Faye’s ability to mentally work through a problem in seconds had annoyed every roommate she had ever had at the Academy. They had seen it as some sort of oneupmanship , but that couldn’t have been farther from the truth. “There are two basic ways to do so in an artificial environment. You can attempt to simulate a natural stream, including the rock bed and the ecology of the bank, or you can create an obviously artificial channel in a decorative way that funnels the water from its source to the destination. Both are perfectly valid, it just depends on what aesthetic you’re going for.”
For the moment she could pretend that this was just a normal everyday conversation between two people, though her mind was all too aware of who might still be outside the doors and the people she expected to come in soon. Again, what some would read as coldness towards her own actions, callousness even, was really just a protective measure to keep herself in the present. Pretha, whether she had fully realized it yet or not, had granted her something Faye rarely expected: mercy.

Pretha nodded her head. “So describe the aesthetically pleasing one you mentioned. How would you do it?” She smiled slightly and tapped the console before her to check the hallway monitor to see if the Captain had arrived yet before looking back at Faye for her reaction.

CRIT LdrThat was a good question actually. And it only took Faye a few moments- her mind hard at work- to figure it out. “A mix of the two. From the terraced hill and water fall, I’d build a very straight rill out of a metal, something like copper that will slowly turn green with age. It would hit the main path and go under it before turning into a natural stream on the other side, wending its way through the bed and creating little nook and quiet spaces for benches. We would then plant it up with flowering shrubs and greenery to create places where people could find quiet,” she said thoughtfully. She could see it in her mind and was already calculating what they would need to do to adjust the lower pond to allow for the rill.

Pretha smiled. They spent the next half hour chatting about the garden. Pretha sighed at a pause in the conversation. “I’m gonna tell your mom to come back tomorrow. The Captain can give her permission to see you when he’s ready.”
Getting up from her still, she opened the door. Glancing out to see the woman still there, she smiled. “You may as well ho back to your quarters for the night, Ma’am. You’ll have to get permission from the Captain to see the prisoner. And I’m guessing he’s busy right now.” She maintained almost Sunday politeness that never once smacked of sarcasm or insubordination. Her professionalism was stellar.

CRIT LdrShara has begun to unnerve the two security guards outside the brig after awhile, which of course she noticed. And even when Oberon reappeared and delivered her message, she maintained her stoicism. She was fine about coming back tomorrow because this wasn’t about her. This was about Faye and her worry that this would be ten times worse than anyone expected for reasons they did not fully comprehend. It was a disaster in the making and Faye chose it herself.
Gazing at Pretha, she nodded, but something in her features shifted. What could she say without breaking her daughter’s privacy (never mind that she was in the brig)? “That’s fine. I’ll come back. Just…” A deep inhale steadied her. “keep an eye on her,” she said softly, repeating her earlier warning. If anyone would even see it as that. As her caring.

Pretha nodded, her face going a bit softer on the edges. “I will ma’am. I promise.” The words were meant to be truly comforting rather than mere lip service of yeah, yeah, now go away. She met the Commander’s eyes for a moment longer, nodded once more then headed inside, letting the door shut behind her.
Stepping back to her desk in the middle of the room, though still facing Faye, she smiled. “She cares, you know.” She wouldn’t pry or even say more, unless Faye asked. She just had the feeling the Commander didn’t do that often. So she wanted to be sure the message was received. Though how Faye received it or reacted, was a completely different story.
