The faint hum of the Manhattan’s engines was the most prominant sign of life in the ship’s sickbay. The hour was late and even in deep space that held some meaning. Third shift was quiet at present, especially in sickbay where only Lieutenant Che’lak was on duty. Her movements were silent as she arranged items into their prescribed storage locations after the disruption the day had brought. After running some routine scans and treating a tedious couple of burns from an incident in engineering, there was only one outstanding scheduled appointment requiring her attention and it was rapidly approaching: Lieutenant Oberon was to arrive soon for her belated boarding physical. Having shared a shuttle with Oberon, she was the crew member the Vulcan was most familiar with and despite having doubts as to their social compatibility, she was keen to further develop any and all professional relationships. Taking a glance at the time displayed on a nearby terminal, she found the alloted time of the Lieutenant’s appointment only a minute removed. Prompted to take heed, she positioned herself in the centre of the room, stood taut with hands folded against the small of her back and facing the doors to the corridor, lying in wait.

Lt Oberon figured the more she got in before morning, the quicker she could be on duty. Being in orbit over an unknown world, at least to her, meant all hands on deck for Security at least.

Stepping into the medical bay for her late night check in, she was pleasantly surprised to see her shuttle mate standing in the middle of the room. Looking around a bit confused, she grinned. “You do realize you don’t have to be waiting on baited breath.” She nodded and smiled. “Well, I guess if we ae going to be official,” she inclined her head with respect. “Lieutenant Pretha Oberon, here for my onboarding physical.”

Che’lak returned an angular nod down to Pretha, her long chin poking at her chest. “Lieutenant”, her tone shifted to one of performative indignation, “Junior Grade… Che’lak. Not at all Lieutenant, there is nothing to clear the mind quite like a good stand in the evening.” The woman’s voice betrayed distant disinterest. “I thank you for your promptness; I intend to retire after this appointment. Please sit.” The doctor gestured to a nearby biobed. “Are there any new medical issues you with to disclose or discuss?” All the while the Vulcan’s eyes monitored Pretha as if to scan her, probing beneath her visible aspect.

Pretha inclined her head in respectful return. “Nice to meet you officially, Lieutenant.” She moved to the biobed and sat on it with little more than a hop to settle herself. “No, there is nothing.” She looked back at the woman with similar interest. Anyone coming in may think it a strange form of a staring contest. Both sizing the other up. Pretha knew when she was being weighed and measured. She was curious, on a personal level, if she would be found wanting, so to speak. Her own personal assessment was mostly curiosity. One thing being why this woman had remained awake just to see to Pretha’s check in that could have been done by any night shift personnel.

As they looked at one another, pretending not to, the security officer inquired. “Did you have a good trip and find everything all right once you got here?” It was idle small talk, but she needed to break the silence.
