The Zaldan smiled and continued to walk, refraining from his reports till he arrived at his quarters. Romance or Dating was a near foreign concept to the Zaldan, seeing it much the same as courtesy, a set of phony social behaviors designed to cover true feelings. This wasn’t strictly by human standards a ‘date’ but it was going to be nice to have some time with another person who understands the joy of blunt conversation. At 1850 Jordar arrived in the lounge and sat at a table adjacent to a rather grumpy looking Tellarite. Although how you tell if one is grumpy is beyond the writer.Jordar, Sec
Karina had been off duty, officially, almost an hour. She wouldn’t necessarily call this a date, not Cairn standards anyway. Dating wasn’t really necessary when in a matter of moments you knew if the relationship would work. There were never ‘bad breakups’ on Vair. Everything was known so no secrets, no what ifs, you knew. But she also didn’t want anyone to accuse her of using her position on ship to influence others friendship. So with that in mind she changed out of her uniform and into mocha colored slacks, a peach blouse and took her hair out of the bun. As tight as she had to keep it to stop it from falling, she was happy to appease the headache it caused. She headed towards the lounge.
The grumpy Tellarite looked over at Jodar, recognizing a Zaldan when he saw one, and huffed, or more like snorted and grunted at the same time, “You’re blocking my view. You’re all the same. Tall, wide and think the rest of us should accommodate your large stature.” Even by Tellarite standards this man was short.
Lt Cmdr Enger, XOJordar was clasping a glass of awabancha when he heard the gruff diminutive man and turned to listen. This was going to be entertaining to say the least. “Oh I’m blocking your view? Of what exactly? This table? I’m surprised you can even see over your own glass let alone the exterior windows of the ship.” Jordar quipped back before taking a sip and continuing, “I’m tall, wide, and do indeed think you should be accommodating. If it’s such a problem go scurry off to the windows so you can see more than the bulkheads.”

The Tellarite seemed to chew is cud for a moment. He was quite pleased with this turn of events. “I supposed with a great big hulking brute like you I’ll be running around repairing cracks in the bulkheads when you smack your head on one. Make more work for me. And in case you hadn’t noticed, you blocked MY view by your careless flopping. I suppose you don’t know how to sit decently having been raised under the ocean and flopping around like a fish out of water.”
Taking another sip Jordar rose and said “So this ship is as badly built as the one I flew in? Or is your repair work so shoddy that I’ll need to watch out for falling beams and deck plating?” He waved his hand around and started to make his way towards the windows and looked at each and then back at the man, “Too tall.... too tall.... too tall…” He said a few times before saying, “Do I need to get you a stool to even see out of these? I might be out of water but at least I can see more than the knees in front of me!”
Losov stood up a little straighter and gave Jodar a good once over. “No need for a stool. You look sturdy enough. I’ll climb on your back and use you like a hobbit uses a dwarf for a ride.” And then he started forward as if to make good on his threat.
The bartender, Blarney O’Irishman, watched with growing agitation. He knew the Tellarite, Losov, but the man he didn’t know. He of course also couldn’t tell the other man was Zaldan. He tapped his combadge. =^=Blarney to Enger. Ma’am we have a problem down here. Two of the crew are really getting into it. It hasn’t come to blows yet, but…well you asked to be informed first if it wasn’t a physical fight.=^=
Karina sighed, there went dinner. She picked up her pace and entered the lounge, and almost started laughing. She nodded to Blarney and then waved the rest of the crew back to their tables. One very short Tellarite and one very tall Zaldan, standing by the windows hurling insults and complaints at each other. She leaned against the bar, “It’s alright Blarney. It’s like a bad joke without a punch line: A Tellarite and a Zaldan walk into a bar. One complains and one hurls insults. And they both walk out happy.”
She walked over, the two men totally oblivious to her. “Having a good time gentlemen?” Her voice held authority, but was soft so as to not carry past the three of them. Losov glanced at her with a snippy reply on his tongue and quickly swallowed it. “Cmdr Enger! Yes ma’am, we were.” Losov came to quick attention and glanced around the room and noticed the attention they had gotten, grinning like a little boy.Jordar was equally grinning as he looked at the woman and connected the face with the name. So this Commander was the XO? Oh that complicated things. “Indeed Commnnder we were having a wonderful time.” Looking down at his new friend and clapped him on the shoulders before he said, “Shall we have drinks tomorrow and continue our rousing conversation?”
