“I’m telling you, the reading was correct, I triple checked it!” The young Ensign squeaked as she handed the padd over to Dr Ardel. He thoughtfully stroked his beard as he peered at her research with his usual scientific skepticism before sighing and handing it back to her. “I agree, it is marginally anomalous, but it’s still within the parameters,” he said gently, not wanting to quell her scientific curiosity.Ensign Cade sighed in return as she reluctantly took the padd back, looking a little crestfallen. Daniel smiled sympathetically as he gestured to the young ensign to take a seat opposite him. “Liris, you’re a gifted scientist and I know how much this project means to you but you have to understand that work like this can take a lifetime to produce results…I should know,” he added with a hint of melancholy as he instinctively ruffled his rapidly greying hair. “You’re doing amazing work here and you have been such an asset to the team, I just don’t want you to get ahead of yourself,” he added gently as there was a familiar chime at the door. Dr Ardel rose to his feet and gently put a hand on her shoulder. “Look, if you really think there is something to investigate here, let’s run the programme through Dr T’Vor’s analysis matrix again,” he replied as Ensign Cade grinned and nodded, heading for the door.
As the door slid open to reveal a welcome face, Ensign Cade let out a little giggle and quickened her pace out of the office. Watching her go, Jennifer chuckled as she stepped into the office and waited for the door to close. Daniel grinned back and embraced his wife before shaking his head at her enquiring look. “She thinks she’s made ‘contact’ again…” he said with another sigh as Jennifer gently tucked a lock of hair behind his ear making a mental note that he was in desperate need of a haircut. “Maybe she has this time?” Jennifer added as she grabbed a cup of coffee from the replicator and perched on the end of her husband’s desk. Daniel raised a sarcastic eyebrow. “Like the last 15 times she thought she had?” He asked in disbelief.

Ensign Cade practically skipped away from Dr Ardel’s office as she made her way towards her research station. She knew what people thought of her here, that she was young and naive. Fresh out of the academy, Liris had very little real world application of her theories but she had an overwhelming need to prove herself. As an Betazoid, her family had naturally expected her to go into a more people centred profession as many of her friends and family had done but she had never wanted to be anything but a scientist. Although still young, Liris had always had an aptitude for it and she just knew this time that she was right. ‘It heard me…I know it did…’ she thought to herself as she bounded down the corridor of the research station.
As she turned the corner on her approach to her station she sensed a presence hovering behind her. She gave an irritated sigh, assuming it was her colleague Samir. He was a lovely guy but very awkward and he obviously had a crush on Liris that although endearing at first had quickly become a distracting irritant to her. She spun on her heel to catch him unawares but was surprised to see no one there. “Sam?” She asked hesitantly, wondering if he had gone from minor annoyance to creepy stalker. Silence. Taking a nervous gulp, Liris, peered into the lab to see if he was waiting there for her but again it was empty. The hairs on the back of her neck bristled with anxiety as she pulled out her tricorder to scan for life signs. As she did so, she suddenly winced in pain and shock as a voice thundered in her head, causing her to stumble backwards into the doorway and land flat on her back as the tricorder clattered to the floor.
~Yes…I did hear you…~
Liris groggily reached for her tricorder as her head throbbed and she tried to make sense of what was going on. She looked at the somewhat blurred but unmistakable readings. “It can’t be…” she muttered before slipping into unconsciousness in a crumpled heap on the floor of the lab.
