Luke wanted to suggest something like not locking the door in the first place but knew it wouldn’t earn him any brownie points. “Pay isn’t what drives me, if the current Chief doesn’t mind turning a blind eye because the captain says so, if and when I become chief don’t expect me to also not want to, what you’re doing clearly has a direct impact on the ships safety, and that’s what I concern myself about. I’ve got my eye on you so to speak, nothing good ever comes from keeping secret especially when we’re all in the same boat” Lukes tone wasn’t aggressive, or invoking but it was cool, calm and collected. He meant every word.

Faye spread her hands in front of her outwards- the first time she had moved them from the door frame. “Look, Lieutenant. If I had any say in how this all worked, you would all know and I wouldn’t be here having to defend my territory for seemingly arbitrary reasons. But I have my orders. They are what they are and I can’t change them. Watch me all you want, but honestly, just let me do my job. It’s hard enough as it is.” Did she sound as bitter as she felt? Ah well, he could take it how he wished.

Studying her he let out a sigh. “And I am just trying to do mine Lieutenant, I’m not saying it to be difficult I’m saying it because it only takes the smallest unknown for something to go wrong, and right not your work is that unknown, can you tell me one thing?” Luke looked at the woman dead in the eye, “Could your work directly affect the safety of this ship and this crew?”

She snorted. “My work is all about protecting this ship and crew. Take that as you will.”

He smiled unsure if that’s the answer he wanted to hear. “Well, since it seems we’re at an impasse I suppose it would only make sense to part ways” He held out his hand, “It was good to meet you Lieutenant Faye Calloway, Data specialist, and all-around mysterious person.” He chuckled trying to show he wasn’t just this uptight security officer, he was far from it but he took his job very seriously and apparently, as did she.

Ugggh. False niceties. Even worse. Faye grudgingly shook his hand, but not for a moment longer than necessary.

A thought popping into the security officers’ head, “You’re not one of those Section 31 types are you?” He said quickly with a geekish wink.

Whereas as the greyed waters of a green sea were the usual colour of Faye’s eyes, in that moment it was as if dark cumulonimbus clouds had rolled in, darkening her expression at the same time. “Now you’re just being spiteful. You can go away now,” Calloway grumbled.

At his dismissal he shook his head and flashed her a smile, “Have a good day Lieutenant” He backed away and bowed his head before once more before looking into her steely gaze and then turning away to return to the bridge, perhaps this ship wasn’t going to be as boring as he figured.

With an irritated sigh, Faye stepped back and let the doors slid shut, once again locking. Moving back to her work, which was as sensitive as she had mentioned, she slumped into her chair. Not for the first time even this week did she curse this terrible bind she was in. But she had accepted the original terms and clearly didn’t get to have a say in how they played out. Let some of the crew doubt her, and gossip, and assume the worst. She was a big girl and had people who believed in her. It was enough, It had to be.

Upon his return to the bridge, a voice from the Center Chair said “And how’d your ‘meeting’ with Lieutenant Calloway go, Mr. Wyatt?” the Captain asked without looking at the Security officer. Was that a hint of humor in his voice?

The Security office looked to the Captain and smiled, he wondered how and why the CO knew but surmised that either she had informed him or there was some kinda of Security function which informed him during any attempted entrance that wasn’t autherised. “Oh” He acted surprised, “I think me and the Lieutenant are going to be great friends” He joked, “A real open woman, like a book” He added for good measure a hint of humour flashing in his eyes.

Cochrane looked at the man and said “Uh-huh. Do me a favor, Mr. Wyatt. Turn around for a moment, will you?” he asked with a concerned look on his face.

Cochrane, CO

Luke looked to the officer confused, “What, why?” he asked but doing as the commanding officer had ordered, his own concerned look mimicking the captains.

Cochrane looked and then went back to facing front. “Nope, still have your ass. I guess the Lieutenant is in a good mood today.” he replied, and the rest of the bridge crew let out a subdued but knowing chuckle as a group. Apparently more than one has been on the receiving end of overstepping their welcome with the Computer Specialist.

Cochrane, CO

Turning back around clearly amused by the joke. “well what can I say” he said mockingly shrugging and raising his arms up to his sides, “Must have been my winning personality.” Luke clearly had done well to have come back in one piece if the bridge Crews reaction was anything to go by, he then asked “Any suggestions on how to handle our next date?” Luke was clearly no concerned about his he looked when Faye Calloway was concerned. Humour was his defence and attack.