“I’m glad to hear it, gentlemen.” She nodded to Losov good naturedly. One of the few people she’d had a decent conversation with on board. They’d shared a few drinks and despite his rousing complaints his insights into some of the engineering projects was eye opening and top of his game.
Karina grinned and looked at Jodar, “Dinner? Or is he more your type?”
Lt Cmdr Enger, XOThis made Jordar laugh loudly before saying “I don’t know Commander, he’s got a wit about him that I rather enjoy.” The comment was true but in a friendly sort of way, he nodded to Losov before heading to his own table, leading the XO. “Managed to get here without bumping into anyone else I take it?”
Jordar, Sec
Karina shook her head, with a grin, “Up staged by a Tellarite. But if it had to happen at least it was Losov.” She followed him to the table and sat down across from him. “Oh yes, announcing ‘make a hole’ as I jog down the corridor because I’ve been called to break up a fight tends to make the way clear.” Blarney walked over to take Karina’s drink order. He returned a moment later with Wrestling of Dragon and Tiger tea for her and a refill for Jodar.
Lt Cmdr Enger, XONodding at the comment he smiled and said, “I suppose it was a pretty disappointing fight but it is rather nice to have a wonderfully honest conversation with someone. “Tell me about yourself Commander, besides the fact that you’re a Cairn and enjoy frank conversations that most would think of as belligerent”. Jordar sipped at his tea, having almost ordered what the XO had and was wondering if it was a favorite or something new for her.

Karina sipped at the tea, savoring the heat of the tea and the liquor. “This tea, it was something I discovered at the Academy, at one of those local bars that the cadets were not supposed to go to. I felt most at home there. The idea of privacy is very foreign for my people, and behind the glitter and bright lights of the Academy there was always that sense of…” she paused it was a difficult to put the idea to words. “I am sorry. I do not know how to put to words. But the people there were honest and spoke what they thought. There was no…deception.” She sipped the tea again, “And I am…the humans call it ‘black sheep?’ Yes, black sheep of the family. My family wanted me to study exosociology so I could work for peace. They were unhappy that I went into security and intelligence. And the name’s Karina.”
LT Cmdr Enger, XO“Good to know your name Karina. You followed what you saw as right for you and I like that.” He said with a smile as he set down his cup. “It wasn’t the Malted Cobbler Hideout was it?” Jordar said shooting in the dark. He had frequented that bar plenty in his youth at the academy and figured it was worth asking. “The black sheep often produces the finest wool.” He looked at the woman sitting across from him and admired her, something about the sparkle in her eyes before saying, “I’m the only child of my parents. I grew up on the Manzar Colony in Sector 441 and was the only Zaldan child who’s parents were strict about raising me in the traditional way of our people. You can guess that it didn’t make me many friends. I did have a following of outcasts and used those experiences when I joined Starfleet and moved into Security then Intel where I was posted to Orion where I infiltrated syndicate operations and such. I got promoted, transferred to the Farsight, then got demoted for ‘insubordination’ then transferred here.”
Jordar, Sec
Her eyes sparkled, “The Malted Cobbler Hideout…I miss it. Most of my favorite memories from Academy are from there. I take it you are familiar with Falun Kirr,” the lady Tellarite owner, “and her little piece of despair,” what she called the Hideout. Black Sheep often produce the finest wool. Karina had to think about it. Idioms always made her pause, this one however was fairly straight foreword and her responding smile was only delayed slightly. She sipped her drink while he talked and then shook her head, “Okay Jodar, if that’s all there is to you, I can read that in your file and I can have dinner elsewhere. Or tell me something real about yourself.” It was clear she wasn’t trying to flaunt her position, but that she felt there was no reason to waste either of their time if they were going to hide behind what either of them could read in the standard personnel reports that anyone would have access to.
