. “Honestly, Until the Academy I hadn’t considered piloting to be one of my major skillsets, My Shuttlecraft basics instructor saw something, potential I guess” He said with a shrug, he didn’t mind showing off when the time was right but for his new boss the truth was all he needed “I took an extra year to catch up on flight studies” He explained knowing that he didn’t have to “I don’t have a specific career goal, not until I understand what being a Starfleet Officer is”

bump
Beckett nodded, the corners of her mouth pulling down just a little as she did, but with some measure of approval. “I can appreciate that. When I started with the Academy I didn’t really know where I was going either,” she admitted. “I just knew I didn’t want to be ‘home.’ Had some aptitudes and things i was interested in. and waited ot see what opportunities came up, and where I felt called. It’s served me pretty well.”
The redhead next to Beckett shook her head. “Not me. I always wanted to fly. A shuttle is alright. A starship is… I wanted to be an angry angel screaming through the void.” She broke into a wicked smile then sobered.
“Touche,” Maria murmured to her counterpart. “Alright. Do you have any questions, comments, concerns for either of us? We’ll get you squared away on the duty roster most ricky-tick.”
Lt Beckett, Many hats
Lt FarrenTyr suppressed a wide grin a the pilot’s comment, he only managed to cover it with a small smile “My only questions are regarding my duty shifts and what responsibilities I am expected to have. I was surprised to be assigned on a dual position, pilot and security” He meant it in the way that he thought he might get assigned as a potential shuttle pilot, not a fighter pilot.
Ensign Tyr, Sec
Beckett nodded. “For now, you’ll be pulling duty stations all over the ship to be familiar with all points. Standing guard and on patrol. We’ll be switching your post for being posted to flight operations. This may mean being assigned to helm on the bridge. But it’s not likely. Instead, you’ll be on available rotation for auxiliary craft flight operations. That might mean shuttle duty, but there are a number of certified shuttle pilots, including among the senior officers. However, we don’t have many certified in advanced flight and fighter weapon systems. So.. you’ll be down here on the flight line or if need be running CAP. Details will vary day to day. You may be on your own, you may be in pairs, or we may all be out and flying through the void.”
“We may also need you to rotate watches. If you’re not in an assigned duty station, you are expected to be on call and ready to scramble. This may be even during off duty hours. In your rack. Unlike the civilian world, we don’t get to just say ‘nah I don’t feel like it’ when duty calls.” She paused with as mall nod. “That being said, somebody will always be on alert status. Meaning, they’re down at the squad room, or on the flight line, ready to hop in the alert fighter or fighters the moment things look like we might be in for a fight. They’ll be going out first. But when the call comes, we’ll need the rest of our flyers to answer.” When. Not if.
“Anything further,” Beckett asked. One might think her tone businesslike. But in truth, it was her job to disseminate information and keep her team on track. Serving them and empowering them to do their duty to the best of their ability.
Lt Beckett, COS/CIO/CAG
Tyr had stayed still during his Department heads speech, it seemed to him that the ship was oddly understaffed, perhaps that was just the nature of some vessels, especially those that are potentially more likely to engage in combat, he didn’t have the practical experience yet to make that judgment. He’d see how things would go “Only one, Ma’am. Is there a schedule for simulation training for the fighters?” He asked. There were two modes of training he was familiar with, Holographic exercises that were much easier to do on Earth where one could access a holodeck with ease, and using simulations on the Fighters themselves, he expected the latter as he was sure that the Holodeck would only have a limited amount of time available for such training.
Ensign Tyr, Sec
She nodded. “Training sims get priority on the Memorial. As much as we might like blowing off steam, we’re a warship first. Which means we’re constantly drilling. Constantly training. Fighter crews get a good cross section for that too, plus hands-on.”
Adama spoke up as well. “Well have a schedule up. Any extra training you can file a request for and we should be able to carve out some time. Meantime you can also do some simming in your fighter if you put it in trainer mode or do some simming in your quarters. But holodeck really is the best.” She glanced over at Lt Beckett next to her who nodded.

Tyr nodded slowly “Copy that” He said, he seemed to have gained back some of the confidence he may have lacked in the beginning of the conversation “I have no further questions at this time” He said, or almost announced

Beckett nodded. “Alright then,” she said. Reaching over, she picked up a Padd, tapped a couple buttons on it, swiped. then passed it to Tyr. “Your billet. And for now, you’re assigned to operations and security for Deck Three.” It wasn’t an immediately glamorous assignment. It was, however, rather important, as there were critical systems there, and vital personnel. Transporters and Department Head quarters. ‘Meantime it wouldn’t hurt to familiarize yourself with the rest of the ship and crew. I suspect you’re gonna be here a while.” She straightened up. “Welcome to the U.S.S. Memorial. May we remember those that came before and gave their all.”
