Faye glared at him. “You want to talk.... really? And people think I’m the socially difficult person.” It almost made her laugh. Just enough that the corners of her mouth tugged upwards for a brief moment.
“I’m here eating at, gods know what hour it is now, because my work is that important that sometimes I don’t get dinner till a little while before bed,” Faye remarked. It was as good as it was going to get for the moment. After all, what did he expect, them to suddenly switch off and be bff’s who braided each other’s hair and gossiped?

He shrugged, “Its got to be better than whatever it is we’re usually doing. I can’t sleep because of my work and you don’t sleep because of yours, it’s toe-mate-oh, toe-mart-oh” Luke ate another spoonful of the stew and was leased it still filled him with a homely warmth. “I don’t think you’re socially awkward, I think you just don’t think you like people.”

That made her actually laugh and it was, perhaps, an unexpected release of tension. “Oh, I can tell that you somehow haven’t been exposed to the rumour mill around here.” She picked up her spoon, and it was perhaps an indication that she wasn’t about to abandon her dinner just yet. “You might want to pay attention to that. Even in the craziest fiction there are threads of truth. Now, discerning the truth from the fiction is an entirely different matter.”
“If I listened to rumors alone Id be a rubbish Security officer.” He had another spoonful of soup, I don’t deal in fact, fiction or even half-truths Lieutenant, I deal in hard facts and that’s all, so you might have to enlighten me with what word on the grapevine is” Luke was pleased that the tension in the room had softened, not entirely but it was a start, Luke could relax and he could hold a civil conversation it was whether she wanted to was what the question was.
Faye leaned forward slightly, gazing at him with her piercing eyes. “But I’ll give you a hint. You’re right that I don’t tend to like people, but not all people. Just the ones that irritate me. The list is long sadly, but it is what it is.”

“From the words, the Captain spoke to me I must be somewhat of a VIP on that list. I hope me trying to present myself in a less… intrusive way” He shook his head with a laugh “Well intrusive is the wrong word really isn’t it with me imposing my presence on you as I have, perhaps let’s just call it an irritating way that we can perhaps even become reasonable work colleagues, friends even if it developed in such a way” Luke was truly offering the olive branch to her now, would she take it?

Calloway went back to her stew, which was now lukewarm, and listened while he talked. At the mention of friendship, she gave him something of a ‘really?’ look and took another bite. “Let’s just try the colleagues thing, first. Believe it or not, working with others is not an issue for me. I’m a scientist. I start out with the premise that I don’t know everything, and that means others might know more than me. So teamwork isn’t a problem. I can keep things professional if others do.”

Luke had to withhold laughing as she pulled a face at him, ok so maybe he was clutching at straws going as far as a friendship, “Colleagues first” He nodded as if making a mental note for their future. He spooned his stew before deciding he was full. “I’m glad we had this conversation Lieutenant. Do you mind if I called you something else? Lieutenant is so formal and I’m too old for formal all the time. It’s exhausting.” During his time in the war, rank didn’t matter past the amount of federations credits you were awarded. Most of the time you never survived long enough anyway, Luke was one of the lucky ones… or unluck depending on the way you looked at it.
