“Id consider it more akin to professional curiosity than stalking but whatever helps you sleep at night.” Luke spooned his stew and took a mouthful. “I can see why you come here so often, truly delightful.” He set the spoon down and looked to Faye. “I think we got of on the wrong foot when we first met, and I know I have been… Professionally invested in you since but there’s no reasons why we can’t be friends.” Luke spoke honestly, no hidden motives whether shed see it like that would be down to her deductive reasoning.

Faye folded her arms before her on the table and gave him an unimpressed look. But also, it was a tired one. “Presumptive, much?” She sighed. “Look, I get curiosity and I get that people who are told ‘don’t look at a thing’ then have even more reason to want to find out. But I am asking you as a fellow officer to back off. What you feel is curiosity could very well hurt people. There are reasons that situation is the way it is. And you know what? Us low rankers get absolutely no say in it, if we’re told we don’t get a say in it. That’s the deal we made when we joined Starfleet and donned these uniforms. We don’t have to like it some days, but we do have to abide by it.”

“That’s the words of someone who is close minded, I expected more. ” He sat back, Luke wasn’t your average starfleet officer before becoming enlisted he had spent years as a Marine and the lie people told themselves of ‘following orders’ was a false one if he had ever seen it. “I’ve seen what happens when people keep secrets, follow orders and do what people tell them too. For the majority it works, helps them sleep at night but for us” He pointed to himself, “were the ones who ask questions, organisations don’t need sheep they need people who are willing to ask the difficult questions and make the tough decisions, right now you’re an Anomoly and I don’t mean that in a condescending way, I honestly don’t but Starfleet do not keep secrets for any old reason.”
He sighed “Starfleet keeps secrets because A, they’re doing something they shouldn’t, B they’re doing something they don’t understand or C they’re not Starfleet at all. I don’t think you’re either of those, you know what you’re doing and the way you reacted when I spoke of that organisation we in the security department don’t mention showed me you weren’t them. Professionally you’re a mystery. So forgive me for paying extra attention to you Lieutenant, I don’t blame you for doing your job.”

Faye shook her head. “No, see the problem here is that you are tacking exception to you being kept in the dark. I can assure you that there are plenty of people who know all about this. What if, hypothetically, this is something you might be included in later, but for the time being it’s been decided by people farther up the chain of command that you don’t need to know. I need to know all the details because my work requires it. Yours does not. For the time being, my work doesn’t even involve your department. Curiosity or not, I can’t understand why you can’t leave this alone!” Uggh, not she was all irritated and this was supposed to be a quiet meal.
“You’re Niave” He said a little angrier than he had anticipated, his Intrions here were to make peace. But her ‘I’m better than you’ complex, be it through the fact she was privy to more information or her disregard for professional respect was driving him up the wall. “I have never understood why information is withheld, at any level. Imagine how mor efficient we’d be if information was passed along quicker unfiltered . Bureaucracy in its finest firm”
She chucked down her spoon with a clatter. “And you don’t know me at all. I’ve never been a ‘sheep’, and I certainly never will be,” she said with a bitter laugh. It was interesting that he hadn’t been privy to the extensive gossip mill of the ship. That or he was keeping those details close.

“You’re right I don’t know you, I hadn’t even come here to discuss work exactly.” He wasn’t sure how to continue, thier conversation had grown toxic. Luke wasn’t the kind of person to fight against the tide but her ability to rub him up the wrong way both enfuriated him and excited him.
“Can’t we just talk about something else? Perhaps I came off wrong, asked the wrong questions and gave the wrong impression. It’s late, and well, if we can’t discuss work let’s just… Talk. As much as I’d like to claim I planned this my… Mental state makes it hard to sleep. It was more of an educated guess you’d be here too” Maybe the Security officer was in over his head, maybe he was trying to drain blood from a stone but he never knew when to quit that’s what made him the perfect marine.
