“Nothing big and red and alarm-like,” Faye said nonchalantly as she tapped some keys.

“And you didn’t bring any champagne. Does that mean you were reserving judgement on my success?” she asked, him, casting an amused glance in his direction.

“Its coming with the sparklers and ‘congratulations it’s a functioning defense array’ banner.” he replied with a laugh. “Just had to make sure you are all you were cracked up to be, Lieutenant.”

Cochrane, CO

She nodded slowly. “Ahhh, I see. Not a gambling man. I can appreciate that,” Calloway said with a smirk.

Faye returned her attention to the screen and watched the code scroll. After a few moments she smiled and rolled her chair backwards, setting herself off in a slow spin. “It’s working,” she said quietly, as if she might be afraid it would jinx her progress. But there was a sense of wonder in her eyes and her tone that summed up much of how she was feeling. Much but not all.

Suddenly she was feeling a little emotional. Wasn’t this supposed to be the part where all her troubles, all the nonsense with her orders, was to be validated? She leaned back and laughed, mostly incredulously. How was it working? It was hard to explain how some nights (many nights) those horrific images from the fate of the Odyssey crept into her dreams and threatened to swallow her whole. It was one thing to promise a captain like Cochrane that it would never happen here, but it was much harder to counteract what seemed to be powerful forces at play. At least, for the moment it seemed, they would get a reprieve. Not that shouldn’t wouldn’t be diligently following everything that came and went and of course she had a million alarms rigged to alert her to the tiniest possible intrusion, but at least she could breathe. She might not be able to rest, but she could breathe.
