Shara was quiet a moment and leaned forward slightly towards Cochrane’s desk. “I have leeway. My superior, whom you’ve already talked to, trusts me to handle this in a reasonable way. She understands the delicacy of the situation and that there are much bigger players here. regardless of what others bullish types in Intelligence might think, Faye is innocent first. It’s incumbent upon us to prove otherwise. Not the other way around.” She glanced at her daughter. “We have to investigate. I know you understand that. But you’re not in any danger here Faye. But we have to follow procedure here or else all of us in this room will be in a lot of trouble. The more transparent we are as we proceed, the better for everyone. So if there is anything you can think of that we all might need to know, now is the time to tell us. The less surprises we have within our little group here, the better.”

She wanted to be about anywhere on this ship right now than in this room and it was taking an exceptional amount of self-control not to lose her mind right here and now. Did Cochrane and Creed even realize that? Alex knew her better, knew how hard her struggle was much of the time. But the Manhattan was home, and if someone wanted to take her down, well she wasn’t going without an awfully big fight. And someone like Faye? They fought dirty. Rules got tossed out the airlock if needed. The thing about growing up a rebel was that self-preservation was her number one skill. And she was damned good at it.

A light tremor ran through Faye’s body as she quelled an anger she scarcely knew what to do with. “What do I know? Probably too much. That’s the problem, isn’t it?” Faye turned to Alex and took a couple of steps closer to the captain’s desk, her face etched with anguish. “Do you fully know what the Romulans did to me? Did you know they treated my brain like a… human hard drive and dumped info there? After I escaped and the implant that blocked the info was removed, without killing me I might add…” Faye shook her head. “I would get these flashes of info in my head. And they were painful too. It moved too quickly for me to really pick out any one thing, I learned to control it so the info dumps stopped happening, but I’ve never been able to intentionally recall it. What if… what if someone is trying to get access to that info. It could be the same people that are behind these false orders right?” She glanced between the captain and Creed. Was she crazy? Was she drawing conclusions that just couldn’t be proven?

“Now that’s what I call a lead and some reasonable doubt. Information… it was what got my parents killed… what got their technology stollen sold and abused… I know Aedan Teller of OMAP once told that people believe money is power, but as cavalier and dangerous as that man can be, he knows it’s the knowledge that rules the galaxy. The more you know, the more you control.” Ardashir said softly as he looked Faye over carefully.

“If someone wants what you have, making you fall into a situation to feel vulnerable as you obtain more knowledge… more information… that could be something easily abused. Whoever went after my parents, I have been tracking them for years and this seems up their ally… using someone to gain more data, bleed them dry of their use then finish them… they bounced around from gang, mob, mafia, homestyle bakery… you name it, and took what they needed. Now… I don’t know for certain, but this information does seem to have their fingerprint on this.”

Stepping away, Faye began to pace. The room felt awfully small and crowded all of a sudden and the tightness in her stomach was not getting any better. She needed to talk to Blue but there was just the tiniest seed of doubt planted in her mind and she wasn’t sure she could, or should. Now, everything seemed shady, untrustworthy. What the hell was she to do? If she was being manipulated, what was the line between safe and a threat? If someone was pulling strings then they had the ability to bring her down without revealing themselves. In essence, she was screwed.

Cochrane looked at her and said firmly but not judgementally “Lieutenant. Breathe and take a seat. We are here to find a way out of this quagmire, and that’s what we are going to do.” He then looked at the older Calloway and Creed and said. “Steps going forward. Line them out. Let’s get a plan to address this and move on it. Now. I’m not leaving Faye swinging in the breeze here.”

Every cell in her body wanted to resist the idea of sitting. Of pausing. Of doing nothing. He didn’t understand. None of them did. there were times when as hard as she tried, her mind and body went off and acted seemingly of their own accord. Drawing in a shaky breath, Faye at least tried to follow his instructions, because regardless if what was happening here, he was the captain. And someone she trusted.

While she didn’t sit just yet, Faye did move back to her chair, grabbing the top edge of the back tightly.

Shara watched her daughter out of the corner of her eye, though her attention was seemingly on Cochrane. “i think the first thing we need to do if see if Faye’s handler has been in fact compromised. Whether we let anyone else know that right away depends on the circumstances and who we think we can trust. If Faye has been getting her orders through her handler and that person is compromised, then that’s the obvious path we need to investigate first.”

“That means we will need details on this handler, we have to find a way to smoke out the truth and move on from there. What all do we have on them?” Jack asked, more for Faye but Shara was free to divulge details if she knew too.
