The starboard bridge turbolift hissed open and a female human in her mid thirties stepped onto the quiet bridge. Luxurious dark hair was drawn back into a tight ponytail. Sharp blue eyes took in the space first tactically then socially. She moved with an easy grace virtually without sound. It wasn’t hard to imagine her as a ghost, drifting just above the decking. The woman wasn’t exactly tiny at 172 centimeters, or around five feet and eight inches tall with the build of someone who’d spent well over a decade in frequent vigorous physical training.

Making her way aft, she paused outside the Captain’s Ready Room. Pushing the call button she sent a silvery shivering chime through the office air inside. Stepping back, she waited until bidden to enter.

Lt Beckett, COS

There was a voice that called out from inside a clearly feminine voice. When the doors opened, an Andorian woman was sitting at the desk looking over a newly replicated ocarina, inspecting it making sure it came out right. She stood at 5’10” tall. There were a few white scars on the parts of her skin which were visible. Her silver hair was styled in a not very Starfleet proper punk rocker cut. Her face was hardened and careworn, like a woman who has seen quite a lot. But there was also a strength and determination behind her gaze, even with the prosthetic eyes. This was a woman who was not to be messed with.

Her eyes were an extreme shade of green and obviously cybernetic replacement eyes. There was also an Andorian bonding ring around her right antenna. She looked up from the ocarina. “May I help you, Lieutenant,” she asked.

Tralla

The door opened, seemingly of its own accord. Sitting at the ready-room desk was a female Andorian who looked like a bit of rough road. Weathered was perhaps a better description. Still young, younger than the Lieutenant herself. It wasn’t the years but the mileage. The lieutenant, in her mid-thirties, had plenty of rough times, but most didn’t show, especially in uniform.

“Captain,” she intoned in greeting. Making her way in, she presented the small, slim PADD with her transfer orders. “Lieutenant Maria Beckett reporting in, as ordered.” Her voice was velvety, relaxed and flowing, but her tone was business-like and straightforward. “If my orders are correct, I’ve been selected as your new Security Chief.” Whether it was the Captain’s selection, or from Starfleet Command, she didn’t know or ask in the time it took her to make it to the starbase. She gave an ever-so-slight nod of her head as she finished. “I’m perhaps a bit early, but it seemed best to get an early start and meet with you and Lieutenant Commander Robinson. Then familiarize myself with the senior staff, the ship, and the rest of the personnel. And of course, all the usual boarding procedures and regulations.”

The Captain offered her right hand for a handshake. Telltale mesh and fusion of flesh might alert the Lieutenant to the fact that the Captain at one time had been on the wrong end of a Borg assimilation tubule. The Captain also motioned to the chair in front of her desk, offering the Lieutenant a seat. On the wall behind the desk, there were all kinds of souvenirs hanging up. Models of ships, an Ushann Tor Ice Pick, a few other historical weapons, some engineering tools, and a small piece of Borg armor reinforcing the notion the captain had some kind of encounter with the cybernetic zombies. On the desk was a mess of PaDDs, a set of human Role Playing Dice, and a Holo Photograph showing the Captain with another Starfleet officer, a male and a small Andorian child. “Welcome, Lieutenant. Have you ever served on a Memorial-class or have you read up on the class,” she asked, getting right to business.

Tralla

Maria took the proffered hand in her own. Firm grip, fast shake, professional. Blue eyes darted down to note the remains of that assimilation, and just for the briefest of moments, a flicker of sadness and empathy passed over her face. Or was that flicker just imagined? “Thank you,” she said as she shifted to take a seat. Her hands absently slipped behind her thighs, smoothing out her duty uniform before fully settling on the chair. At the question of being posted to a Memorial-class before, she shook her head. “No, this is my first time aboard one. But I familiarized myself with what specifications I could find. They almost put me in mind of a cross between a Sovereign-class and an Intrepid-class with more of a focus on Escort work rather than Exploration or Science. Can still do those jobs of course, but the Memorial has more teeth.” She broke into a momentary smile at that. “I’m sure this one is pretty special in its own way though, yeah?”

Idly she crossed one thigh over the other, hands settling into her lap. Her foot bounced lightly, and though she seemed quite relaxed, for a seasoned captain and an Andorian as well, it wasn’t hard to see it was almost a pose. Not that she was pretending, but even so relaxed was still ready… and paying attention to more than just Tralla.

Lt Beckett

She smiled. “Why don’t you introduce yourself,” she said looking up. The photograph of her and what was obviously her family disappeared, replaced by a digital orb with mostly androgenious though slightly feminine looking eyes and an audio waveform display. “Hello. I am Maizie. I am the ship’s ENINTADI AI UNIT. It is nice to meet you Lieutenant Beckett.” The voice while for the most part was also androgenious it was also slightly feminine meaning this AI must be drifting towards a feminine personality.

The Chief raised one eyebrow with a faint smile. “Pleased to meet you, Mazie. I was wondering when I’d get to meet you. I knew the ENINTADI AI’s are standard for the Memorial, but haven’t met one yet. I look forward to partnering up with you.” MAJEL was one thing, and even holographic characters and crew were another. But a full-blown AI was new territory for her. A rogue AI was very scary. The attack on Mars twelve years prior, when she herself was in the Academy at the time, was still haunting the Federation today. The atmosphere still burned, and over ninety-two thousand lives were lost that day. Not to mention the terrible impact on the evacuation of Romulus. There’d been instances of other rogue AI’s in the past as well. But since then, there had been plenty of braking mechanisms put into place. But more than that… trust and respect was required. She’d already made that choice before setting foot aboard the vessel. Her vitals hardly flickered, and even then they only showed a positive rise.

“You will more than likely have more duties than a normal security chief. I need you to handle incoming Intelligence packets as well as the tactical station out on the bridge. Further, I am in talks with the Admiral and Starfleet Corps of Engineers about getting a half squadron of fighters brought on board. If I am successful I would like you to head up that squadron,” the captain said, smiling quite smugly.

Tralla

The smug look wasn’t a good indicator. Maria’s focus narrowed down like a laser onto the Andorian while becoming quite still. She focused on every tick, twitch, unconscious gesture, micro-expression then. “I figured, based on my background, you’d want someone to handle intelligence, and coordinate with Strategic Operations Command for the sector,” she agreed. The fighter squadron was new. She loved to fly, and was a good pilot. Getting certified and studying up both on Outpost 42 and over the years had been a good idea. Serving as squadron lead was new, not entirely expected. But she felt up to the task. “As for the squadron, it sounds good. As soon as we know how many fighters we’re getting, we can start looking into pilots.”

Wearing multiple hats didn’t seem to bother her, and despite the initial tension at Tralla’s smugness, she seemed to be relaxed once more. The way she spoke was team-oriented and collaborative, and even anticipatory. “I presume Security and Air Group will have holosuite or holodeck priority for training sims for the time being?” Granted, getting people in for training while on liberty or shore leave would be a trick and a half. But afterward, it would be much easier.
